Melbourne has been agog with excitement at the return of Melbourne-born, internationally recognised Danielle de Niese (Danni to friends) for her Australian debut\u00a0to star in the lead role of The Merry Widow.\u00a0 Huge\u00a0street\u00a0posters, some gracing Federation Square, Glen Waverley (near her\u00a0 former\u00a0Melbourne home) and Keysborough, and banners lining St Kilda Road near\u00a0the Arts Centre, Melbourne, are testimony to the welcome home Opera Australia\u00a0 had for this diva who left Melbourne as a little girl and\u00a0returned home\u00a0as\u00a0an adult and\u00a0international star, described by some as the opera world’s answer to\u00a0Beyonce.<\/span><\/p>\n

Danielle didn’t disappoint and\u00a0delivered the results Opera Australia and her Australian fans wanted and\u00a0expected. She\u00a0slipped into her part with a talented\u00a0Australian cast with ease\u00a0and received encore after encore for her own inflection to the lead\u00a0role. Her bubbly and effervescent personality connected well\u00a0with the character’s, making her morph into The Merry Widow a smooth transition.\u00a0A\u00a0witty\u00a0show of dance and song,\u00a0full of\u00a0extravagant art deco mise en scene and\u00a0costumes, The Merry Widow\u00a0transports the audience to the Parisian scene and the famous Maxim’s of Paris, regarded as one of the most famous restaurants in the world, to a\u00a0period\u00a0of elegant couture and clandestine amours.<\/span><\/p>\n

Danielle grew up in Melbourne and\u00a0our families spent a lot of time together. Over these early years,\u00a0I\u00a0watched this little girl with the big voice and big ambitions grow up\u00a0and\u00a0supported her parents’ aspirations and\u00a0big dreams for their daughter as they recognised there was something special about the talent she possessed. The catalyst for change came\u00a0when Danielle, at the age of nine,\u00a0won the Young Talent Time Talent Discovery\u00a0competition in 1988 singing a Whitney Houston medley.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In 1990, realising the time had come when raw ambitions needed redirection, Danielle’s parents decided to leave\u00a0Melbourne for California with Danielle and brother, Andrew,\u00a0 to seek the voice training and\u00a0musical\u00a0recognition they believed their young\u00a0daughter deserved, and their decision paid off.\u00a0 Before long,\u00a0there was no stopping Danielle’s\u00a0rising\u00a0star. Their decision to dare to dream in the City of Angels\u00a0struck gold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The family lived in Hollywood for many years, and although called\u00a0the ‘boulevard of broken dreams’ by some, Danielle found her feet on the ladder of fame, negotiating each step carefully onward and upward\u00a0on the way to success. One of her very early achievements was winning\u00a0an Emmy for TV Presenting at the young\u00a0age of sixteen before she went on to perform in many starring roles. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In 2005 Danni\u00a0was chosen to sing Cleopatra in a production in Glyndebourne in Sussex, England, where she met the owner and\u00a0heir to the Glyndebourne Opera,\u00a0Gus Christie.\u00a0In 2009\u00a0Danielle married her\u00a0Englishman and\u00a0now lives in London, mistress of the famous Glyndebourne Manor House, venue of the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, with\u00a0husband Gus\u00a0and\u00a0their son, Bacchus (Bax), 2.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Danielle is the daughter of Christoper and Beverly (nee Anderson) de Niese,\u00a0known\u00a0in Sri Lankan and Melbourne communities, who now reside\u00a0in New York.\u00a0\u00a0 Danielle hails from musical stock on\u00a0both sides of the family.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Mother Beverly travelled from New York to support\u00a0Danielle on her special Melbourne debut\u00a0tour in November. On this occasion father Chris and husband Gus\u00a0were unable to attend, but son Bax was there to accompany his famous\u00a0mother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0Encore<\/em>\"\"\u00a0Encore<\/em>\"\"\u00a0Encore<\/em> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

“Family means everything to me, said Danielle,\u00a0when asked\u00a0about her close family ties.\u00a0Danielle found time after performances\u00a0to mingle with her Australian cousins, relatives and friends who thronged\u00a0to see her.\u00a0 Witnessing\u00a0her ability to switch off from public figure to\u00a0private person when\u00a0interacting with family and fans, public opinion was clear that here was a girl with her feet planted firmly on the ground, so refreshingly\u00a0unspoiled and lovable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>I asked Danielle what it was that touched her the\u00a0most about her visit to Melbourne and she said, “It’s the welcome home I received and the realisation that I had come a\u00a0full circle – I started singing at six,\u00a0left Melbourne, was nurtured along the way and now I have\u00a0returned home to the open arms of the country that gave me so much. “<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Johnny Young and staff of\u00a0the Bartuccio Dance School were reportedly\u00a0among Danielle’s former Australian\u00a0mentors and teachers who came to watch their former pupil, now as the star of the show. And so did we, up close and personal,\u00a0not\u00a0wanting to miss seeing the little girl we used to know who has changed the way the world sees opera singers –\u00a0sultry,\u00a0sexy and physically\u00a0toned – perform.<\/span><\/p>\n
