It withstood court challenges and invasion attempts, and remains an independent nation to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47852 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Prince-and-his-wife-Princess.jpg\" alt=\"Prince and his wife Princess\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">During the Second World War, the British government built several Fortress islands in the North Sea to defend its coasts from German invaders.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">They were abandoned in the early 1950&#8217;s, and most were pulled down to comply with international law, as the majority had been built illegally in international waters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-47853 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/the-Second-World-War.jpg\" alt=\"the Second World War\" width=\"600\" height=\"387\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">But one of the fortresses, Fort Roughs Tower, was not destroyed. Situated 7 nautical miles from the coast \u2013 double the then 3 mile range of territorial waters \u2013 it was simply abandoned. From a legal point of view, it therefore constituted extra-national territory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><b>A map showing the Principality of Sealand in the North Sea<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47854 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/A-map-showing-the-Principality-of-Sealand-in-the-North-Sea.jpg\" alt=\"A map showing the Principality of Sealand in the North Sea\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">So in 1965, Roy Bates \u2013 a Major in the British army \u2013 and a crew boarded Fort Roughs Tower and began a &#8220;pirate&#8221; station called Radio Essex, in order to bypass the draconian broadcasting restrictions of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47855 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/the-kind-of-music.jpg\" alt=\"the kind of music\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The station broadcast 24 hours a day the kind of music the BBC wouldn&#8217;t play \u2013 the Beatles, the Kinks and Rolling Stones and other popular music of the era.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Roy declared the 120-foot-long steel platform the nation of Sealand. The founding of this country was marked by the raising of a newly designed flag, and in a romantic birthday gesture, Roy bestowed the title of &#8220;Princess Joan&#8221; to his beloved wife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Prince Roy and Princess Joan.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47856 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Prince-Roy-and-Princess-Joan.jpg\" alt=\"Prince Roy and Princess Joan\" width=\"630\" height=\"472\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">It didn&#8217;t take long before the British Government decided they could not have what they described as a possible &#8220;Cuba off the east coast of England&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The British navy were promptly dispatched to destroy all other remaining forts located in international waters. The Bates family looked on as huge explosions filled the sky as helicopters carrying explosives destroyed the other forts around them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>The family on the island in 1978.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47857 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/The-family-on-the-island-in-1978.jpg\" alt=\"The family on the island in 1978\" width=\"600\" height=\"442\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">As the Navy boats passed by Sealand, they shouted &#8220;You\u2019re next!&#8221;. When a government vessel eventually steamed to within fifty feet of Sealand, Bates&#8217; son, Michael, fired warning shots, causing them to retreat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Father and son were summoned to court. But the judge concluded with the first de facto recognition of Sealand, stating:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">This is a swash buckling incident perhaps more akin to the time of Sir Francis Drake, but it is my judgment that the UK courts have no jurisdiction. After their success in court, the Bates family moved to live on Sealand permanently. They created a national flag, stamps, passports, currency with Joan&#8217;s picture on, and came up with a motto \u2014 &#8220;E Mare Libertas&#8221;, or &#8220;From the Sea, Freedom&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>The coins featuring Princess Joan&#8217;s picture.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47858 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/The-coins-featuring-Princess-Joans-picture..jpg\" alt=\"The coins featuring Princess Joan's picture.\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">In 1978, a German businessman hired several mercenaries to capture the platform while Sealand&#8217;s royal family were buying groceries onshore. But Bates hired a helicopter, came down a rope and took back his dominion at gunpoint!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><b><strong>The captured German invaders.<\/strong><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-47859 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/The-captured-German-invaders.jpg\" alt=\"The captured German invaders\" width=\"630\" height=\"472\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Roy died in 2012 at the age of 91, while his wife Joan died in 2016.
