It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals\u00a0<\/span>(mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained, it became slippery and sometimes\u00a0<\/span>the animals would slip and fall off the roof.<\/span><\/div>\n
Hence the saying,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018It\u2019s raining cats and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span>dogs<\/span><\/em><\/span>.\u2019<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>nice clean bed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That\u2019s how canopy beds came into existence<\/span><\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

Hence the term,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018dirt poor<\/span><\/em>.\u2019 The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>so they spread thresh (straw) on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance-way.\u00a0 Hence, \u2018a thresh hold<\/span>.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cIn those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire.<\/span><\/div>\n
Every day, they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>been there for quite a while.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Hence the rhyme,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old<\/span><\/em><\/span>.\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could \u2018bring home the bacon<\/span><\/em>.\u2019 They would cut off a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>little to share with guests, and would all sit around and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018chew the fat<\/em><\/span>.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cThose with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some\u00a0<\/span>of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often\u00a0<\/span>with tomatoes, so\u00a0<\/span>for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family\u00a0<\/span>got the middle, and guests got the top, or the\u00a0<\/span>\u2018upper crust<\/span><\/em><\/span>.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

The combination would sometimes knock the\u00a0<\/span>imbibers out for a couple of days.\u00a0 Someone walking along the road would take them for\u00a0<\/span>dead and prepare them for burial They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of\u00a0<\/span>days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would\u00a0<\/span>wake up.\u00a0 Hence\u00a0<\/span>the custom of\u00a0<\/span>\u2018holding a \u2018wake<\/span><\/em>.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch markson the inside, and they realized they had been burying people alive.So they would tiea string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the groundand tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night\u00a0(\u2018the graveyardshift\u2019)\u00a0<\/span><\/em>to listen for the bell.Thus, someone could be \u2018saved by the bell<\/span><\/em><\/span>,\u2019 or wasconsidered a \u2018dead ringer.\u2019<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
