It is hard to imagine that 78 years have now come and gone since the United States of America got involved in World War 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Whatever people now say, whatever they think of this great Country run by Donald Trump, the fact remains that the big &#8220;picture&#8221; of our World would now be entirely different, and not necessarily a &#8220;picturesque&#8221; one, had not the Yanks provided these exploits par-excellence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Taking nothing away from other Countries such as Britain, Australia, New Zealand and even little Ceylon, to mention just four, it is the U.S.A. of that particular era, that was fundamental for the eventual victory of the War, and for this, we owe them, and, of course, every single Member of the Armed Forces who fought so bravely, with thousands of them even laying down their lives so that we could live in peace.\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/r.s.ls\/\">R.S.Ls<\/a>\u00a0 everywhere remember these Men &amp; Women with their thought-provoking &#8220;Lest we forget&#8221;, annually, and, to complete this sad phrase, I simply add my own, saying\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">&#8220;FORGET US NOT&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29910 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Desmond-Kelly-9.jpg\" alt=\"Desmond Kelly\" width=\"125\" height=\"178\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Desmond Kelly.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">(Editor-in-Chief).&#8211;eLanka.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Carefully study this artwork. They bombed Tokyo 78 years ago.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"font-weight: 400;\" width=\"640\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"640\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>They once were among the most universally admired and revered men in the United States .. There were 80 of the Raiders in April 1942, when they carried out one of the most courageous and heart-stirring military operations in this nation&#8217;s history. The mere mention of their unit&#8217;s name, in those years, would bring tears to the eyes of grateful Americans.<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39600 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"501\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><strong>After Japan &#8216;s sneak attack on Pearl Harbor,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><strong>with the United States reeling and wounded,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><strong>something dramatic was needed to turn the war effort around.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\">\u00a0<strong>Even though there were no friendly airfields close enough to Japan<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><strong>for the United States to launch a retaliation, a daring plan was devised.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><strong>Sixteen B-25s were modified so that they could take off from the deck of an aircraft carrier.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\"><strong>This had never before been tried &#8212; sending such big, heavy bombers from a carrier.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39601 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders3-e1573278140542.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"488\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39602 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders4-e1573278200942.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"442\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>The 16 five-man crews, under the command of Lt. Col. James Doolittle,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>who himself flew the lead plane off the USS Hornet,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>knew that they would not be able to return to the carrier.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>They would have to hit Japan and then hope to make it to China for a safe landing.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39603 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders5-e1573278273547.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"459\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>But on the day of the raid, the Japanese military caught wind of the plan.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>The Raiders were told that they would have to take off from much farther out<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>in the Pacific Ocean than they had counted on.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>They were told that because of this they would not have enough fuel to make it to safety. And those men went anyway.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39604 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"362\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>They bombed Tokyo and then flew as far as they could.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>Four planes crash-landed; 11 more crews bailed out, and three of the Raiders died.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>Eight more were captured; three were executed.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>Another died of starvation in a Japanese prison camp. And, no matter what it takes, we will win.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>Of the 80 Raiders, 62 survived the war. They were celebrated as national heroes, models of bravery.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produced a motion picture based on the raid; &#8220;Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo ,&#8221; starring Spencer Tracy and Van Johnson, was a patriotic and emotional box-office hit, and the phrase became part of the national lexicon. In the movie-theater previews for the film, MGM proclaimed that it was presenting the story&#8230;&#8230;..<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>&#8220;with supreme pride.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39609 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders12-e1573278645975.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"408\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39610 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders13-e1573278700942.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"482\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>Beginning in 1946, the surviving Raiders have held a reunion each April,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>to commemorate the mission. The reunion is in a different city each year.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>In 1959, the city of Tucson , Arizona , as a gesture of respect and gratitude,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>presented the Doolittle Raiders with a set of 80 silver goblets.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>Each goblet was engraved with the name of a Raider.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39611 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders14-e1573278778879.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"383\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39612 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders15-e1573278826551.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"459\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>Every year, a wooden display case bearing all 80 goblets is transported to the reunion city.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>Each time a Raider passes away, his goblet is turned upside down in the case at the next reunion,<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>as his old friends bear solemn witness.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39613 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders16-e1573278907183.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"410\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>Also in the wooden case is a bottle of 1896 Hennessy Very Special cognac.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>The year is not happenstance: 1896 was when Jimmy Doolittle was born.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39614 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders16-1-e1573278971156.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"410\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>There has always been a plan: When there are only two surviving Raiders, they would open the bottle, at last drink from it, and toast their comrades who preceded them in death.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>As 2013 began, there were five living Raiders; then, in February, Tom Griffin passed away at age 96.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39615 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders18-e1573279038740.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>What a man he was. After bailing out of his plane over a mountainous Chinese forest after the Tokyo raid, he became ill with malaria, and almost died. When he recovered, he was sent to Europe to fly more combat missions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>He was shot down, captured, and spent 22 months in a German prisoner of war camp.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39616 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders19-e1573279113376.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"418\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>The selflessness of these men, the sheer guts &#8230; There was a passage in the Cincinnati Enquirer obituary for Mr. Griffin that, on the surface, had nothing to do with the war, but that was emblematic of the depth of his sense of duty and devotion:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>&#8220;When his wife became ill and needed to go into a nursing home, he visited her every day. He walked from his house to the nursing home, fed his wife, and at the end of the day brought home her clothes. At night, he washed and ironed her clothes. Then he walked them up to her room the next morning.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>He did that for three years until her death in 2005.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39617 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/raiders20-e1573279184575.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"441\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>So now, out of the original 80, only four Raiders remain: Dick Cole (Doolittle&#8217;s co-pilot on the Tokyo raid), Robert Hite, Edward Saylor and David Thatcher. All are in their 90s. They have decided that there are too few of them for the public reunions to continue.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\"><strong>The events in Fort Walton Beach marked the end.
