George Braine has written this version of the story very well indeed, and I am pleased to present it to all eLanka readers with a bit of additional information, that perhaps George himself was not aware of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">My brother Ian, a famous Swimmer in Ceylon of the fifties, was chosen to be the &#8220;stand-in&#8221; for William Holden, who starred in&#8221;The Bridge&#8221;, when David Lean &amp; Co., decided that\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">the &#8220;swimming scenes&#8221; (where several swimmers take the plunge to get to the section of bridge where the explosives are placed in order to blow it up), were too much of a risk for William H. to take, and perhaps he wasn&#8217;t a swimmer, anyway. Ian Kelly was not only strong enough, but he was an expert swimmer, even looking like the filmstar,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">\u00a0from the rear angle of that particular &#8220;scene&#8221;. There were several other Sri Lankan friends of ours who secured\u00a0 &#8220;bit-parts&#8221; in the movie. George Braine also tells us about the &#8220;Colonel Bogey&#8221; March, the background music. I am not absolutely certain about it, but the &#8220;Whistling&#8221; of that music was carried out by a Sri Lankan Burgher who is fondly remembered by the nickname &#8220;Whistling Siegertsz&#8221;. His first name, as I remember it, was George. I take this chance, on behalf of eLanka, to say Thank you, George Braine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Thank you for a fascinating story on a very interesting Movie, that actually won many Academy Awards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29898 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Desmond-Kelly-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"178\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Desmond Kelly.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">(Editor -in-Chief). eLanka.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Watching &#8220;The Bridge on the River Kwai&#8221;\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0By GEORGE BRAINE<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42462 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/GEORGE-BRAINE.jpg\" alt=\"GEORGE BRAINE\" width=\"600\" height=\"219\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">In 1958, when we were living in Negombo, my father took my brother and me to watch &#8220;The Bridge on the River Kwai&#8221; at the Asokamala cinema. Asokamala cinema was later renamed Regal, which has since closed down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">&#8220;The Bridge \u2026&#8221; is based on a fictionalized account of the railway line through Thailand to Burma, built under Japanese army supervision, during World War II. About 12,000 Allied prisoners-of-war (POWs) and 100,000 forced labourers died during the railway\u2019s brutal construction, and it earned the nickname &#8220;death railway&#8221;. The movie, filmed entirely in Ceylon, was directed by David Lean, and went on to win seven Academy Awards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Forty years later, when I was living in Hong Kong, my best friends were David and Jennifer, a Canadian couple. One day, to my surprise, I learned that Jennifer had been born in Singapore during the war, where her father, a Major in the British army, was stationed. As the Japanese troops came sweeping down the Malay peninsula, towards Singapore, wives and children of British soldiers and civil servants were evacuated to safer destinations. Jennifer, an infant, and her mother travelled to South Africa, on a British ship named &#8220;Princess of Japan&#8221;. The irony!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42463 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/GEORGE-BRAINE-2.jpg\" alt=\"GEORGE BRAINE\" width=\"400\" height=\"168\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">The British forces in Singapore surrendered to the Japanese in February, 1942, and the Major was sent north to work on the infamous railway. He survived the horrendous conditions, but refused to eat rice for the rest of his life, recalling the miserable gruel he had been fed while working on the railway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42464 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/GEORGE-BRAINE-3.jpg\" alt=\"GEORGE BRAINE\" width=\"500\" height=\"208\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">Jennifer later told me that she had never watched &#8220;The Bridge \u2026&#8221;, because, even seeing a fictionalized version of the suffering her father underwent would be too painful. But, I persuaded her that the movie was a masterpiece worth watching, and she reluctantly agreed. So, Jennifer, David, and I gathered in my living room &#8211; cheese, crackers, and wine at hand &#8211; to watch the DVD. From the moment it started, Jennifer was on the edge of her seat, without a word, the food untouched, for all 160 minutes of the movie. At the end, I saw that her eyes were filled with tears. We never again talked about the movie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">On a visit to Thailand, I went up to Kanchanaburi, where a section of the original bridge still stands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000080;\">The high point of the movie comes at the end, when the wooden railway bridge built by the prisoners, is blown-up, sending the first train plunging to the river below. But, for me, the most memorable scene comes at the beginning, when, led by the proud, chin-up Lieutenant Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), Allied soldiers &#8211; defeated, in frayed, rag tag uniforms &#8211; march into the POW camp whistling &#8220;Colonel Bogey March&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42465 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/GEORGE-BRAINE-4.jpg\" alt=\"GEORGE BRAINE \" width=\"400\" height=\"235\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; &#8220;THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI&#8221; \u2013 By Des Kelly Yet another personalized version of a very famous Movie made in Ceylon.
