I am the first to admit, that although I wasn&#8217;t too happy about leaving &#8221; My lovely Island Home&#8221;, as I call her (Countries &amp; Ships are generally referred to, in the feminine gender), I appreciated the fact that we would soon be calling Australia home.,<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0This particular little &#8220;story&#8221; however, is just about a hitchiker&#8217;s guide to this great brown sunburnt Land. color: #000080;\">Fame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">&#8220;Australia is a\u00a0 very confusing place, taking up a large amount of the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Bottom half of the planet.\u00a0 It is recognizable fro\u00a0 orbit because of many<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Unusual features, including\u00a0 what at first looks like an enormous bite taken<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Out\u00a0 of its southern edge; a wall of sheer cliffs which\u00a0 plunge into the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Girting sea.\u00a0 Geologists assure us\u00a0 that this is simply an accident of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Geomorphology, but\u00a0 they still call it the &#8220;Great Australian Bight&#8221;,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Proving that not only are they covering up a\u00a0 more Frightening theory but<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">They can&#8217;t spell\u00a0 either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">The first of the confusing things about\u00a0 Australia is the status of the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Place.\u00a0 Where\u00a0 other landmasses and sovereign lands are classified\u00a0 as<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Continent, island or country, Australia is\u00a0 considered all three.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Typically, it is unique in\u00a0 this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">The second confusing thing\u00a0 about Australia is the animals.\u00a0 They can\u00a0 be<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Divided into three categories: Poisonous, Odd, and\u00a0 Sheep.\u00a0 It is true that<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Of the 10 most poisonous\u00a0 arachnids on the planet, Australia has 9 of them.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Actually, it would be more accurate to say that of the 9\u00a0 most poisonous<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Arachnids, Australia has all of them.\u00a0 However, there are few snakes,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Possibly because the\u00a0 spiders have killed them all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">But even the\u00a0 spiders won&#8217;t go near the sea.\u00a0 Any visitors should\u00a0 be<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Careful to check inside boots (before putting them\u00a0 on), under toilet seats<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">(before sitting down) and\u00a0 generally everywhere else.\u00a0 A stick is very<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Useful for this task.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">The last confusing thing\u00a0 about Australia is the inhabitants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">A short\u00a0 history: Sometime around 40,000 years ago some people\u00a0 arrived in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Boats from the north.\u00a0 They ate all\u00a0 the available food, and a lot of them<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Died.\u00a0 The\u00a0 ones who survived learned respect for the balance\u00a0 of nature,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">man&#8217;s proper place in the scheme of\u00a0 things, and spiders.\u00a0 They settled in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">And spent\u00a0 a lot of the intervening time making up\u00a0 strange stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Then, around 200 years ago,\u00a0 Europeans arrived in boats from the north.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">More\u00a0 accurately, European convicts were sent, with a few\u00a0 deranged people<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">In charge.\u00a0 They tried to plant\u00a0 their crops in autumn (failing to take<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Account of the\u00a0 reversal of the seasons), ate all their food, and a\u00a0 lot of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Them died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">About then the sheep arrived,\u00a0 and have been treasured ever since.\u00a0 It is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Interesting to note here that the Europeans always\u00a0 consider themselves<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Vastly superior to any other race\u00a0 they encounter, since they can lie,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Cheat, steal and\u00a0 litigate (marks of a civilized culture they say),\u00a0 whereas<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">All the Aboriginals can do is happily survive\u00a0 being left in the middle of a<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Vast red-hot desert,\u00a0 equipped with a stick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Eventually, the new lot of\u00a0 people stopped being Europeans on &#8216;extended<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Holiday\u00a0 and became Australians.\u00a0 The changes are subtle,\u00a0 but deep, caused<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">By the mind-stretching expanses of\u00a0 nothingness and eerie quiet, where a<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Person can sit\u00a0 perfectly still and look deep inside themselves to\u00a0 the core<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Of their essence, their reasons for being, and\u00a0 the necessity of checking<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Inside their boots every\u00a0 morning for fatal surprises.\u00a0 They also picked\u00a0 up<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">The most finely tuned sense of irony in the world,\u00a0 and the Aboriginal gift<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">For making up stories.\u00a0 Be\u00a0 warned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">There is also the matter of the\u00a0 beaches.\u00a0 Australian beaches are simply the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Nicest and best in the world, although anyone actually\u00a0 venturing into the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Sea will have to contend with\u00a0 sharks, stinging jellyfish, stonefish (a fish<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Which\u00a0 sits on the bottom of the sea, pretends to be a rock\u00a0 and has<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Venomous barbs sticking out of its back that\u00a0 will kill<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Just from the pain) and surfboarders.\u00a0\u00a0 However, watching a beach sunset<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Is worth the\u00a0 risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">As a result of all this\u00a0 hardship, dirt, thirst and wombats, you would<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Expect\u00a0 Australians to be a dour lot.\u00a0 Instead, they are\u00a0 genial, jolly,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Cheerful and always willing to share a\u00a0 kind word with a stranger.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Faced with insurmountable\u00a0 odds and impossible problems, they smile<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Disarmingly\u00a0 and look for a stick.\u00a0 Major engineering feats have\u00a0 been<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Performed with sheets of corrugated iron, string\u00a0 and mud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Alone of all the races on earth, they\u00a0 seem to be free from the &#8216;Grass is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Greener on the\u00a0 other side of the fence&#8217; syndrome, and\u00a0 roundly proclaim<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">That Australia is, in fact, the\u00a0 other side of that fence.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">They call the land &#8220;Oz&#8221; or\u00a0 &#8220;Godzone&#8221; (a verbal contraction of &#8220;God&#8217;s Own<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Country&#8221;).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">THE IRRITATING THING ABOUT THIS IS THEY MAY\u00a0 BE RIGHT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">TIPS TO SURVIVING\u00a0 AUSTRALIA<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Don&#8217;t ever put your hand down a hole\u00a0 for any reason WHATSOEVER.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">The beer is stronger\u00a0 than you think, regardless of how strong you think it<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Always carry a stick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Air-conditioning\u00a0 is imperative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Do not attempt to use Australian\u00a0 slang unless you are a trained linguist<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">and extremely\u00a0 good in a fist fight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Wear thick\u00a0 socks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Take good maps.\u00a0 Stopping to ask\u00a0 directions only works when there are<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">people\u00a0 nearby<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">If you leave the urban areas, carry\u00a0 several litres of water with you at all<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">times, or you\u00a0 will die.\u00a0 And don&#8217;t forget a stick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Even in\u00a0 the most embellished stories told by Australians, there\u00a0 is always<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">a core of truth that it is unwise to\u00a0 ignore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">HOW TO IDENTIFY AUSTRALIANS<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">They\u00a0 waddle when they walk due to the 53 expired petrol\u00a0 discount vouchers<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">stuffed in their wallet or\u00a0 purse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">They pronounce Melbourne as\u00a0 &#8220;Melbin&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">They think it makes perfect sense to\u00a0 decorate highways with large<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">fibreglass bananas,\u00a0 prawns and sheep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">They think &#8220;Woolloomooloo&#8221; is a\u00a0 perfectly reasonable name for a place, that<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">&#8220;Wagga\u00a0 Wagga&#8221; can be abbreviated to &#8220;Wagga&#8221;, but &#8220;Woy Woy&#8221;\u00a0 can&#8217;t be called<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">&#8220;Woy&#8221;.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Their hamburgers will\u00a0 contain beetroot.\u00a0 Apparently it&#8217;s a\u00a0 must-have.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">They don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s summer until the\u00a0 steering wheel is too hot to handle.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">They\u00a0 believe that all train timetables are works of\u00a0 fiction.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">And they all carry a stick and say &#8220;have\u00a0 a good day mate &#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;
