Sri Lankan Business and Investment Promotion in Melbourne:\u00a0<\/strong>Story by\u00a0Marie Pietersz, Melbourne<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Minister for Trade and Investment,\u00a0Innovation & Digital Economy, Small Business and International Education,\u00a0Hon Philip Didakis, MLC, in association with the Aus-Lanka Business Council, hosted Sri Lankan and Australian business representatives to\u00a0a trade and investment promotion\u00a0at the Investment Centre of Victoria, ANZ Tower, 55 Collins Street, Melbourne, on 23\u00a0February.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Minister Didakis is due to visit Sri Lanka in March to build on the strong trade relationships the two countries already have and to encourage further investment by Sri Lankan businesses into Victoria and vice versa.<\/span><\/p>\n

About 150 invitees attended and included senior Government officials of the Victorian Government,\u00a0Consul\u00a0General of Sri Lanka for Victoria, Consul (Commercial) of the Consulate-General in Sydney, present and former Victorian MPs, members of local Councils , Committee members of the Aus-Lanka Business Council,\u00a0and business leaders from the Sri Lankan community in Victoria. Exhibitors of Sri Lankan products in Australia\u00a0were also present.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Invitees were greeted by\u00a0winners of the Miss Sri Lanka-Australia and Miss South Asia-Australia Pageants and\u00a0treated to an engaging\u00a0cultural performance comprising Sri Lankan dancers\u00a0and drummers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hon. Frank McGuire, MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business and Innovation, representing\u00a0the Minister,\u00a0formally announced the Minister’s impending visit\u00a0to Sri Lanka with the\u00a0Trade Commissioner for South Asia, Ms Michelle Wade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr McGuire’s\u00a0speech\u00a0highlighted\u00a0the longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship between\u00a0Victoria and Sri Lanka and\u00a0stated that the Victorian\u00a0Government\u00a0is focusing on business\/investment opportunities between Victoria and Sri Lanka in key areas such as education, agriculture, infrastructure and\u00a0tourism.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Delivering his remarks at the event, Mr. W.G.S. Prasanna, Consul General for Sri Lanka in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania,\u00a0conveyed the appreciation of the Government of Sri Lanka to the\u00a0Victorian Government\u00a0for hosting the event, underlining\u00a0the important\u00a0aspects of the enduring partnership between Sri Lanka and Australia. He\u00a0highlighted\u00a0potential areas for trade and investment in Sri Lanka and invited\u00a0the\u00a0Victorian business community to invest in Sri Lanka.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Sri Lanka and Australia share an enduring partnership,” the\u00a0Consul\u00a0General\u00a0said.\u00a0\u00a0“I feel that the Dictionary definition of ‘partnership’\u00a0is a bit uninteresting and narrow and not appropriate to describe the way I think about the relationship between Australia and Sri Lanka, which is marked by its historical ties, diversity, dialogue and, perhaps most importantly, the shared understanding and engagement between people across many fields. And simply put, the bedrock of this relationship is not just dependent on those popular 3 Cs: curry, cricket and Commonwealth. But I do not mean to say that they are any less important.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Lanka and Australia\u00a0celebrated\u00a070 years of formal diplomatic relations last year, marked by official visits by the Heads of each country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Consul\u00a0General said bilateral cooperation\u00a0between Australia and Sri Lanka had\u00a0surged to a record level of A$1.3\u00a0in 2016-17,\u00a0up by more than 27 per cent compared to the previous financial year\u00a0and extended\u00a0from\u00a0trade and investment,\u00a0sports, education, tourism, defence,\u00a0maritime and regional security, to science and technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He singled out\u00a0Education as the most steadily growing aspect of the economic relationship, with “more than 9500 enrolments of Sri Lankan students in Australia each year and thousands more pursuing Australian-affiliated studies domestically in Sri Lanka. More than half of those students studying in Sri Lanka eventually enrol in Universities and other Institutions in Melbourne,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other significant\u00a0figures announced by the Consul\u00a0General included the rapid growth in Australian tourists visiting Sri Lanka (up by almost 10 per cent for the last year) resulting in\u00a0Sri Lanka\u2019s services exports to Australia grow by more than 36 per cent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Consul\u00a0General said he wished to\u00a0place\u00a0on record his sincere appreciation to the State Government of Victoria for the launch of Sri Lanka Airlines’\u00a0\u00a0recommencement of\u00a0direct flights between Colombo and Melbourne, which is anticipated will provide continued trade growth\u00a0in the years to come.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms. Dilkie Perera, National President of the Aus-Lanka Business Council also addressed the gathering, reiterating the strong trade growth between Victoria and Sri Lanka and highlighting\u00a0the achievements of the Council in the initiatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The event provided\u00a0a forum for\u00a0invitees\u00a0to interact and discuss trade, business and investment opportunities. Mr. Abdul Raheem, Consul (Commercial)\u00a0of the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Sydney was on hand to assist\u00a0invitees with\u00a0information on\u00a0trade and investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
