Early life<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Kovilage Anton Vijaya Kumaranatunga was born on 9 October 1945, at the government hospital in\u00a0Ragama<\/a>\u00a0to Roman Catholic parents<\/strong>.[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0His father was Kovilage Benjamin Kumaratunga, a village headmen and mother was Clara Beatrice Perera. The youngest of four siblings, Vijaya had two elder brothers: Sydney and Vivian and one elder sister: Rupa.[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0He received his primary education at Seeduwa Davisamara Maha Vidyalaya, secondary education at\u00a0St. Benedict\u2019s College, Kotahena<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0De Mazenod College, Kandana<\/a>.\u00a0During his school days, he excelled at singing, drama and oratory.<\/strong>[4]<\/sup><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Following his schooling, Kumaratunga joined the\u00a0Ceylon Police Force<\/a>\u00a0as a\u00a0Sub Inspector<\/a>, but left soon after.<\/span><\/p>\n

Film career<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

He first appears in a lead role as a university student named Bandu in the 1969 blockbuster\u00a0Hanthane Kathawa<\/a><\/em>\u00a0directed by\u00a0Sugathapala Senarath Yapa<\/a>. But according to local film historians, the first time he acted in front of a camera was in the film\u00a0Manamalayo<\/em>\u00a0three years ago. Although a Romeo and Juliet story was made in 1969, he was not the lead actor.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

In a career that spanned nearly two decades, he contributed to more than 120 films,\u00a0<\/strong>114 of which starred the protagonist. Some of his most popular films include\u00a0Ahas Gauwa<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(1974),\u00a0Eya Den Loku Lamayek<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(1975),\u00a0Ponmani<\/em>\u00a0(1977),\u00a0Bambaru Avith<\/em>\u00a0(1977),\u00a0Ganga Addara<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(1980),\u00a0Baddegama<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1980),\u00a0Paradige<\/em>\u00a0(1980),\u00a0Maha Gedara<\/em>\u00a0(1980),\u00a0Kedapathaka Chaya<\/em>\u00a0(1989), and\u00a0Kristhu Charithaya<\/em>\u00a0(1990). He acted in one English-language film,\u00a0<\/strong>The God King<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, and one\u00a0<\/strong>Tamil<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0film,\u00a0Nanguram<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0Meanwhile, the Vijaya-Malini era also came to the fore when he became the dream boy in the 1980s Sinhala cinema. According to the critic Gamini Weragama, Vijaya\u2019s performance in the film\u00a0Maruwa Samaga Wase<\/em>\u00a0is close to Toshiro Mifune\u2019s supernatural role in\u00a0Rashomon<\/em><\/a>.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

He also performed as a playback singer in several films; recorded more than 100 songs;[6]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0and produced two films,\u00a0Waradata Danduwam<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Samawa<\/em>\u00a0which was released after his death. From 1983 to 1988 (once after the assassination)\u00a0he was a consistently popular actor at six Sarasaviya Award Ceremonies. B<\/strong>ut he received the award for the Best Actor only for the role in\u00a0Kedapathaka Chaya<\/em>\u00a0at the OCIC and the Swarna Sankha Festival in 1989, but he was not fortunate enough to see it. After two years of demise, he won the Sarasaviya Award for Best Playback singer for his song \u2018Walakulak Gena Muwa Karumu Hiru\u2019 for\u00a0Saharawe Sihiniya<\/em>\u00a0and his song \u2018Sara Guwana Vida Neguna\u2019 for the\u00a0Dolos Mahe Pahana<\/em>. The only proof that he turned to singing as well as songwriting is the song \u2018Mulu Hadinma Oba Hata Adarei\u2019.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Political career<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

In 1974, Kumaratunga started his political career in the\u00a0<\/strong>Lanka Sama Samaja Party<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(LSSP). He later joined the\u00a0<\/strong>Sri Lanka Freedom Party<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(SLFP) and became its vice secretary<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1977, he ran unsuccessfully for the\u00a0Katana<\/a>\u00a0seat in\u00a0Parliament<\/a>.[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0Five years later, he was active in the 1982 presidential campaign of\u00a0Hector Kobbekaduwa<\/a>. After the election, he was accused of being a\u00a0Naxalite<\/a>\u00a0and jailed under the emergency regulations of President\u00a0J. R. Jayewardene<\/a>, but he was never charged.<\/span><\/p>\n

He ran as the SLFP candidate in a by-election in\u00a0Mahara<\/a>\u00a0in 1983 and was threatened by\u00a0United National Party<\/a>\u00a0(UNP) supporters. An attempt was made on his life, and one of his friends was killed. Kumaratunga won the first vote count, and a recount was ordered. At that point, a blackout occurred at the counting centre. By the time electricity was restored, the UNP candidate had recorded a victory by a few votes. The opposition alleged that someone had \u201ceaten some of Vijaya\u2019s votes to ensure UNP victory\u201d.[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

On 22 January 1984 he founded the\u00a0<\/strong>Sri Lanka Mahajana Party<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(SLMP) and became its first national organizer<\/strong>, which campaigned for peace in the\u00a0Sri Lankan Civil War<\/a>. Under his new party, he contested a\u00a0Minneriya<\/a>\u00a0by-election and finished second, behind the UNP candidate\u2014relegating his old party, SLFP, to third place.[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0The SLMP went on to contest several other by-elections, including in\u00a0Kundasale<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Habaraduwa<\/a>, but did not live up to expectations.[9]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

in 1986, Kumaranatunga visited\u00a0<\/strong>Jaffna<\/strong><\/a>, then controlled by the\u00a0<\/strong>Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(LTTE). He visited the\u00a0<\/strong>Nallur Murugan Temple<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and met with local\u00a0<\/strong>Tamil<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0civilians, as well as several LTTE youth leaders.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In his final public address, to a large crowd in\u00a0Colombo<\/a>\u2018s Campbell Park on 28 January 1988, Kumaratunga lashed out at the UNP, SLFP, and\u00a0Janatha Vimuthki Peramuna<\/a>\u00a0(JVP) parties for failing to address the needs of the hour. He also voiced concerns about the SLFP\u2019s links with the JVP, a\u00a0Marxist\u2013Leninist<\/a>\u00a0party involved in two armed uprisings against the Sri Lankan government.[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

In 1988, the SLMP reached an agreement with several other left-wing parties\u2014including the LSSP,\u00a0Nava Sama Samaja Party<\/a>\u00a0(NSSP),\u00a0Sri Lanka Communist Party<\/a>, and\u00a0Eelam People\u2019s Revolutionary Liberation Front<\/a>\u00a0(EPRLF)\u2014to form the\u00a0<\/strong>United Socialist Alliance<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(USA<\/strong>). A few days prior to the establishment of the new alliance, Kumaranatunga was assassinated. The agreement was signed by party leaders at his funeral.<\/span><\/p>\n

The USA won a large number of seats in the newly formed provincial councils in an election boycotted by the main opposition SLFP. However, in the\u00a01988 presidential election<\/a>, the USA candidate,\u00a0Ossie Abeygunasekera<\/a>, finished in last place. In the 1989 parliamentary elections, USA candidates won three seats, but none of the winners represented the SLMP.[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Personal life<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

On 20 February 1978, Kumaratunga married\u00a0<\/strong>Chandrika Bandaranaike<\/strong><\/a>, with whom he had two children. B<\/strong>andaranaike was the daughter of two former prime ministers,\u00a0S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Sirimavo Bandaranaike<\/a>, and would later become president of Sri Lanka. He is adored as an honest politician, talented actor and singer and more importantly as a very good human.<\/span><\/p>\n

Death and funeral<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Kumaratunga was shot in the head with a\u00a0Type 56 assault rifle<\/a>\u00a0outside his home on the outskirts of\u00a0Colombo<\/a>\u00a0on 16 February 1988\u00a0by Lionel Ranasinghe,<\/strong>\u00a0alias Gamini.\u00a0Ranasinghe confessed to the murder under questioning by the\u00a0Criminal Investigation Department<\/a>. In a 141-page statement, he said he had been carrying out orders given to him by the\u00a0Deshapremi\u00a0 Janatha Viyaparaya<\/a>\u00a0(Patriotic People\u2019s Movement), the military arm of the JVP, which was responsible for multiple assassinations in the late 1980s.[12]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>After\u00a0Chandrika Kumaratunga<\/a>\u00a0became President in 1994, she appointed a\u00a0Presidential Commission of Inquiry<\/a>\u00a0which inquired into the assassination, its report alleged that President\u00a0Ranasinghe Premadasa<\/a>\u00a0of the UNP and two government ministers were behind the Kumaranatunga assassination without any direct evidence.[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Kumaratunga\u2019s funeral, on 21 February 1988, attracted huge crowds and was the first funeral to be broadcast live on Sri Lankan television (by the\u00a0Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation<\/a>). It was held at Independence Square in Colombo as a\u00a0state funeral<\/a>, even though he represented the opposition to the UNP government. The day of his assassination is widely known as \u201cThe Horrible Tuesday\u201d or \u201cThe Darkest Tuesday in Sri Lankan History\u201d (He was assassinated on a Tuesday).[<\/sup>citation needed<\/sup><\/em><\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0His death is still mourned by many people in Sri Lanka.[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
