An American Opinion of Australia: by\u00a0<\/strong>David Mason<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

David Mason is a Writer, a Professor, and a Poet Laureate from Colorado, USA<\/span><\/h2>\n

‘There’s a lot to admire about Australia, especially if you’re a visiting <\/span>American,’ says David Mason. ‘More often than you might expect, Australian <\/span>friends patiently listening to me enthuse about their country have said, we <\/span>need outsiders like you to remind us what we have.<\/span><\/p>\n

So here it is – a small presumptuous list of what one foreigner admires in <\/span>Oz.’<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Health care.<\/span><\/p>\n

I know the controversies, but basic national health care is a gift. In America <\/span>, medical expenses are a leading cause of bankruptcy.<\/span><\/p>\n

The drug companies dominate politics and advertising. Obama was being <\/span>crucified for taking halting baby steps towards sanity. You can’t turn on the <\/span>telly without hours of drug advertisements – something I have never yet seen <\/span>here. And your emphasis on prevention – making cigarettes less accessible, for <\/span>one – is a model.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Food.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, we have great food in America too, especially in the big cities. \u00a0But <\/span>your bread is less sweet, your lamb is cheaper, and your supermarket <\/span>vegetables and fruits are fresher than ours.<\/span><\/p>\n

Too often in my country, America , an apple is a ball of pulp as big as your <\/span>face. The dainty Pink Lady apples of Oz are the juiciest I’ve had. And don’t <\/span>get me started on coffee. In American small towns it tastes like water <\/span>flavoured with burnt dirt, but the smallest shop in the smallest town in Oz <\/span>can make a first-rate latte. I love your ubiquitous bakeries, and your<\/span>
\nhot-cross buns. Shall I go on?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

3. Language.<\/span><\/p>\n

How do you do it? The rhyming slang and Aboriginal place names are like magic <\/span>spells. Words that seem vaguely English yet also resemble an argot from <\/span>another planet. I love the way institutional names get turned into diminutives <\/span>– Vinnie’s and Salvos – and absolutely nothing’s sacred.<\/span><\/p>\n

Everything is an opportunity for word games and everyone has a nickname. Lingo <\/span>makes the world go round. It’s the spontaneous wit of the people that tickles <\/span>me most. Late one night at a barbie my new mate Suds remarked: ”Nothing’s the <\/span>same since 24-7.” \u00a0\u00a0Amen to that.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Free-to-air TV.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Oz, you buy a TV, plug it in and watch some of the best programming I’ve <\/span>ever seen – uncensored. In America , you can’t get diddly-squat without paying <\/span>a cable or satellite company heavy fees. In Oz a few channels make it hard to <\/span>choose. In America, you’ve got 400 channels and nothing to watch.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Small shops.<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside the big cities in America corporations have nearly erased them. <\/span>Identical malls with identical restaurants serving inferior food. Except for <\/span>geography, it’s hard to tell one American town from another.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ”take-away” culture here in Australia is wonderful. The human encounters <\/span>are real – people love to stir, and stories get told. The curries here are to <\/span>die for. And you don’t have to tip!<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Free camping.<\/span><\/p>\n

We used to have this too, and I guess it’s still free when you backpack miles <\/span>away from the roads. But I love the fact that in Oz everyone owns the <\/span>shoreline and in many places you can pull up a camper van and stare at the sea <\/span>for weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n

I love the ”primitive” and independent camp-grounds, the life out-of-doors. <\/span>The few idiots who leave their stubbies and rubbish behind in these pristine <\/span>places ought to be transported in chains to the penal colonies.<\/span><\/p>\n

7. Religion.<\/span><\/p>\n

In America , it’s everywhere – especially where it’s not \u00a0supposed to be, like <\/span>politics. \u00a0I imagine you have your Pharisees too, making a big public show <\/span>of devotion, but I have yet to meet one here.<\/span><\/p>\n

8. Roads.<\/span><\/p>\n

Peak hour aside, I’ve found travel on your roads pure heaven. \u00a0\u00a0My country’s <\/span>”Freeways” are crowded, crumbling, insanely knotted with looping overpasses <\/span>– it’s like racing homicidal maniacs on fraying spaghetti!<\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve driven the Hume Highway without stress, and I love the Princes Highway <\/span>when it’s two lanes. \u00a0\u00a0Ninety minutes south of Bateman’s Bay I was sorry to <\/span>see one billboard for a McDonald’s. It’s blocking a lovely paddock view.<\/span>
\nSomeone should remove the MacDonald’s Billboard.<\/span><\/p>\n

9. Real multiculturalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

I know there are tensions, just like anywhere else, but I love the <\/span>distinctiveness of your communities and the way you publicly acknowledge the <\/span>Aboriginal past.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recently, too, I spent quality time with the Melbourne Greeks, and was <\/span>gratified both by their devotion to their own great language and culture and <\/span>their openness to an Afghan lunch.<\/span><\/p>\n

10. Fewer guns.<\/span><\/p>\n

You had Port Arthur in 1996 and got real in response. America replicates such <\/span>massacres several times a year and nothing changes. Why?<\/span><\/p>\n

Our religion of individual rights makes the good of the community an <\/span>impossible dream. Instead of mateship we have ”It’s mine and nobody else’s”. <\/span>\u00a0We talk a great game about freedom, but too often live in fear.<\/span><\/p>\n

There’s more to say – your kaleidoscopic birds, your perfumed bush in <\/span>springtime, your vast beaches. \u00a0These are just a few of the blessings that <\/span>make Australia a rarity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, it’s not paradise – nowhere is – but I love it here. \u00a0No need to <\/span>wave flags like the Americans, and add to the world’s windiness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Just value what you have here in Australia and don’t give it away.<\/span><\/p>\n
