{"id":46623,"date":"2020-07-01T16:34:19","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T16:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/?p=46623"},"modified":"2021-12-20T11:55:35","modified_gmt":"2021-12-20T11:55:35","slug":"the-settlers-by-patrick-ranasinghe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/the-settlers-by-patrick-ranasinghe\/","title":{"rendered":"The Settlers \u2013 by Patrick Ranasinghe"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #c213ed;\"><strong>The Settlers \u2013 by Patrick Ranasinghe \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44398\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/patrick.jpg\" alt=\"patrick\" width=\"400\" height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-46624 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/The-Settlers-EP-Album-e1593618363956.jpg\" alt=\"The Settlers EP Album\" width=\"600\" height=\"395\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The Settlers EP Album<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">It was 1972 and Felix and his wife migrated to Australia.\u00a0 He decided to to start a new life without his music.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t last too long.\u00a0 He &amp; his wife went to a Sri Lanka Dance organised by the ACF (Australia Ceylon Fellowship).\u00a0 He was spotted by Ernie Walker (clarinet &amp; saxophonist) who was playing in the band with Raef Jansz (piano), Ronnie Bartholomeusz (drums \u2013 a former clarinetist).\u00a0 Felix was invited to play a bracket with the band which he reluctantly accepted.\u00a0 A few days later he was contacted by the band to join them.\u00a0 Informing the band that he had no equipment and transport, the band still insisted on his joining them, going to the extent of hiring a bass guitar &amp; amplifier for him.\u00a0 With no transport, he was picked up by Ernie, at a prearranged Railway Station, and dropped off at his home at night. The band had many Sri Lankan dances, wedding etc.\u00a0 Thus the Music Bug had bitten him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Felix decided to revive his music career and picked up an advertisement in the local newspaper calling for a bass guitarist.\u00a0 The first words coming out at the other end of the phone was \u201cHave you got your own equipment and transport\u201d and the answer from Felix was a big NO but with an assurance that he would purchase his own equipment with the monies he got from the first few jobs. Unfortunately, it didn\u2019t seem the right answer.\u00a0 But a few weeks later, this same band leader contacted him for an audition.\u00a0 With no transport, Felix got his brother-in-law, to drive him to the venue.\u00a0 It was about a 20 minute drive.\u00a0 With a successful audition, he was offered the job to play on the weekend.\u00a0 Travel to the venue was via. Tram, 2 trains and a bus with the journey lasting about 2 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">After a few months, the band was contracted to a newly built venue called \u201cThe Swagman\u201d restaurant.\u00a0 This restaurant became the most popular venue in Melbourne with people coming over literally in bus loads.\u00a0 Travel time was much longer, but Felix still insisted on keeping the job.\u00a0 Felix acquired his first bass guitar, which was offered to him by the keyboardist, for $25\/=.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">As time went on, members of the group decided to move on and eventually, Felix\u00a0 was appointed Band Leader.\u00a0 It was a hard task handling new musicians.\u00a0 But as the musicians quit the band, Felix invited his Sri Lankan musicians as in Tyrone Senn (Piano); Ernie Walker (clarinet \u2013 saxophone).\u00a0 Finally \u201cTHE SETTLERS\u201d band became a more settled band with Felix (Bass Guitar \u2013 vocals), Tyrone Senn (Piano &amp; keyboards), Phil Gardner (guitar \u2013 vocals) Ernie Walker (clarinet, saxophone \u2013 vocals); Lorne Campbell (drums) &amp; Louisa Wisseling (vocals).\u00a0 An EP featuring THE SETTLERS was produced, featuring Felix singing SWEET CAROLINE; Phil singing \u2018\u201dMAKE IT WITH YOU\u201d; Louisa singing \u2018NEVER NEVER NEVER\u201d and Ernie with \u201cSTRANGER ON THE SHORE\u201d.\u00a0 Louisa went on to join THE SEEKERS for a short stint replacing Judith Durham.\u00a0 As time went on, Felix was able to get the services of Milroy Passe de Silva (guitar) &amp; Dallas Achilles (Trumpet).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Felix has moved on playing with many bands in Melbourne.\u00a0 After many years playing music, he is now repaying the talent God has given by singing and playing at his local Parish on Sundays.\u00a0 He says he is enjoying his new stint with a choir featuring Sri Lankans, Mauritians &amp; Anglo Indians.\u00a0 At times he has to perform at two masses, in the absence of the bass guitarist.\u00a0 But he says that he still enjoys it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Patrick Ranasinghe<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Settlers \u2013 by Patrick Ranasinghe \u00a0 The Settlers EP Album &nbsp; It was 1972 and Felix and his wife migrated to Australia.\u00a0 He decided to to start a new life without his music.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t last too long.\u00a0 He &amp; his wife went to a Sri Lanka Dance organised by the ACF (Australia Ceylon [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":46624,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"aside","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[20],"tags":[24063],"class_list":{"0":"post-46623","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-aside","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-articles","8":"tag-sri-lankan-dances","9":"post_format-post-format-aside"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.7.1 (Yoast SEO v25.9) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>The Settlers \u2013 by Patrick Ranasinghe<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"It was 1972 and Felix and his wife migrated to Australia.
