The numbers they land on are the topics they&#8217;re given. This week he talks to Merrill J. Fernando. After high school, this businessman was one of the first local people in the then British colony of Ceylon to train as a tea-taster in London. At age 58, he launched his own brand of tea, Dilmah, in Australia. He is now 90.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-45909 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Merrill-J.-Fernando.jpg\" alt=\"Merrill J. Did you grow up poor or rich?\u00a0<\/strong>We were an upper-middle-class family, quite comfortable. We had all the things we needed: property, extra land, a few acres of coconut grove.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>What did your family do for work?\u00a0<\/strong>My great-grandparents were ayurvedic physicians. My grandmother treated people for asthma and eye troubles. I remember seeing queues and queues of people watching how she treated people. My father was a small-time businessman, supplying construction companies with bricks, and my mother taught me everything I know now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Responsive --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5123580823957590\" data-ad-slot=\"7875984934\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>What did she teach you specifically?\u00a0<\/strong>She was very particular about looking after poor neighbours. Every time I got something nice \u2013 sweets, chocolates, cakes \u2013 my mother would cut it in two and take half of it to give to the village\u2019s poor children. I used to cry, \u201cYou take your own stuff to them; not mine!\u201d She took no notice. Caring for the neighbours and sharing with the poor has stuck deeply in my mind ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Later in life, you were tasting, trading and learning about tea in London\u2019s Mincing Lane. What did you learn about business and money?\u00a0<\/strong>This was during the period when Sri Lanka was still a British colony. The coloniser\u2019s sole objective of the colonies was for us to produce raw materials: tea, rubber, coconut, steel. Mincing Lane in London was the tea centre of the world, but it\u2019s 19,000 kilometres away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>\u2026\u2009From the actual tea.\u00a0<\/strong>Yes! And when I watched what was happening, I said, \u201cThis cannot be real.\u201d They\u2019d give a farmer 50 cents for a kilo of tea; barely enough to eke out an existence. Then they would mix Ceylon tea with tea from other regions and market it as \u201cCeylon Tea\u201d \u2013 because Ceylon tea is known as the world\u2019s finest \u2013 at 20 or 25 times what they paid the poor farmer! They exploited our tea farmers, their families and workers \u2013 and equally the consumer \u2013 by telling them lies. So 34 years later, I launched Dilmah tea in Australia. But my god, what a hostile reception I had from the industry here!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Responsive --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5123580823957590\" data-ad-slot=\"7875984934\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>How did it manifest?\u00a0<\/strong>Competitors said, \u201cThis is a third-world unhygienic product being dumped here!\u201d The chairman of the then Australian Tea Alliance threatened me. \u201cWe will get your brand out of the supermarket.\u201d But the consumers fell behind me. I owe everything to Australian consumers. Now I bring fresh, single-origin, undiluted tea to Australia and share my earnings with the poor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mjffoundation.org\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.mjffoundation.org\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1592190151311000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEpQqYt3w6yEFmrfTTacHGE8NUpkQ\">through our foundation<\/a>\u00a0[the MJF Charitable Foundation]. And now we have a global brand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>It\u2019s a family business, and your son recently took over as CEO. Is mixing family with business a good idea?\u00a0<\/strong>In our case, it\u2019s the best thing that could ever happen. My son is part of the second generation; the third generation is equally keen and will join the business in the next two years. We have a family charter which says not a single share can be sold outside the family. We have had offers, but our business is not for sale. Never.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">SEX<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>How are Sri Lankan attitudes towards sex different from other countries in which you\u2019ve travelled?\u00a0<\/strong>I don\u2019t think Sri Lankan values are that different from other countries. There is genuine love among some couples; the normal disputes and fights, separations and divorces in others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>You\u2019re 90. What wisdom can you impart for younger people when it comes to love, sex and relationships?\u00a0<\/strong>Love and relationships are sacred to people. If you love a man or a woman, as the case may be, do it wholeheartedly. Don\u2019t be distracted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>What were you told about sex growing up?\u00a0<\/strong>We had village parents; they\u2019d never discuss that. But sex is something that we all experience sometime or other, before marriage, after marriage, sometimes outside marriage. But ultimately, it is something really sacred to the family. If you drift away, you\u2019ll find a casualty somewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Did you ever have to have that awkward conversation with your children about the birds and the bees?\u00a0<\/strong>No, I sent them to a Jesuit boarding school in England at the age of 11!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Are any of your teas an aphrodisiac?\u00a0<\/strong>[<em>Laughs<\/em>] Generally, black tea is considered an aphrodisiac! And the stronger the tea, the stronger the effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">RELIGION<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Sri Lanka is home to many religions. Do you adhere to any of them?\u00a0<\/strong>Christianity. It is the good Lord who led me all the way from the time I was in the little village. He taught me to praise and worship him, and in return, he gives me everything I need and deserve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>How does Christianity inform your daily life?\u00a0<\/strong>When I wake in the morning and I\u2019m seated in bed, I thank Jesus for all the blessings I receive daily. The last thing at night, I thank him the same. I am very conscious that God is guiding me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>Outside of religion, what else do you believe in? What grounds you?\u00a0<\/strong>There\u2019s one thing I believe: do not envy. It\u2019s a small society when that happens. But I find that if you wish everybody well, all the blessings will come from God. Even enemies trying to destroy you can\u2019t touch you. Wish everybody well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\"><strong>What\u2019s the meaning of life?\u00a0<\/strong>Life is an opportunity for you to do good.
