LEST WE FORGET – by Victor Melder<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

On Saturday, April 25, 2020, we commemorate \u2018Anzac Day\u2019, when we recall and commemorate<\/span><\/p>\n

the heroic acts of the military servicemen and women, who gave \u2018their yesterday\u2019s, that we may have our<\/span><\/p>\n

today\u2019s\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to the Corona Virus Pandemic and the \u2018Social Distancing\u2019 enforced to halt it\u2019s spread, there will by<\/span><\/p>\n

no \u2018Dawn Service\u2019 or Anzac Marches, Australia wide. Instead, the few surviving service personnel, their<\/span><\/p>\n

family and friends will gather at dawn silently with a lighted candle in their drive ways.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are now also remembering the heroic act of four Victorian Police officers, who were senselessly and<\/span><\/p>\n

tragically mowed down by a speeding truck, whilst in the line of duty, on the evening of Wednesday, April 22.<\/span><\/p>\n

The officers had intercepted a motor vehicle for traffic offences on the Chandler Highway and investigations<\/span><\/p>\n

were continuing in the emergency lane.<\/span><\/p>\n

At this time a truck travelling at an estimated 100kph, veered into the emergency lane, where the police<\/span><\/p>\n

officers were, killing and injuring them. The motor vehicle offender, pulled up earlier, took photos of the<\/span><\/p>\n

carnage and fled the scene.<\/span><\/p>\n

The four police officer, all succumbed to their injuries. This was the worst police tragedy to hit the Victorian<\/span><\/p>\n

Police force in its history..<\/span><\/p>\n

As the parent of a serving member of the Victorian Police force, the tragedy reinforces the inherent danger<\/span><\/p>\n

they are called to face in carrying out their day-to-day duties, in helping keep the community safe.<\/span><\/p>\n

It takes a special breed of person to want to join the police force and serve the community at large. Chief<\/span><\/p>\n

Commissioner Ashton said \u201cCommitting one\u2019s life to serving and protecting others is a truly unique attribute.<\/span><\/p>\n

They do it to protect. They do it to make a difference\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

I recall the words of an elderly person who once said, \u201cIf you don\u2019t like the Police, next time you are in trouble,<\/span><\/p>\n

call a Hippy\u201d !!<\/span><\/p>\n

The senior officer killed, had a 31-year career with the force and was looking forward to retirement, another had<\/span><\/p>\n

six years of service, the third, a year\u2019s service, whilst the most junior officer had passed out of the Police Academy<\/span><\/p>\n

in December last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

We grieve and silently suffer with the family members of the four officers who gave their lives. Their lives<\/span><\/p>\n

will never ever be the same again. The pain will linger on for the rest of their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

We remember and pray for the four officers, as we too grieve for them:<\/span><\/p>\n
