The Meeting will commence at 6.30 pm at the Pennant Hills Community Centre, Ramsay Road,\u00a0<\/span>Pennant Hills, NSW 2120. Ramsay Road is off Yarrara Road and the Community Centre is opposite\u00a0<\/span>the Pennant Hills Railway Station. The entrance to the building is from the car park at the<\/span><\/span>
\nback of the building. Members and their Guests are welcome.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is to inform you of an unforeseen change to the programme announced\u00a0<\/span>for our 24 February meeting.\u00a0<\/span>Our scheduled speaker, His Excellency Mr Somasunderam Skandakumar,\u00a0<\/span>is unfortunately unable to come to Sydney due to ill health. As a consequence,\u00a0<\/span>Mr Thiru Arumugam, immediate past President of the CSA has kindly agreed to\u00a0<\/span>speak on the topic of \u201cDeekirikevage Saradiel: the 19th century Robin Hood\u00a0<\/span>of Ceylon\u201d.

\nAMENDED NOTICE OF GENERAL MEETING<\/span><\/strong>
\nThe First General Meeting of the Ceylon Society of Australia for 2019 will take\u00a0<\/span>place on Sunday, 24th February 2019 commencing at 6.30 pm at the Pennant<\/span>
\nHills Community Centre, Ramsay Road, Pennant Hills, NSW 2120. Ramsay\u00a0<\/span>Road is off Yarrara Road and the Community Centre is opposite the Pennant<\/span>
\nHills Railway Station. The entrance to the building is from the car park at the\u00a0<\/span>back of the building. Members and their Guests are welcome.
\n<\/span>
\nThiru Arumugam will speak on the topic of \u201cDeekirikevage Saradiel:\u00a0<\/span>the 19th century Robin Hood of Ceylon\u201d. Thiru needs no introduction as he is\u00a0<\/span>our immediate Past President and he has spoken at our meetings on\u00a0<\/span>previous occasions.
\n<\/span>
\nSaradiel was born in 1832 in the Kegalle District. He was from a poor\u00a0<\/span>family and due to discrimination he formed a gang and drifted into a life of banditry.<\/span>
\nHe robbed the homes of the British Coffee Planters and regularly held up\u00a0<\/span>the Colombo-Kandy Mail Coach. Like Robin Hood he distributed the proceeds<\/span>
\nof his activities among the poor people of the district and became a local hero.
\n<\/span>
\nHis hideout was a secret cave on Uthuwankanda Mountain. The British Governor\u00a0<\/span>became alarmed at his activities and changed the regulations so that Ceylonese\u00a0<\/span>Policemen could carry arms. After several narrow escapes he was finally\u00a0<\/span>arrested on 21st March 1864 and the trial was held in Kandy a fortnight later.
\n<\/span>
\nThe talk will be illustrated with several slides.
\n<\/span>
\nSOCIAL: After a brief question time period, the usual Social will follow. Those\u00a0<\/span>able are requested to kindly bring non-sweet savoury finger food. Please avoid<\/span>
\ncakes with icing as the general preferences are for plain cakes, sandwiches and\u00a0<\/span>savoury pastries. As an alternative, a donation to the CSA to help defray costs<\/span>

\nHis Excellency Mr Somasundaram Skandakumar,<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\nHigh Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Australia<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Mr Skandakumar was educated at Royal College, Colombo. Playing for Royal in\u00a0<\/span>the traditional cricket match against St. Thomas\u2019, he won the \u2018Best Performance\u2018\u00a0<\/span>Award in 1966. He entered the University of Ceylon, Colombo in 1967 where he\u00a0<\/span>studied for a Bachelor of Science Degree, graduating in 1970. He\u00a0<\/span>played cricket for the University, winning the Award for the \u201cMost Outstanding\u00a0<\/span>Sportsman\u201d of the University in 1970.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\nAfter graduating, he joined Whittals Estates as an Executive and\u00a0<\/span>then in 1974, George Steuarts and Co. where he worked for the next 34 years rising\u00a0<\/span>to Managing Director and Group Chairman. He retired in 2008 overseeing eight\u00a0<\/span>years, in the role of Group Chairman, described as \u201cone of the most successful in\u00a0<\/span>the history of the Company and the Group\u201d.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\nMr Skandakumar continued to participate in first class cricket,\u00a0<\/span>captaining the Tamil Union Cricket Team from 1982 to 1985. He was Secretary of\u00a0<\/span>the Sri Lanka Board of Control for Cricket from 1989 to 1992 and later served as\u00a0<\/span>President of the Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club in 1998- 2000.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Since retiring from commercial life in 2008, Mr Skandakumar resettled to his second\u00a0<\/span>home in Haputale and has been engaged mainly in social and charity works.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\nHe has been the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Australia since\u00a0<\/span>August 2015.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\nHis Excellency will speak on The Plantation Industry, once the\u00a0<\/span>mainstay of the Sri Lankan Economy, that has over more than 150 years seen many\u00a0<\/span>changes. Mr Skandakumar will share his own knowledge of that transition, giving\u00a0<\/span>his personal views on the merits of those changes.
\n<\/span><\/span>
\nSpecial Social: After a brief question time, a Special Social will follow to farewell\u00a0<\/span>His Excellency Mr Skandakumar who finishes his term as Sri Lankan High Commissioner\u00a0<\/span>in Australia shortly. A light dinner will be available at the Social, and\u00a0<\/span>those participating are kindly requested to contribute $10 towards the catering cost.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
