ERANGA Tissera and his wife Marian Fernando describe it as one of the most difficult but rewarding decisions they\u2019ve ever made.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0The Sri Lankan raised couple had completed their tertiary studies \u2013\u00a0Mr Tissera in engineering and Ms Fernando in computer science \u2013 and started working when they emigrated almost 9000 kilometres away, to Australia.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
\n

\u201cInitially it was very hard to leave our parents, immediate families and friends, but the move has paid off,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe are better off in Australia and the opportunities are immense here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the best decision we ever made \u2013\u00a0this is the\u00a0land of gold.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The family were four of the 180 people from 32 nations who pledged loyalty to\u00a0their new homeland on Friday, in what was the biggest Australia Day citizenship ceremony in NSW and the largest in Newcastle\u2019s history.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe feel really privileged,\u201d Mr Tissera said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a great\u00a0honour for me and my family to say we are Australians, we think it\u2019s a remarkable achievement in life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThis is our home now and it\u2019s a\u00a0beautiful feeling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said whether those gathered were newly arrived, had resided in the Hunter for a number of years, or lived here all their lives, they were some of the smartest people in the state \u201cnot just for becoming Australian citizens, but for choosing the city of Newcastle as your home\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a wonderful time to be a Novocastrian,\u201d she said. \u201cThe city is going through phenomenal change at the moment and that change is all about improving the quality of life for every single Novocastrian here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Australia Day ambassador Peter Gibbs spoke about how his sister\u2019s death in a police cell in Brewarrina in 1997 was the catalyst for the the IPROWD\u00a0\u00a0(Indigenous Police Recruitment Our Way Delivery)\u00a0program.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mr Tissera said the couple had been speaking from Sri Lanka with Ms Fernando\u2019s Melbourne-based sister when they decided\u00a0Australia\u00a0would provide a brighter future for\u00a0their children, Evan, 4, and Eyan, 18 months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe knew Australia would be a better place for children and there were plenty of opportunities for them,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe education system here is much more advanced compared to Sri Lanka.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cBut even the road network, public transportation, workplaces, the freedom of the press is better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cYou can express yourself without being victimised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIf you are willing to work hard you can have a beautiful life over here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

They lived in Adelaide for two years, before moving\u00a0to Newcastle about three years ago for Mr Tissera\u2019s job at Ampcontrol in\u00a0Warabrook.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThis city has really good people and a really good culture,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe feel very welcome here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s calm and quiet and a great place for the boys to grow up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not hectic or very busy like the big cities, plus we love the beaches \u2013\u00a0Merewether Beach is our favourite place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
