The number of overall corona <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">cases globally has passed 116,000, and the number of global deaths has passed <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">4,000.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">However, not everything is bleak: for the first time since the outbreak started, the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">number of new daily cases in China fell below 50.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Sri Lanka, that little island in the Indian Ocean, with a population of over 20 million <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">people, since January till now only 144 cases have proved having the virus. Only <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">three deaths have been notified so far. The third death 72 year old man, occurred as <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">an inpatient being treated at the infectious Disease Hospital in Angod.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Sri Lanka, dubbed as the pearl of the Indian ocean, is a very famous tropical <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">destination among thousands. The island nation ranked as the number 01 tourist <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">destination by lonely planet.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">So, how did they curtail the spread of the virus with such astounding results in a<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">pandemic situation, and that\u2019s what we are going to talk about.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Sri Lankan health system has both public and private health care sectors. The public <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">health system is free for all citizens. Going hand in hand, Sri Lanka has a free <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">education system until graduate school for the last 60 years. Thanks to the free <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">education system.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Talking about myself, I had free education in a government school from the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">kindergarten till I graduated from the Ceylon Medical faculty. Not only that, the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">government sent me to UK. on a scholarship for further studies and fellowship exam.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Aren\u2019t we all lucky to be born in Ceylon, now called Sri Lanka.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Sri Lanka has trained thousands of well-qualified healthcare professionals and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">paramedical workforce for many decades through 9 well regulated and state of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">art medical faculties covering all regions of the country. And, all free of charge. The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">doctors and paramedical staff receive post-graduate training and continuous medical <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">education throughout their career.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Coronavirus threat<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Since the origin of the novel coronavirus in Wuhan Sri Lankan authorities started to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">take vigilance in stopping the potential danger. The military forces and the national <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">intelligence service was put on high alert. The government created specialized <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">aviation and border control expert teams, to track the movement of all inbound <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">tourists and with a potential threat.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">The first detected case of the corona virus infection was on a Chinese woman who <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">arrived in Sri Lanka on the 19th January. Passing through the thermal scanners at <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">the airport, she was confirmed having the coronavirus.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">She was promptly admitted to the infectious disease Hospital in Colombo and was <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">discharged after being fully cured. She was given a mighty welcome, by the Minister <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">of Health visiting the hospital, on the day she was discharged.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">So, Sri Lanka\u2019s first case was well handled and there wasn\u2019t any spread of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">disease at that stage.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">On 3 March 2020, the first reported case involving a Sri Lankan origin outside Sri <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Lanka was reported in Italy. As of 23 March 2020, 45 quarantine centres were <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">opened in the country by the Sri Lanka Army as a preventive measure to tackle the\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">coronavirus pandemic.[11] Nearly 3500 people have been under quarantine in 45 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">quarantine centres which also include 31 foreigners from 14 countries.[12]<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">As of 25th March 2020 Sri Lankan authorities have tracked down over 14000 people <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">who had contacted the identified patients and had ordered self quarantine for such <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">people.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">A 22-member National Action Committee was set up by the ministry to prevent the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">spread of coronavirus in Sri Lanka. The Department of Immigration and Emigration <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">also informed all construction sites with Chinese resident visa holders to restrict their <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Chinese employees to their respective workplaces and lodgings.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">33 Sri Lankan students and families were evacuated from Wuhan on 1 February and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">they were brought back to the country at government expense at Sri Lankan <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">government expense, and kept under Quarantine at a Military facility at Diyatalawa.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">They were released after two weeks quarantine period on 14 February <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Since the first week of March, passengers coming from Italy, Iran, or South Korea <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">have been required to be quarantined for two weeks at one of two facilities. On 10 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">March, 186 people, out of which (164 Sri Lankan nationals, 20 Italian nationals and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">2 South Korean nationals) were placed under quarantine in Batticaloa. On 10 March <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">2020, 2 Sri Lankan origins living in United Arab Emirates reported with coronavirus <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">cases were identified<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">So, you will see that prompt action taken by the government curtailed the spread of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">the infection in that little island.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">From the 12th of March all schools, including private, closed down until April 20 due<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">to the risk of coronavirus spreading in the country <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Military and police personnel have been deployed . islandwide, to maintain law and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">order, to restrict people\u2019s movement to contain the highly contagious virus and also <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">to be alerted on other security threats.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">The curfew currently in force in the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">and Jaffna which have been identified as High Risk Zones in the wake of COVID-19 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">pandemic will be in effect until further notice. In other districts the curfew was lifted <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">on the 1st April for a few hours of the day.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">The public can purchase essential foods and other goods while at home, through a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">government mechanism. Before, the people could visit the supermarkets to purchase<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">their essential goods, and only admitted to the market in batches.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">All train travellers were allowed to travel free during this corona virus outbreak, the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">reason being the tellers at the railway stations were reluctant to handle money from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">the travellers.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">In conclusion, I would like to state that Sri Lanka, though being a developing <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">country, has handled to curtail the spread of the deadly corona virus infection, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">satisfactorily, compared to most developed countries. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">The latest figures are 151 identified cases and 4 deaths.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Well done Sri Lanka.<\/span><br
