The 56-year-old Wikramanayake, who joined Macquarie in 1987 and currently heads its asset management arm, becomes the group\u2019s first female CEO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-27341\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Shemera-Wikramanayake.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"402\" \/><\/span>Shemara Wikramanayake, left, and Nicholas Moore &#8211;\u00a0Source: Macquarie Group Ltd.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Wikramanayake will inherit a company that\u2019s transformed itself under Moore\u2019s stewardship from an Australian investment bank into the world\u2019s largest infrastructure asset manager, which now earns more than two-thirds of its income overseas. Its asset management, financial services and corporate finance businesses now account for 70 percent of\u00a0earnings. Macquarie\u2019s share price has more than doubled under Moore\u2019s tenure.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"softwall\" data-position=\"3\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In a brief trading update released Thursday, Macquarie said its first-quarter performance was up compared with a year earlier, though down from a strong fourth quarter, and it continues to expect full-year earnings to be in line with last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"hardwall\" data-position=\"4\"><\/div>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Shares Fall<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The\u00a0shares\u00a0fell as much as 4.7 percent in early Sydney trading, before paring losses to be down 2.4 percent at A$121.90 at 12 p.m. in Sydney. The stock has gained 22 percent this year, the best performance on the S&amp;P\/ASX Financials Index, and reached a record A$126.70 on June 28.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cWe are very pleased to see Shemara\u2019s appointment,\u201d UBS Group AG analysts led by Jonathan Mott wrote in a note to clients. \u201cWe hold her in very high regard and believe she too has been fundamental in Macquarie\u2019s success.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Wikramanayake, who was born in the U.K. before her family moved to Australia, becomes the only female CEO among the nation\u2019s 20 biggest companies by market value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Macquarie_Bank.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-27340\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Macquarie_Bank.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"337\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u201cShe\u2019s the right person for the job,\u201d Bell Potter Securities Ltd. head of research TS Lim said, citing Wikramanayake\u2019s track record of delivering profits at the asset management arm and strong people and management skills. \u201cI don\u2019t expect any change in the business model. They\u2019ve de-risked the businesses since the global financial crisis and the returns are very good right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Wikramanayake has worked for Macquarie around the world, including establishing its infrastructure funds in the U.S. and Canada. She was appointed to head its global asset management business in 2008 when Moore took over as CEO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Under her leadership, Macquarie Asset Management has become the company\u2019s fastest-growing and most successful division, employing more than 1,600 staff in 23 countries.
