Gas and electric are the main sources of energy in most countries unlike in the past. In the past back in Sri Lanka they used firewood stoves to cook and still some countries they use these resources for energy for cooking. I am cannot advice how to save energy in firewood stove cooking. I have cooked for a short time on firewood stoves, what can I say? The smoke, dust, ash and the heat given out while cooking is far too much to describe here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Majority of the Sri Lankans eat rice and curries at least once a day. There are plenty of varieties of rice including brown and white rice and they all need different times to cook. One needs to experiment and see how long it will take to cook then need to adjust the time as required to cook a particular brand of rice. Some rice grains have no surface protective coating so they might take a shorter time to cook. Brown rice usually takes a little bit of more time than rice with no surface coating.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>What Is Brown Rice?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Brown rice is an unrefined and unpolished whole grain which is\u00a0produced by\u00a0removing the surrounding hull of the rice kernel. Its\u00a0grain\u00a0retains\u00a0its nutrient-dense bran and germ layer. It is chewier as compared to white rice and has a nutty flavour.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Germinated Brown Rice<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Germinated\u00a0brown rice,\u00a0also known as \u2018sprouted brown rice\u2019, is another popular form of brown rice attributing to its\u00a0high nutritional value. The high nourishing content of the germinated brown rice is due to the presence of gama-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The germinated form can be obtained by soaking and sprouting of the brown rice in water for a specified number of hours. This method has been considered best for obtaining the maximum amount of GABA and elevating the levels of\u00a0proteins\u00a0and good enzymes in the germinated brown rice. The process of germination also leads to significant increase in essential components such as frolic acid, lysine,\u00a0magnesium,\u00a0potassium,\u00a0vitamin E,\u00a0niacin,\u00a0vitamin B\u00a06,\u00a0thiamine, and dietary\u00a0fibre\u00a0in the brown rice. These nutrients aid in better absorption during\u00a0digestion\u00a0and prevent intestinal irritations, inflammations, and\u00a0allergies. It\u00a0can be stored in dried form to increase its shelf life without affecting its advanced nutritional worth.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Why we tempt to eat Brown Rice?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Most of us are aware of the fact that brown rice is better than white rice. The reason that makes it\u00a0stand out is the quality and quantity of nutrients\u00a0it offers. The process of milling that converts brown rice into white rice strips away most of its nutritional value then they use the stripped out brown layer to feed the animals such as cattle and chickens. Brown rice thus retains its immense treasure of healthful constituents. There are many\u00a0varieties\u00a0of brown rice\u00a0available\u00a0in even in supermarkets in Colombo. Brown rice with their unique flavour, aromatic components, and varied\u00a0concentration\u00a0of fatty acids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Varieties of brown rice such as Jasmine or Basmati still contain their germ and bran layers, meaning they provide fitness buffs with a range of important nutrients including\u00a0B vitamins, bone-building phosphorus, and\u00a0magnesium. Although data shows that about half of all Americans don&#8217;t consume their daily quota of magnesium, this mineral is needed for proper muscle functioning. Low levels of magnesium may also contribute to or at least predict heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>\u00a0The basics on how to cook brown rice; there\u2019s not much to it!<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>The amount of water recommended for cooking long- and medium-grain brown rice varies depending on the source, from as little as 1\u00bd parts water to as much as 3 parts water per 1 part rice. I\u2019ve always preferred 2 1\/2 parts water to 1 part rice. For example, 2 1\/2 cups water to 1 cup rice. Remember to rinse the rice well before cooking. Combine in a medium saucepan with the water. Bring to a slow boil, then lower the heat, Cover (leave lid ajar) and simmer for 30 minutes,\u00a0or until the water is absorbed. If the rice isn\u2019t tender to your liking at this point, add 1\/2 cup additional water and continue to simmer until it\u2019s absorbed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Brown rice gets its colour, flavour and texture from the bran layers that remain on the rice when it goes through the hulling process. It&#8217;s milled for less time than white rice, which is why it retains the bran layers and is known for being a healthy source of fibre and for its chewy texture and nut-like flavour. There are four different types of brown rice \u2014 short grain, medium grain, long grain and light brown \u2014 and each takes a different amount of times to cook.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Health Benefits of Brown Rice<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Introduction of brown rice in the diet brings tremendous health benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Controls Diabetes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Brown rice is beneficial for\u00a0diabetics\u00a0and hyperglycaemic individuals. It has a low glycaemic index which is helpful in reducing insulin surges and assists in the stabilization of blood\u00a0sugar\u00a0levels in the body. A comparative\u00a0study conducted in this regard revealed that it is rich in phytic acid, fibre, and essential polyphenols. It is a complex carbohydrate which helps in the slower release of sugar as compared to white rice. The American diabetes association also recommends choosing nutrient-dense brown rice over white rice for\u00a0diabetics\u00a0in order to accomplish the\u00a0requirement of essential\u00a0vitamins, fibre, and minerals in their diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Antioxidant Activity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Brown rice is rich in powerful antioxidants which protect\u00a0against damage caused by oxygen free radicals. By looking at the various health benefits of eating brown rice, I am sure anyone would tempt to eat brown rice than white rice.
