{"id":24557,"date":"2018-03-18T04:48:27","date_gmt":"2018-03-18T04:48:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/?p=24557"},"modified":"2018-03-18T04:48:27","modified_gmt":"2018-03-18T04:48:27","slug":"the-royal-brotherhood-unity-in-diversity-lesson-for-a-fractured-nation-by-faiz-ur-rahman-solankili","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/the-royal-brotherhood-unity-in-diversity-lesson-for-a-fractured-nation-by-faiz-ur-rahman-solankili\/","title":{"rendered":"The Royal Brotherhood \u2013 Unity in Diversity \u2013 Lesson for a fractured Nation &#8211; By Faiz-ur.Rahman (Solankili)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">The Royal Brotherhood<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">\u2013 Unity in Diversity \u2013<\/span> <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Lesson for a fractured Nation<\/span> &#8211;<br \/>\nBy Faiz-ur.Rahman (Solankili)<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3239\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/royal3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"257\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3238\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/royal2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"669\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The Royal College Class of 1958 comprised of One hundred and forty 10 &amp; 11 year olds from all over the Island, from all strata of society and all religions, spoke Sinhala or Tamil at home and also had a smattering of English.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Some came to school by bus, others by car, a few by bicycle and a few walked to school, whilst another group lived in the school hostel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> Very quickly we\u00a0 grew up to be the Royal Brotherhood \u2013 and defined ourselves unashamedly as Royalists, very much like those a hundred years and more before us, and how, many generations after us, will define themselves very proudly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> About forty of us met recently, on the 8th of March 2018, for an evening of reminiscence, nostalgia and camaraderie \u2013 sixty years after that first meeting in January 1958.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">We have been meeting twice a year for about forty years \u2013 during the Royal-Thomian Big Match and during the Christmas holidays when those overseas, returned \u201chome\u201d to see their families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Some of our Royalist brothers have in the years moved to U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Australia, Myanmar (Burma), Pakistan, New Zealand and many other exotic countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Those who could make it this year were Ranil from Scotland, Knightly &amp; Amjad from England and Ranjith &amp; Upali from Sydney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> In past years we had Tin Maung Lwin from Myanmar, Afaq Rizvi from Pakistan\/USA and Mayura Boteju from USA\/Pakistan, David Ferdinands from Toronto, Prasanna Weerasinghe from California,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Rudran Shanmuganathan &amp; Miles Mylvaganam from Sydney, Upali Gunasekera from Perth, Ravi Gooneratne from Christchurch and many others visiting us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">When we &#8211; the island bound &#8211; travel overseas, we are often hosted by our \u201cRoyalist brothers\u201d in those cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> We have seen the assassination of two national leaders (SWRD &amp; RP), numerous other leaders (Gamini Dissanayake, Lalith Athulathmudali, Amirthalingam, Tiruchelvam, et al) and thousands of our best and talented youth &#8211; sacrificed on the altar of ethno-religious disharmony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> We believe, our school boy rivals \u2013 St. Thomas, Trinity, St. Peters, St. Josephs, St. Benedicts, Ananda, Nalanda, Thurstan, Issipatana, Carey, Wesley, Zahira and the 125 year old Hameed al Hussainiya &#8211; schools in Colombo and in the suburbs, too have rich traditions that should be cherished, borne friendships lasting lifetimes \u2013 crossing ethno-religious boundaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"> We learnt of books and men (and life) from our teachers \u2013 lovingly known as Dudley, Kataya, Bella, Ruperty, Pol Tokka, Wariyapola, Bruin, Alavi, Sariffodeen, Thamba, Ratnathicam, Conner, Mudguard, Lena,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Canto, Arasa, Pope, Kotta Silva, EFC, Rev. Kahaduwe Ratnajothi and many others, who represented the rich tapestry of Sri Lanka\u2019s ethno-religious backgrounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>They taught us that it was the strength of character that defined a man.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Our Nation is beset by new challenges \u2013 the radicalisation of one community by bad leaders could easily lead to the radicalisation of other communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Today\u2019s youth, the future leaders of Sri Lanka, forged by the fires of great institutions such as Royal,\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>should join hands across ethno-religious divides and <u>wipe out the menace of disharmony <\/u>that raises its head from time to time, in robes &amp;
