We travelled back, remembering the Colombo Music Scene of the 60\u2019s and the artists, and promoters responsible for bringing great entertainment to Colombo and the suburbs, at a time devoid of Television in Sri Lanka, where the only entertainment available were live shows, events or the radio<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Stanley of course never stopped singing. Colombo audiences will recollect the renditions of \u201cLittle Eyes I love you\u201d and \u201cCha Boom\u201d delivered at their many appearances. Even though the Four Chords disbanded <strong>Victor Gamalathge<\/strong> continued performing duets with his wife as \u201c<strong>Christine and Victor<\/strong>\u201d and subsequently emigrating to Australia. Stanley immigrated to Toronto, Canada and continued singing in his church choir and for a little while sang with my brother Steve, myself and friends, starting off the <strong>Monks \u201cR \u201cUs<\/strong> singing group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The early sixties to my memory had an array of bandsmen, singing groups, singers and musicians who entertained us in Colombo and its outskirts. <strong>Ishan Bahar<\/strong> has recently compiled \u201cA Heritage of Song\u201d with contributions from many artists of that era and more.\u00a0 Ishan propelled to popularity with the <strong>Jetliners<\/strong> and was an instant hit from his first appearance with the Jets at St.Peter\u2019s College hall in 1962\u2019s \u201cShowboat\u201d. \u00a0The original four of the Jetliners were <strong>Lucien, Felix, Anton and Harris<\/strong>. The Jetliners went on to become Sri Lanka\u2019s first super group under the wing of <strong>Tony Fernando<\/strong> as their manager. Tony added more talent to the Jets with <strong>Mignonne Rutnam<\/strong>, <strong>Loretta Koch, <\/strong>and Mignonne\u2019s own sister \u2013 late <strong>Antoinette<\/strong>, as well as an array of male vocalists and musicians. More super beat groups would follow in the Colombo music scene. To name the forerunners there was <strong>Marci Perera\u2019s \u201cSpitfires\u201d<\/strong> from Colombo north and <strong>Earl Arnolda\u2019s \u201cThe Fireflies\u201d<\/strong>, all heavily booked for the sundown dances in the Colombo nightspots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Mascarilla, Coconut Grove, Little Hut, Rainbow room, Spotted Deer, Blue Leopard, Akase Kade, Flame Room<\/strong>, were some of the popular venues that featured sundown dances. One remembers and pays tribute to the DJ, announcers, comperes who helped foster the music scene of that era. There <strong>was Chris Greet, the Coreas, Vernon and Vijay, Steve Alagaratnam, Clive Rodrigo, Mallory Walles, Derrick Maloney, Bob Harvey, Barry Wittington (nicknamed Witty Barrington)<\/strong> appearing live on stage. Household names such as <strong>Jimmy Barucha, Shirley Perera, Livy Wijemanne, Leon Belleth, Nihal Barethi<\/strong> on Radio also promoted songs of the artists of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">In the early Sixties, veteran singer <strong>Des Kelly<\/strong> with <strong>The Semitones<\/strong> were already much sought after, and Des was one of the pioneering artists migrating to Australia. Among his many hits, \u201cDream World\u201d and \u201cCha Cha Baby\u201d had the number one spot on the local hit parade, and enjoyed regular airing on Radio Ceylon\u2019s commercial waves. <strong>Cliff Foenander<\/strong> did not perform much in Colombo, but together with <strong>Bill Forbes<\/strong> are two famous Ceylonese artists who made good outside of our Island. Bill an old Peterite appeared on the British talent show \u201cOh Boy\u201d, and made such hits as \u201cGod\u2019s Little Acre\u201d, \u201cToo Young\u201d which topped the British charts and local hit parade. Bill recorded many more popular songs, including \u201cOh! To be in England\u201d and \u201cAchcha England\u201d recorded under his other pseudonym of <strong>Kal Khan<\/strong>. Cliff gained international fame singing with <strong>\u201cThe Fabulous Echoes\u201d<\/strong> in the Las Vegas circuit. His rendition of \u201cLittle bit of soap\u201d topped the local hit parade. Cliff together with the \u201cEchoes\u201d toured the Far East and went on to Vegas, even appearing on the <strong>Ed Sullivan<\/strong> show. Cliff succumbed to health problems and passed away in 2000.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Others of Lankan heritage who gained international recognition are <strong>Keith Podger<\/strong> with the <strong>Seekers<\/strong>, jazz vocalist and actress, <strong>Yolande Bhavan<\/strong> of <strong>Lambert, Hendriks, Bhavan<\/strong> fame and <strong>Kamahl<\/strong> who migrated to Australia from Malaysia and is still heard over the airwaves, and continues to be active in the music scene Down Under.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">One of the early promoters of these shows was, <strong>Donovan Andree<\/strong>, who had many performers booked at <strong>\u201cThe Orchid Room\u201d.<\/strong> Donovan\u2019s showmanship brought down \u201cHoliday on Ice\u201d, The Big Circus and The Fantastic Fillipinos among many others to Colombo audiences. It is interesting to note, that of the last troupe, <strong>Frankie Ferrer<\/strong> (Juggler) partnered with <strong>Rosemary Ferdinands (sister of Bandsman Adrian)<\/strong>, continuing onwards to Las Vegas. Eileen Martin, The Mambo Queen settled down in Colombo and together with Tony Fernando helped run <strong>\u201cTony\u2019s Record Bar\u201d<\/strong> at the top of Bullers Road. Donovan\u2019s sons and family <strong>Elmo, Malcolm, Eryn de Selfa- Ramona Carr<\/strong> continued his legacy after his demise into the 60\u2019s. Lots of artists credit their step into the pop world to Malcolm Andree who was the entertainment manager at the Stadium. The Stadium, at Station Road, Bambalapitiya featured such names as <strong>Jimmy Weerasinghe (Red sails)<\/strong> and Platters repetoire, <strong>Loretta Olhmus<\/strong>, \u201cAn Evening in Roma\u201d, <strong>Doreen Stewart<\/strong> \u201cSecret Love\u201d, <strong>Larraine Hoffman<\/strong>. <strong>The Jay Bros<\/strong>&#8211; late <strong>Perin and his brother Dr.Geri Jayesekera<\/strong> (now retired in Colombo) with their hit record \u201cCherry Blossom Tree\u201d and other popular duets of the day. Even your\u2019s truly performed as <strong>\u201cSteve &amp; James\u201d-<\/strong> singing the hit of that time \u201cMassachusets\u201d.\u00a0 Malcolm whenever spotting one of us on Galle Road Bamabalpitiya, would always jovially hum the tune.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Of special mention, the very talented <strong>Menezes Family Combo<\/strong> with \u201c<strong>Papa Menezes<\/strong> on Sax at the helm, supported by his kids, <strong>Mickey<\/strong> on piano, with <strong>Tom<\/strong> and daughter <strong>Helen<\/strong> were popularly booked for weddings and special occasions. Helen continued performing as the <strong>Helen Lucas<\/strong> combo. <strong>Ralph<\/strong> entered medical college and formed a beat group, <strong>\u201cThe Heartbeats\u201d<\/strong> comprising undergrad contemporaries. <strong>Roger Menezes<\/strong> a grandson and talented musician played with the Jets and Spitfires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Other families of musicians included the <strong>Manickavasagar brothers<\/strong>, the <strong>Hofmann siblings<\/strong>, and the <strong>Pompeus<\/strong> family. <strong>Mifwany Lewis<\/strong> and son <strong>Joey <\/strong>doing their inimitable renditions of popular jazz and pop were often featured on Radio and in the nightclub scene.<strong> Desmond, Frank, <\/strong>and<strong> Eden Pompeus, <\/strong>well known as a trumpeter together with the late <strong>Malcolm de Zylwa,<\/strong> <strong>Dallas Achilles<\/strong>, <strong>Edgar Haber<\/strong> appeared with many bands at popular night spots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">A popular singing group of that time, The <strong>Italiares<\/strong> comprised reputed singers in their own right. There were <strong>Reggie Perumal, Bede deZylwa, Basil Joseph and Rajah Christopher<\/strong> all singing with the <strong>Choral Society <\/strong>and the Italiares, rendering Neapolitan airs and popular four part ballads. One of their signature tunes was \u201cGranada\u201d sung with typical classical gusto, that would have given quite a run to the current recording artists such as \u201cEl Divo\u201d. Each one was a sought after musician in his own right. Bede\u2019s solos at St.Mary\u2019s Church, Bambalapitiya were in demand for all weddings solemnized there. Likewise Reggie was the resident tenor at St.Lucia\u2019s Cathedral. Rajah\u2019s bass was always heard at St.Philip Neri in Fort. Basil was a violinist in the symphony orchestra of Colombo, and took semi lead roles in many a musical at the Lionel Wendt theatre. Basil continues to play and sing, now domiciled in California. The Italiares were backed by the <strong>Joy Ferdinando<\/strong> quintet. Joy\u2019s daughters, <strong>\u201cThe Ferdinando sisters\u201d<\/strong> were as well, regular performers at concerts especially at Good Shepherd Convent, their alma mater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Kotahena and Colombo North gave us the <strong>Gerry Crake Combo<\/strong> and his daughter vocalist <strong>Heather<\/strong>, and <strong>Peter Prins<\/strong> <strong>Combo<\/strong>. Another singing duo of the era was <strong>\u201cDenzil and Bosco\u201d<\/strong>, both Benedictines, singing the same repertoire as the Jay Bros. Denzil and Bosco being products of their Kotahena Alma Mater were featured performers at many concerts in Colombo North. Bosco\u2019s niece <strong>Shyami Fonseka<\/strong> and later the Fonseka sisters were coming into the scene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">As a promoter one cannot forget <strong>Mubarak Thaha<\/strong> as well who brought down a lot of international performers. <strong>The \u201cContinental Follies<\/strong>\u201d performed at the Tropicana and concurrently Thaha ran a talent contest in which <strong>Steve, Brian Fernando and I sang as \u201cThe Nightinghales\u201d-<\/strong> singing standard pop harmonies. The contest was won by <strong>Kumar Molligoda<\/strong> with <strong>\u201cThe Flamingoes\u201d.<\/strong> Kumar\u2019s rendition of \u201cOne night with you\u201d clinched the win. The Nightinghales were runners up. Thaha had an entertainment club <strong>\u201cThe Atlanta\u201d,<\/strong> in Colpetty. It was here that the Cuban dance sensation <strong>Arsenio Alexander<\/strong> and his wife performed nightly. \u00a0Arsenio stayed on and co-produced <strong>\u201cManame\u201d<\/strong> with our very own <strong>Chitrasena\u201d<\/strong>. There were other notable entertainers, <strong>Derryck Cramer<\/strong>, <strong>Jimmy Peck<\/strong>, <strong>Authur Speldewilde<\/strong> <strong>and the Cadets<\/strong>, from whence <strong>Claude Selvaratnam<\/strong> and <strong>the Esquire Set<\/strong> emerged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The 60\u2019s saw the beginnings of teenager <strong>Dalreen de Kretzer<\/strong> singing with her mother <strong>Decima\u2019s <\/strong>travelling tour \u201cDecima presents\u201d. Dalrene subsequently would be the super singer with the \u2018Fireflies\u201d and is still very much alive (as Dalreen Suby) in the current music scene. Her daughter <strong>Debbie Arnolda<\/strong> has inherited the musical talents of her mum, and was an up and coming artist of the time. \u00a0I had the pleasure of impromptu accompaniment by Debbie when requested to sing \u201cO Holy Night\u201d at a corporate function in Colombo many years later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">One of the finest entertainers of the era, still going strong, is <strong>Desmond deSilva<\/strong>&#8211; crowned \u201cBaila King\u201d , who 2 years ago celebrated his \u201cGolden Jubilee\u201d in Show business. Desmond sang with the Fireflies, Spitfires, Jetliners, and his own group <strong>\u201cThe Clan<\/strong>\u201d. Desmond lives in Sydney with wife Phyllis, and is heavily sought after, all year around. Desmond is undisputedly the finest entertainer from Sri Lanka.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Nimal Mendis<\/strong> and <strong>Winston Jayewardene<\/strong> worked with a lot of the artists in composing original tunes and recordings. Nimal\u2019s composition of \u201cKisses in the Dark\u201d sung by British songstress <strong>Mary Marshall<\/strong> was one of an array of popular compositions both western and local. <strong>Noeline Mendis ((later Honter<\/strong>) sang a popular tribute to \u201cThe City of Colombo\u201d. \u00a0<strong>Indra Raj<\/strong>, <strong>Raj Jalaldeen<\/strong>, <strong>Lucien Perera<\/strong>, <strong>Claude <\/strong>and<strong> Nilu Fernando, Milroy Passe deSilva<\/strong> were exceptional musicians who as well contributed to the richness of the music of the times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">During this time we enjoyed the concerts, dances shows featuring The Fireflies, Spitfires, Jetliners, Desmond and the Clan, <strong>Gabo<\/strong> and <strong>the Breakaways<\/strong> with <strong>Maurice Balasingham<\/strong>, <strong>Harold Seneviratne<\/strong> <strong>with Malcolm de Kauwe , Arden Nelson, Raddy Ferreira, Jeffrey Labrooy, Adrian Ferdinands,\u00a0 Sam the Man and the Gaylords,<\/strong> <strong>Hezonites, Savage, Amazing Grace, Saybhan and Tempo<\/strong>, with <strong>Sherwin Jaya<\/strong>, <strong>\u201cTalk of the Town\u201d<\/strong>, <strong>Cass Ziard<\/strong>, <strong>Gazali Amit<\/strong> <strong>Combo<\/strong>,with <strong>Ahmed Miskin<\/strong>. \u00a0\u00a0Ahmed, a fine Jim Reeves exponent, tragically died in a road accident on Galle Road, Colpetty. Other popular vocalists of the era include, <strong>Reggie Ko<\/strong>ch, <strong>Andy Bavan <\/strong>and<strong> Prins Rutnam<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The lead singers of many beat groups included <strong>Sohan Weerasinghe, Maxi Rozairo, Sohan Peiris, Conrad and Angelo de Silva, Budrin Musafer, <\/strong>and<strong> Alston Koch. <\/strong>Alston continued singing in Australia and recently in collaboration with producer<strong>, Chandran Rutnam.<\/strong> has ventured onto the silver screen.<strong> Noelin Honter (Mendis), \u00a0Priyanthi Manamperi, Shyami Fonseka, Maya Sittamapalam<\/strong> were the pick of other female singers during the period of the 60\u2019s..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">There were the classical singers who as well entertained on our stages<strong>. Douglas and Estelle de Niese, Lorraine Abeyeskera, Lylie Godrirdge, Nihal Fonseka<\/strong>, come to mind. \u00a0There were <strong>Gerald Cooray, Inspector Gerry Paul, Fr.Ignatius Perera, Fr.Claver Perera, Arthur Van Langenberg<\/strong> who trained and conducted many choirs and singers who performed regularly. Many talented young musicians, the likes of <strong>Dwight Van Gramberg and Thaku Chugani<\/strong> who made up the <strong>Junior Rythmiers<\/strong>, and more of a later era emerged in the form of <strong>Joey Lewis, Nihal Basnayke, Roger Menezies, Joe Tambimuttu, Basil and Alfo Paiva.<\/strong> All versatile musicians who lent their multi talents to many a leading group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">It would be remiss of me not to include the name of <strong>Neville Fernando of \u201cLos Caballeros\u201d<\/strong> fame, and others like <strong>Annesley Malewana, Indranee Perera<\/strong> and her sisters, <strong>Clarence Wijewardene, C. T. Fernando, La Bambas, Eranga and Priyanga <\/strong>and many others who enriched the music of this era. The names would never end, but lest we forget, we owe them gratitude for the talent they shared, and continue to entertain us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Priyanthi and Raj<\/strong> married and live in Toronto. So does Nihal Fonseka with his wife soprano Carol-Eve, Maurice Balasingham enjoys life with his family and grandkids, making a collection of artists continuing the traditions of yesteryear even today. Stephen Alagaratnam recently retired from his academic life and is quite busy in Winnipeg, Canada. Bill Forbes is domiciled in UK. Dalrene is settled in Colombo but travels a lot for engagements. Desmond Kelly and Desmond de Silva, Christine and Victor, together with most others artists of the era migrated and live in Australia. They are still active musically, and will be seen on and off appearing at functions of the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Many of those mentioned have gone to the Great Beyond and sing with the heavenly choirs, while we remember the distant drums that call us to set sails in the sunset, to make music as we did before somewhere beyond the sea, when for our last farewell, we will meet once more somewhere beyond that far away shore. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Memories are made of this- A tribute to the Colombo Music Scene of the 60\u2019s Compiled by;
