From the\u00a0 beginning, Dad was fascinated with this\u00a0 enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live\u00a0 with our family.\u00a0 The stranger was quickly\u00a0 accepted and was around from then on.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">As\u00a0 I grew up, I never questioned his place in my\u00a0 family. In my young mind, he had a special\u00a0 niche. My parents were complementary\u00a0 instructors: Mum taught me good from evil, and\u00a0 Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger&#8230; he\u00a0 was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and\u00a0 comedies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">If\u00a0 I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers\u00a0 about the past, understood the present and even\u00a0 seemed able to predict the future!\u00a0 He took\u00a0 my family to the first premiership game.\u00a0 He made me laugh, and he made me\u00a0 cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad\u00a0 didn&#8217;t seem to mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Sometimes, Mum\u00a0 would get up quietly while the rest of us were\u00a0 shushing each other to listen to what he had to\u00a0 say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace\u00a0 and quiet.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">(I\u00a0 wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger\u00a0 to leave.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Dad ruled our household with\u00a0 certain moral convictions, but the stranger\u00a0 never felt obligated to honor them.\u00a0 Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our\u00a0 home &#8211; not from us, our friends or any\u00a0 visitors\u00a0 Our long time visitor, however,\u00a0 got away with four-letter words that burned my\u00a0 ears and made my dad squirm and my mother\u00a0 blush.\u00a0 My Dad didn&#8217;t permit the liberal\u00a0 use of alcohol but the stranger encouraged us to\u00a0 try it on a regular basis.\u00a0 He made\u00a0 cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, and pipes\u00a0 distinguished. He talked freely (much too\u00a0 freely!) about sex.\u00a0 His comments were\u00a0 sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and\u00a0 generally embarrassing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">I now know that\u00a0 my early concepts about relationships were\u00a0 influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after\u00a0 time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet\u00a0 he was seldom rebuked&#8230; And NEVER asked to\u00a0 leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">More than forty years have passed\u00a0 since the stranger moved in with our family. He\u00a0 has blended right in and is not nearly as\u00a0 fascinating as he was at first. Still, if you\u00a0 could walk into my parents&#8217; den today, you would\u00a0 still find him sitting over in his corner,\u00a0 waiting for someone to listen to him talk and\u00a0 watch him draw his pictures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">His\u00a0 name?&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">We\u00a0 just call him &#8216;TV.&#8217;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">(Note:\u00a0 This should be required reading for every\u00a0 household!) He\u00a0 has a wife now&#8230;.we call her\u00a0 &#8216;Computer.&#8217;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Their\u00a0 first child is &#8220;Cell Phone&#8221;.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Second\u00a0 child &#8220;video games&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">By the way, they now have a wonderful grand child she is a genius!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">she is fondly called &#8220;Whatsup&#8221;..<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">She is nearly more popular than\u00a0 her mom her older cousin is &#8221; Facebook&#8221; and new baby cousins\u00a0 are &#8220;Snapchat, Instagram &#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">*This Stranger and members of its family appear to have taken up permanent residence in our homes and we seem powerless to check their excesses*<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE STRANGER I GREW UP WITH &amp;
