Fazli Sameer, \u2026\u00a0<\/strong>The Compass Caf\u00e9<\/a>\u00a0\u2026\u2026\u00a0If you donno where you\u2019re going, then, any map will do<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It was the sort of caf\u00e9 people stumbled into without planning. A little crooked building on a side street that never seemed to appear on Google Maps. The hand-painted sign above the door read: \u201cThe Compass Caf\u00e9, Directions Served Daily.\u201d Situated in the heart of Kollupitiya, on Green Path, the ambience was amazing and many young people made it a regular place to hang out in the evenings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"elanka\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Inside, the air smelled of strong coffee and cardamom buns. A jumble of maps covered the walls: ancient parchment, subway diagrams, star charts, even children\u2019s doodles of treasure islands. Every table had a globe, most of them cracked and faded.<\/span><\/p>\n

At a corner table sat Jeronis, a young man with restless eyes, flipping through a road atlas as though it were a holy text. Across from him sat Mara, his older sister, her suitcase tucked under the chair.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve been staring at that thing for half an hour,\u201d Mara said, sipping her tea. \u201cDo you even know where you want to go?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeronis shook his head. \u201cNot exactly. But somewhere. Anywhere. I just don\u2019t want to stay stuck where I am.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not the same as having a direction,\u201d Mara replied.<\/span><\/p>\n

At that moment, the caf\u00e9 owner shuffled over. An elderly man in suspenders, his name tag simply reading \u2018Navigator Singho.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTrouble choosing a map?\u201d the Navigator asked, peering at Jeronis\u2019s atlas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI guess so,\u201d Jeronis admitted. \u201cI just feel like if I find the right map, the rest will fall into place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The old man chuckled. \u201cSon, if you don\u2019t know where you\u2019re going, any map will do. The question isn\u2019t which road, but why you\u2019re walking it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeronis frowned. \u201cThat sounds more like old wives tale wisdom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe,\u201d the Navigator shrugged. \u201cBut wisdom\u2019s cheap. Experience costs more. Care for a story?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mara smiled knowingly. \u201cGo on, Jeronis. You always did like stories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Navigator Singho leaned on their table.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOnce upon a time, three travelers met at a crossroads. Each carried a rolled-up map.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first traveler said, \u2018I\u2019m heading to the mountains to find peace.\u2019 His map showed winding trails up jagged peaks.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second said, \u2018I\u2019m bound for the sea to find fortune.\u2019 Her map led to harbors and shipping lanes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The third shrugged, \u2018I don\u2019t know where I\u2019m going. But I\u2019ve got a map, so I\u2019ll be fine.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

They all set off with great hope and anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mountain-seeker reached the peaks but discovered the thin air and cold silence weren\u2019t the peace he\u2019d imagined. The sea-seeker found ships and gold, but also storms and pirates, more fortune than she could carry, more fear than she could bear.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the third? He wandered in circles, forever changing maps, never realizing he was lost, because he never asked what he truly sought.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Navigator Singho leaned closer. \u201cNow, tell me, kolla, are you the third traveler?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeronis bristled. \u201cI\u2019m not wandering in circles. I\u2019m just\u2026 waiting for something to click.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mara set down her cup. \u201cJeronis, you\u2019ve been waiting for years. Remember when you wanted to be a musician? Then a teacher? Then a photographer? Each time, you bought the tools, studied the maps, but the moment the road got hard, you dropped it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeronis\u2019s voice rose. \u201cEasy for you to say, you had a plan. Law school, internships, everything lined up. Not all of us know from childhood what we\u2019re meant to do!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mara softened her tone. \u201cI didn\u2019t know. I just chose something and kept walking. That\u2019s the difference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeronis slumped. \u201cBut what if I choose wrong?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Navigator tapped the table. \u201cChoosing nothing is the only wrong choice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At the next table, a young woman, with a dusty backpack leaned over.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSorry to eavesdrop,\u201d she said with a grin. \u201cBut I think I get what you\u2019re going through.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeronis blinked. \u201cDo I know you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNope. Name\u2019s Kumari. I\u2019ve been traveling two years. Europe, Asia, Pacific islands you wouldn\u2019t find on these maps.\u201d She gestured at the walls. \u201cAt first I thought I was searching for something, a calling, maybe. But then I realized it\u2019s not about the map at all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s it about, then?\u201d Jeronis asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

She shrugged. \u201cIt\u2019s about movement. About testing paths until one of them feels like home. You can\u2019t figure it out sitting still, waiting for clarity. You\u2019ve got to walk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mara raised an eyebrow. \u201cAnd what if none of the paths feel like home?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lina smiled. \u201cThen you keep walking. Even the wrong road teaches you where you don\u2019t belong. Every misstep is still a step forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeronis stared at his atlas. His fingers traced a line across the faded paper, though he wasn\u2019t sure why.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been afraid of making a mistake,\u201d he said softly. \u201cAfraid of wasting years on the wrong choice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Navigator Singho placed a gnarled hand on the globe at their table. \u201cThere are no wasted years. Only lessons written on roads. Tell me, if you could start anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeronis hesitated. Then he whispered, \u201cSouth. Toward the coast. Galle, Matara, Hambantota, and even Tissamaharama. I\u2019ve always wanted to be close to the ocean, to feel that horizon, the amazing sunsets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mara smiled faintly. \u201cFinally, an answer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lina grinned. \u201cThen go. Buy the wrong shoes, take the wrong bus, sleep in the wrong town. But move. And soon enough, you\u2019ll know whether the sea is your peace or just another teacher.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeronis closed the atlas. \u201cOkay,\u201d he said. \u201cSouth it is. I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ll find what I\u2019m looking for, but I won\u2019t find it sitting here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Navigator Singho chuckled. \u201cExactly. Maps are tools, not destinies. The road will write its own chart as you walk it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mara stood, picking up her suitcase. \u201cI\u2019ll walk you to the Kollupitiya station. Who knows? Maybe I\u2019ll come visit once you\u2019ve found your horizon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As they left, Lina called after him, \u201cRemember, if you don\u2019t know where you\u2019re going, any map will do. But once your heart whispers a direction, even a torn scrap of paper will guide you through.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeronis stepped out into the sunlit street. For the first time in years, he didn\u2019t feel lost. He felt like a traveler.<\/span><\/p>\n
