Probably not what you expect from the man who helped usher single-origin tea into Australia when Dilmah launched in 1988.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cWhen I wake in the morning and I\u2019m seated in bed, I thank Jesus for all the blessings I receive daily,\u201d Fernando told Benjamin Law, for Law\u2019s weekly\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/lifestyle\/life-and-relationships\/tea-mogul-merrill-j-fernando-i-owe-everything-to-australian-consumers-20200508-p54r90.html?fbclid=IwAR1-OvcazFfCOwzddWic_xnz1Ojy5Olq9YQveWkXKNH5aHPJAXysCwih2b4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><em>Sydney Morning Herald<\/em><\/a>\u00a0column about taboo topics such as religion, sex, and money.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt is the good Lord who led me all the way from the time I was in the little village.\u201d \u2013 Merill J. Fernando<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThe last thing at night, I thank him the same. I am very conscious that God is guiding me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">As Fernando explained to Law, he has been a Christian from his own origins as one of six children growing up in a Sri Lankan fishing village. \u201cIt is the good Lord who led me all the way from the time I was in the little village.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cHe taught me to praise and worship him, and in return, he gives me everything I need and deserve.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Developing a thirst for the business of tea in the 1950s, Fernando was shocked by existing tea companies not paying liveable wages to farmers \u2013 and selling inferior products as the real cuppa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Responsive --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5123580823957590\" data-ad-slot=\"7875984934\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cI wanted to bring my country\u2019s tea \u2013 the finest in the world \u2013 garden fresh and ethically produced, direct to tea lovers around the world,\u201d explains Fernando on the Dilmah\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dilmah.com.au\/dilmah-tea-company\/founders-message.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">site<\/a>. \u201cI had to compete with giant multinational brands; many said that mine was an impossible dream. But loyal tea drinkers around the world have made my dream a reality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Fernando told Law that he owes \u201ceverything to Australian consumers\u201d for getting behind Dilmah, and helping it springboard into the international tea market. But Fernando evidently is a total tea tycoon who places ultimate thanks in the gracious hands of God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">For when Law asked about what else he believes in outside of religion, the Dilmah founder\u2019s response still is grounded in where Fernando believes goodness flows from: \u201cThere\u2019s one thing I believe: do not envy. It\u2019s a small society when that happens. But I find that if you wish everybody well, all the blessings will come from God. Even enemies trying to destroy you can\u2019t touch you.
