He has made a massive impact in his own unstated way and is enjoying his stint in this beautiful Arabian Gulf country, where thousands of Lankans have played cricket and worked for decades. One advantage is that the Omanis they play against UAE teams regularly and have similar conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sundaytimes.lk\/181209\/sports\/mendis-special-potent-even-in-oman-323844.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32754 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sundaytimes.lk\/181209\/uploads\/IMG-0663.jpg\" alt=\"dulip-mendis\" width=\"595\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Image Source :\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sundaytimes.lk\/181209\/sports\/mendis-special-potent-even-in-oman-323844.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sundaytimes.lk<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Oman are in Group A and begin their campaign on September 12 against Pakistan before facing UAE on September 15 and India on September 19.<\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In an interview a few years ago with respected cricket writer Saadi Thawfeeq in the\u00a0<i>Lankan Financial Times<\/i>, Mendis spoke glowingly of Oman\u2019s new cricket facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cWhen I came to Oman they did not have any cricket grounds, the first green ground came after my arrival and then the second one,\u201d Mendis said. \u201cWe started building one by one, now we have two grounds in the same place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Speaking about the floodlit Oman Cricket Academy grounds, Mendis said: \u201cThis place was earlier like a brown desert.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">&#8220;But today it is one of the most beautiful places to play cricket with mountains surrounding the two grounds in the middle and with the academy building where we have our offices, practice nets with seven strips \u2013 two for spin, three normal and two for pace, fully air-conditioned indoor nets, gym, restaurant and board room. We have upgraded the lights from 1200 lux to 2600 lux, new stands and electronic scoreboard.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><b>Football Is the Main Sport<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cFootball is the culture here but gradually they are beginning to understand what cricket is and getting interested. It is like pre-1996 in Sri Lanka, we were struggling without finances in the Cricket Board, but then after we won the World Cup everything started pouring in,\u201d said Mendis, who played a key role in that historic title as manager and chief selector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The eight-team tournament has two groups of four teams. India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman are in Group A while Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Hong Kong are in Group B.
