\u00a0A really great story, especially for all Lankan\/Aussies, came in today from our mate (pronounced “mite”) in this huge brown Land we now call home. The Mite I am referring to, is none other than Maxie Gerreyn, Ceylonese cartoonist extraordinaire, now resident in Perth.\u00a0 Australian stories such as these, make for very interesting reading, so thank you, Max. I look forward to stories such as this, and feel sure that many thousands of eLanka readers would agree with me on this one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

LENNIE AND GINGER MICK<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

It\u2019s 1932 and Australia is in the grip of the Great Depression.
\nOne in three workers are unemployed.
\nDecrepit shanty towns hug the outskirts of the big cities.
\nA scrawny rabbit caught in a trap will feed a family for a week.
\nCountry roads are filled with broken men walking from one farmhouse to another seeking menial jobs and food.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

On the outskirts of the South Gippsland town of Leongatha, an<\/strong><\/span>
\ninjured farmer lies in bed unable to walk \u2013 or work.<\/strong><\/span>
\nWorld War I hero Captain Leo Tennyson Gwyther is in hospital with a<\/strong><\/span>
\nbroken leg and the family farm is in danger of falling into ruins.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Up steps his son, nine-year-old Lennie.<\/strong><\/span>
\nWith the help of his pony Ginger Mick, Lennie ploughs the farm\u2019s 24<\/strong><\/span>
\npaddocks and keeps the place running until his father can get back<\/strong><\/span>
\non his feet.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How to reward him?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Lennie has been obsessively following one of the biggest engineering<\/strong><\/span>
\nfeats of the era \u2013 the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.<\/strong><\/span>
\nHe wants to attend its opening.<\/strong><\/span>
\nWith great reluctance, his parents agree he can go.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

So Lennie saddles up Ginger Mick, packs a toothbrush, pyjamas,<\/strong><\/span>
\nspare clothes and a water bottle into a sack, and begins the 1000+<\/strong><\/span>
\nkilometer (600+ miles) trek to Sydney.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Alone.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s right.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A nine year old boy riding a pony from the deep south of Victoria to the biggest and roughest city in the nation.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Told you it was a different era.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

No social media.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

No mobile phones.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

But even then it doesn\u2019t take long before word begins to spread about a boy, his horse and their epic trek.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The entire populations of small country towns gather on their outskirts to welcome his arrival.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

He survives bushfires, is attacked by a \u201cvagabond\u201d and endures rain and cold, biting winds.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

When he reaches Canberra he is welcomed by Prime Minister Joseph Lyons, who invites him into Parliament House for tea.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

When he finally arrives in Sydney, more than 10,000 people line the streets to greet him.<\/span><\/strong>
\nHe is besieged by autograph hunters.<\/span><\/strong>
\nHe becomes a key part of the official parade at the bridge\u2019s opening.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n


\n<\/ins><\/p>\n

He and Ginger Mick are invited to make a starring appearance at the Royal Show.<\/span><\/strong>
\nEven Donald Bradman, the biggest celebrity of the Depression era, requests a meeting and gives him a signed cricket bat.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A letter writer to The Sydney Morning Herald at the time gushes that<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u201cjust such an example as provided by a child of nine summers,<\/span><\/strong>
\nLennie Gwyther was, and is, needed to raise the spirit of our people<\/span><\/strong>
\nand to fire our youth and others to do things \u2013 not to talk only.<\/span><\/strong>
\n\u201cThe sturdy pioneer spirit is not dead \u2026 let it be remembered that this little lad, when his father was in hospital, cultivated the farm \u2013 a mere child.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When Lennie leaves Sydney for home a month later, he has become one of the most famous figures in a country craving uplifting news.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Large crowds wave handkerchiefs.<\/span><\/strong>
\nWomen weep and shout \u201cgoodbye\u201d.<\/span><\/strong>
\nAccording to The Sun newspaper, \u201cLennie, being a casual Australian,<\/span><\/strong>
\nswung into the saddle and called \u2018Toodleloo!\u2019\u201d.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

He finally arrives home to a tumultuous reaction in Leongatha.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

He returns to school and soon life for Lennie \u2013 and the country \u2013 returns to normal.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

These days you can find a bronze statue in Leongatha commemorating Lennie and Ginger Mick.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Pony\"<\/p>\n

But Australia has largely forgotten his remarkable feat \u2013 and how he inspired a struggling nation.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Never taught about him in school? Never heard of him before?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Spread the word. We need to remember \u2013 and celebrate \u2013 Lennie Gwyther and his courageous journey.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s a great story.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

God knows we need these stories now, more than ever.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
