America\u2019s Sri Lankan population is relatively small, accounting for only 6% of the diaspora.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1v8RQe_mXZ3jtm8rjttBAVzkZfjM\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">In Los Angeles, there is no real concentration of Sri Lankan businesses, although most Sri Lankan businesses are located around\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>San Fernando Valley<\/strong>, a highly diverse region where it seems many\u00a0ethnicities not represented by enclaves settle. Within the San Fernando Valley, that presence is particularly felt in the neighborhoods of\u00a0<strong>Reseda<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Tarzana<\/strong>.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>BRIEF HISTORY OF SRI LANKA<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-43893 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/srilanka-skyline-1sl1-558x400.jpg\" alt=\"srilanka-skyline-1sl1\" width=\"558\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Sri Lanka (Sinhalese: \u0dc1\u0dca&#x200d;\u0dbb\u0dd3 \u0dbd\u0d82\u0d9a\u0dcf, Tamil: \u0b87\u0bb2\u0b99\u0bcd\u0b95\u0bc8) is a diverse, island country in\u00a0<strong>South Asia<\/strong>.\u00a0The majority of Sri Lankans belong to the Sinhalese ethnic group and minorities include Tamils,\u00a0<strong>Moors<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Burghers,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Malays<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0Kaffirs<\/strong>, and the indigenous\u00a0<strong>Vedda<\/strong>. Its largest city is\u00a0<strong>Colombo<\/strong>, the population of which is roughly 750,000. Colombo\u2019s metropolitan area is home to roughly 6 million Sri Lankans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-43894 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/vadda-people-in-sri-lanka-473x400.jpg\" alt=\"vadda-people-in-sri-lanka\" width=\"473\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><strong>Veddas, likely the indigenous people of Sri Lanka<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The first<strong>\u00a0Homo sapiens<\/strong>\u00a0are believed to have arrived in Sri Lanka as early as\u00a038,000 years ago.\u00a0According to\u00a0Hindu mythology, a land bridge\u00a0formerly connected\u00a0Sri Lanka to the\u00a0<strong>South Asian<\/strong>\u00a0mainland, which seems plausible. In parts of\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>Palk Strait<\/strong>\u00a0today, the ocean is sometimes only a meter deep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-43895 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/palk-strait-511x400.jpg\" alt=\"palk-strait\" width=\"511\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<strong>Indo-Aryan people<\/strong>\u00a0who make up Sri Lanka\u2019s majority today arrived\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>6th century BCE<\/strong>. Over the centuries which followed, the island was divided into numerous kingdoms. In the 5th century CE,\u00a0<strong>Sigiriya<\/strong>\u00a0was\u00a0selected by\u00a0<strong>King Kasyapa<\/strong>\u00a0as the location of his capital, a site which includes a\u00a0200 meter tall stone column which became onto (and into) which was built\u00a0an ancient city full of frescoes, statuary, gardens, pools, and is today a\u00a0<strong>UNESCO\u00a0World Heritage Site<\/strong>. It\u2019s the most-visited tourist destination in Sri Lanka and in 1982 it was featured prominently in the video for\u00a0<strong>Duran Duran<\/strong>\u2018s \u201c<strong>Save a Prayer<\/strong>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6Uxc9eFcZyM\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">In 1505,\u00a0<strong>Portuguese<\/strong>\u00a0soldier and explorer\u00a0<strong>Louren\u00e7o de Almeida<\/strong>\u00a0arrived on the island. Soon the\u00a0<strong>British<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Dutch<\/strong>\u00a0joined the\u00a0Portuguese in\u00a0controlling parts of the island. The entire island was subjugated and united by the British in 1815. There were rebellions against the British and\u00a0independence was\u00a0finally\u00a0granted in\u00a01948. Up to\u00a0100,000 Sri Lankans were killed during the 26-year conflict. In the years since the end of the war, Sri Lanka\u2019s\u00a0economy has emerged as one of the world\u2019s fastest growing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Sri Lankans today have a life expectancy of\u00a077.9 years, almost the same as Americans.\u00a0Sri Lankans\u00a0enjoy free universal healthcare, free undergraduate university education, and all nine provinces in the country and major cities are connected by heavy rail. SRI LANKAN ASSOCIATIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS Los Angeles\u2019s Sri Lankan community is served by the Sri Lanka America Association of Southern California (founded in 1973 by Jayam Ratnam), the aforementioned Sri Lanka Foundation (founded in 2003 by Walter Jayasinghe), and Lancaster is also home to the Tamil Refugee Relief Org. The website is a curious mishmash of recipes, news, gossip, and provocative photos and videos mostly of Sri Lankan women. SRI LANKAN TEMPLES \" width=\"533\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">70% of Sri Lankans are\u00a0<strong>Buddhists<\/strong>,\u00a0mostly following the<strong>\u00a0Theravada<\/strong>\u00a0school. 13% of Sri Lankans are\u00a0<strong>Hindu<\/strong>, 10% are\u00a0<strong>Muslim<\/strong>\u00a0(mostly\u00a0<strong>Sunni\u00a0<\/strong>who follow the\u00a0<strong>Shafi\u2019i<\/strong>\u00a0school), and 7% are\u00a0<strong>Christian<\/strong>\u00a0(mostly\u00a0<strong>Roman Catholic<\/strong>). Jothipala\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/H._R._Jothipala\">pala<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Neela Wickramasinghe<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Clarence Wijewardene<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Globally, the\u00a0most famous Sri Lankan pop singer is\u00a0<strong>M.I.A.<\/strong>, born\u00a0<b>Mathangi Arulpragasam\u00a0<\/b>in 1975. Although\u00a0raised\u00a0in the London neighborhood of\u00a0Hounslow, M.I.A. was briefly an Angeleno of sorts, when she lived in a palatial home in the affluent\u00a0<strong>Brentwood<\/strong>\u00a0neighborhood. M.I.A. lived with the father of her child and then-fiancee, \u00a0billionaire\u00a0<strong>Seagram\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Warner Music<\/strong>\u00a0heir\u00a0<strong>Ben Bronfman<\/strong>. They split in 2012 and both moved, independently of one another, to\u00a0<strong>Brooklyn<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Sri Lankan musicians and performing artists play in Los Angeles somewhat regularly, usually in small venues.\u00a0In 2015,\u00a0<strong>Sunil Edirisinghe &amp; Neela Wickramasinghe<\/strong>\u00a0played a concert in the\u00a0<strong>San Gabriel Mission Playhouse<\/strong>,\u00a0<em><strong>Ranwan Rayak<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0was performed at\u00a0<strong>Lawndale High School<\/strong>\u00a0(featuring\u00a0<strong>Sabeetha Perera<\/strong>),<strong>\u00a0Marians<\/strong>\u00a0performed at the\u00a0<strong>Pearson Park Amphitheatre<\/strong>\u00a0in Anaheim, and the musical,\u00a0<em><strong>Madhura Gee Sandawa<\/strong><\/em>, was performed at the<strong>\u00a0Senshin Buddhist Temple<\/strong>. The best resource for keeping up with Sri Lankan cultural events that I know of is undoubtedly the Sri Lanka America Association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>SRI LANKAN SPORT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-43902 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/SRI-LANKAN-SPORT-600x342.png\" alt=\"SRI LANKAN SPORT\" width=\"600\" height=\"342\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Although rugby, football, and tennis are popular, cricket is by far the most popular sport amongst Sri Lankans. The\u00a0Sri Lanka national cricket team\u00a0first visited Los Angeles in 1996, when they were lead by all-rounder\u00a0<strong>Arjuna Ranatunga<\/strong>. They played the US and USC teams at the\u00a0<b>Leo Magnus Cricket Complex<\/b>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area\u00a0<\/strong>before going on to win<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0<strong>Cricket World Cup<\/strong>. The cricket grounds in the San Fernando Valley are still regularly used by\u00a0members of the<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Southern California Cricket Association: SCCA, many of the 41 teams of which include a good number of Sri Lankans and other South Asians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>SRI LANKAN\u00a0LITERATURE &amp; MEDIA<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><b>Sri Lankan literature\u00a0<\/b>is dominated by Sinhalese writing, especially in the short story format. There are also traditions, however, of novels, essays, poems, radio dramas, and\u00a0plays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">One of the most prolific Sri Lankan-American writers was\u00a0<b>Ananda Wahihana Palliya<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-adtags-visited=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43903 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Ananda-Wahihana-Palliya.jpg\" alt=\"Ananda Wahihana Palliya\" width=\"168\" height=\"168\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Guruge, a diplomat, scholar, and writer who spent much of his life in Southern California. Guruge was an adjunct professor of Religious Studies at Cal State Fullerton and was the dean of academic affairs at Rosemead\u2018s University of the West (formerly Hsi Lai University). Guruge authored 53 books in Sinhala and English; over 175 research articles on Asian history, Buddhism and education; and in 1989 translated the Mahavamsa into English.
