Her &#8220;Don&#8217;t give up on Sri Lanka&#8221; tells us that &#8220;all is for the best, in the best of possible Worlds&#8221;.<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Voltaire spoke these immortal words many many moons ago, &amp; Ms Hinson echoes them, in her own style. My first night in the north (then mostly off-limits to tourists) was on an army base that had been a training camp for Tamil Tiger suicide bombers in 2009. It was a serious mission but seriously fun \u2013 we celebrated arriving in<u><\/u><u><\/u>Colombo<u><\/u><u><\/u>\u00a0with drinks at The Kingsbury hotel&#8217;s rooftop bar and curries at the Cinnamon Grand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35396 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dont-give-up-on-Sri-Lanka-2.jpg\" alt=\"Don't give up on Sri Lanka 2\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">I learned a lot about, and fell in love with,\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u>Sri Lanka<u><\/u><u><\/u>. And \u2013 forgive me for using a clich\u00e9 often used for people who have been to hell and back \u2013 I was amazed by Sri Lankans&#8217; resilience, their determination to transform their country and put the civil war behind them \u2013 which they did.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Sadly, we&#8217;re struggling to do the same. Along with three churches, both The Kingsbury and the Cinnamon Grand were targeted by Islamist suicide bombers in April, killing 258. News reports referenced a &#8216;troubled past&#8217;, streaming footage of the \u2013 totally unconnected \u2013 civil war, which took place from 1983 to 2009. We must be careful not to conflate the two and create a false impression of the place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35397 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dont-give-up-on-Sri-Lanka-3.jpg\" alt=\"Don't give up on Sri Lanka 3\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Scenery: A highland tea plantation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">I&#8217;ve visited\u00a0<u><\/u>Sri Lanka<u><\/u>\u00a0several times and a 2017 trip to<u><\/u><u><\/u>Colombo<u><\/u><u><\/u>\u00a0also stands out. I explored it with local guide Kieshokanth, who took me to tiny caf\u00e9s for teeth-rottingly sweet glasses of faluda, a neon-coloured drink made with jelly. I visited the home of\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u>Colombo<u><\/u><u><\/u>\u00a0local Miss Daisy for sea-bass curry and explored the chaotic fish market, grabbing laughing locals when I slipped on fish guts.\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u>Colombo<u><\/u><u><\/u>&#8216;s candy-striped Jami-Ul-Alfar mosque remains the most beautiful building I&#8217;ve clapped eyes on.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Currently, the Foreign Office is asking travelers to avoid\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u>Sri Lanka<u><\/u><u><\/u>\u00a0for all but essential travel and I&#8217;d never advocate visits to unsafe countries. But what happens when the official warnings lift? We tend to see terror attacks as one-offs when they happen in the West but with lesser-known regions a lack of understanding leads to incorrect assumptions about similar events, leading them to still be written off for the wrong reasons.<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35398 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dont-give-up-on-Sri-Lanka-4.jpg\" alt=\"Don't give up on Sri Lanka 4\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000000;\"><strong>After the bombs: Prayers in the street following the terrorist attacks in April<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">With\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u>Sri Lanka<u><\/u><u><\/u>, it&#8217;s essential we let security forces do their job and acknowledge the attacks&#8217; devastating impact. However, headlines referencing troubled pasts don&#8217;t portray reality. Post-civil war, tourism flourished. What&#8217;s struck me on visits \u2013 including last September&#8217;s sail along the gorgeous east coast, ravaged by the civil war, now a tourism hotspot \u2013 is Sri Lankans&#8217; determination to move forward. Securing a prosperous future relies on outsiders doing the same.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">After all, if we write off destinations that have, at some point, experienced terrorism or war \u2013 like\u00a0<u><\/u>France<u><\/u>,\u00a0<u><\/u>Spain<u><\/u>,\u00a0<u><\/u>Turkey<u><\/u>, the\u00a0<u><\/u>US<u><\/u>,\u00a0<u><\/u>Thailand<u><\/u>,\u00a0<u><\/u>Germany<u><\/u>,\u00a0<u><\/u>Australia<u><\/u>,\u00a0<u><\/u><u><\/u>New Zealand<u><\/u><u><\/u>\u00a0\u2013 then there aren&#8217;t many left.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-35399 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/image001.gif\" alt=\"metro\" width=\"154\" height=\"48\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
