During this period their connections to Ceylon spanned the\u00a0establishment and growth of the tea industry, right through the political and social\u00a0changes that swept pre and post independence Ceylon. There were times of\u00a0collaboration, interaction and innovation, where the origins of a multi-cultural Eastern-\u00a0Western world emerged out of traditional Ceylon. Many different stories have been\u00a0written and spoken of these times and this is another interesting chapter in that story,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">of how foreigners and locals interacted to shape and influence the emergence of a\u00a0different Ceylon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">We have all heard of Lionel Wendt and his famous photographs of Ceylon. In this\u00a0talk we are privileged to hear more about his other creative endeavours and interests\u00a0as part of his interaction with this Australian family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">William \u201cBill\u201d Mackie\u00a0was born in Nuwara Eliya in 1922 to parents who were originally from Melbourne. His\u00a0early years were spent at the Galaha tea estate near Kandy, before returning to<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Australia for school and to live on a small farm in northern Victoria. He studied\u00a0Agricultural Science at Melbourne University and served in the RAAF during the\u00a0World War II. Bill was a research officer for the Federal Government before he spent\u00a030 years on agricultural research with ICI Australia Ltd. and its associated\u00a0companies. In his retirement he spends much of his time researching and recording\u00a0his family\u2019s history.
