{"id":48027,"date":"2020-07-28T16:40:48","date_gmt":"2020-07-28T16:40:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/?p=48027"},"modified":"2021-12-21T07:56:24","modified_gmt":"2021-12-21T07:56:24","slug":"a-biographical-anecdote-being-a-perera-whats-in-a-name-by-kks-perera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/a-biographical-anecdote-being-a-perera-whats-in-a-name-by-kks-perera\/","title":{"rendered":"A Biographical Anecdote: Being a Perera: \u201cWhat\u2019s in a Name\u2026?\u201d by KKS PERERA"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 28px; color: #993300;\">A Biographical Anecdote: Being a Perera: \u201cWhat\u2019s in a Name\u2026?\u201d by KKS PERERA\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44921\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/KKS-Perera.jpg\" alt=\"KKS Perera\" width=\"300\" height=\"130\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">A reader and a well-known Buddhist scholar mailed a comment in response to my article on a\u00a0 full moon day entitled, \u2018Futility of Abhi-dhamma in the Path of Emancipation\u2019 with a harsh personal attack saying , \u2018You are a skeptic heathenist with a Portuguese name who is trying to \u2026\u2019 \u00a0[sorry, the rest is unprintable, but I referred the dictionary and made a short reply thanking him for upgrading my poor vocabulary]; \u00a0he, however, coaxed me to reminisce down memory lane to mid 1950s, when our teacher, Mrs \u2026 Perera was taking a class on Ceylon history at lower school, St John\u2019s College, Panadura.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cAll Pereras, please raise your hands.\u201d A rather friendly appeal than a command made to the seventh standard in the mixed school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0Five of us responded to her request and among them was Sumana, the only female in the clan of Pereras, who was a distant cousin of mine. It was customary for the class teacher to nominate a girl and a boy to share a common desk and bench. I shared the front row centre desk with Sumana. She was extremely good in her work and occupied the first two places in the merit list, though only one year my senior\u2014 Sumana always \u2018helped\u2019 me in answering at term tests! It was some sixty years ago and being 12 year-olds, we were good friends. The teacher continued,<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u201cThey say, if someone kicks a bush a couple of Pereras will toss-away, how many of you would agree?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The entire class roared with laughter. While we the Perera boys were somewhat bemused, agreed with the saying discomforting the teacher herself, but Sumana, the obstinate girl she was, indifferent to the loud guffaw, answered in the negative. She stunned the class, when she rejoined..,<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u201cTeacher, we Perera girls would never crawl inside a bush.\u201d\u00a0 The pin drop silence embarrassed all other non-Pereras and Pereras, including the writer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cI am delighted that there was one good answer from a Perera,\u201d replied the elated teacher.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">It was when she began her history lesson a few minutes later that we realized she was preparing to\u00a0talk on the role of Miguel Pereira, the Portuguese administrator in the 16th century\u2019s Lisbon rule over Ceylon\u2019s coastal belt, which prompted her to gossip about \u2018Pereras\u2019 in the middle of her history lesson. The name Perera was launched here by the Portuguese along with hosts of other Portuguese names like Silva, Fonseka, Rodrigo, and Fernando, to mention a few.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u2018Perera or Pereira\u2019 is a common name even today in Spain, Portugal, \u00a0Brazil and even in Goa, the overseas territory of \u2018Portuguese India\u2019 which existed for over four centuries until the early 1960s, when it was annexed by India. The name derives from \u2018Pereira\u2019 meaning Pear tree.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">During the evening of my corporate carrier, and in the last lap of working life 12 years ago, once I was assigned to go Katunayake to receive a CEO from one of our Indian principals who owned quite a few Pharmaceutical manufacturing operations in many parts of the world (he was crowned the richest in India in 2014). \u00a0Their country manager in Sri Lanka introduced me to him mentioning my name with emphasis on \u2018Perera\u2019, in addition to other \u2018decorations\u2019. I had a brief chat with him at the lounge before travelling to Colombo separately. \u00a0The next morning at a meeting with our Chairman CEO, he had mentioned,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u201cThat Indian director, who is working for you, a Perera from Goa\u2026\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">So, much so for school and working life blemishes: In retirement, venturing into the interesting but somewhat \u2018hazardous\u2019 endeavour of writing to newspapers; a few years ago I made a suggestion in the-S\/Times, asking \u2018why not introduce a few Tamil verses and sing the National Anthem in both languages?\u2019, to receive some harsh responses from readers, once again a few of them targeting the name Perera. Responses to recent article, \u00a0\u201cWhy Buddhism?, we are a secular State; Give Foremost place to Dhamma only,\u201d attracted the attention of a few \u2018Buddhists\u2019, one of them said, \u201c\u2026Pereras were the people who vandalized temples in the 16th century.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0My generation\u2019s readers would remember, how the now redundant \u2018Independent Newspapers group\u2019 in mid-1970s slander Trotskyite leader Dr N.M Perera, the Finance Minister, in Sirimavo Bandaranaike\u2019s United Front Government by stressing in bold letters \u201cPe-Ray -Raa\u201d (meaning toddy is oozing), criticizing his proposal to allow owners of coconut trees to tap two trees for toddy without obtaining a valid licence. The global economic depression resulted in a sky-rocketing of food prices; the entire sugar quota was imported causing a severe load on nation\u2019s coffers. While a significant section of the population was clamoring for food in the waste bins[remember the 70s?], the \u2018the never-say-die\u2019 factions of party loyalists [a fast disappearing idiotic clan from both camps] walked in procession shouting \u201cSEENI-NETHUVA-TE-BONAVA\u201d, meaning, let\u2019s have tea without sugar, an analogous to a slogan at today\u2019s \u2018Diabetic-Day- Walk\u2019. They say \u2018History repeats itself.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0Dr. NM, the minister, who was coined \u00a0\u2018N\u2019o \u2018M\u2019oney Perera, (Work of smart newspaper men) was forced to introduce the system as an inducement to make jaggery \u00a0as a home industry and lessen the burden on the budget\u2019s sugar component. May be he genuinely expected the house wives to use it for jaggery making; but, what did the husbands do is anybody\u2019s guess!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">However, Independent Newspapers, managed by The Gunasenas, continued their intense denigration not only on the Marxists, but the entire government using a few Sinhala and English journals like Sun, Dawasa and Sawasa, which compelled the UF government of 70-77 to end the drama by sealing their press at Hulftsdorp Hill.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Private print media, in the absence of electronic were never free and fair then [are they now?]. Every government flexed its muscles to restrict them. That was the media freedom in the \u2018good old days\u2019!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">My father, who had qualms about continuing with the name, added another name before Perera to all male siblings, expecting us to drop the \u2018Perera\u2019 somewhere down the line. However, none of the six males was anxious. We all kept on adding dozens of Pereras down to second and third generations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cWhat&#8217;s in a name? That which we call a rose<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nBy any other name would smell as sweet;\u00a0 \u2026<\/strong><strong>.\u201d\u2026\u2026<\/strong>Juliet<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">[Apologies to Shakespeare]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Proud to be a Perera, KKS-<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<u>epilogue<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">In northeastern modern Spain the medieval Principality of Catatonia, a Western language called Catalan was born. Pereira, meaning \u2018pear tree\u2019 is a topographically derived name from Catalan Perera. Louren\u00e7o de Almeida, a Portuguese explorer and military commander made his first voyage to Ceylon in 1505. Since then, the Catalan name \u201cPerera\u201d became a popular surname among both the Buddhist and Catholics. In early 1510, Afonso de Albuquerque conquered Goa in India. The Portuguese \u2018gifted\u2019 the name Pereira to the people there and Tamil Nadu.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color:
