\u201cI DON\u2019T have any hope, because I\u2019ve lost it all. Now I am just one body here, not a soul, because I\u2019m too tired, mentally sick,\u201d says a 39-year-old man in a Brisbane hotel room pleading for freedom.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Raj is a Tamil refugee, a businessman from Sri Lanka who Australia has held in immigration detention for seven years.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

As a political refugee he is afraid to give his full name, and he doesn\u2019t want his parents back home to know what he is going through.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why he avoids being photographed by news outlets or for social media.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no, no \u2026 because I\u2019m too scared for my parents; they don\u2019t want to get any suffering in the future,\u201d he said.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just too scared because I\u2019m homesick, my parents still love me.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just pretend to them that I\u2019m happy here \u2026 They don\u2019t want to know their son is still suffering \u2026 because I suffered for more than three or four years in Sri Lanka during (and after) the civil war.\u201d<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Raj is among more than 120 refugees detained at the Kangaroo Point Central Hotel.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

One of almost 200 men transferred from Papua New Guinea for medical treatment under the now-repealed medevac legislation, he has been there for nine months.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cPhysically I had lots of problems with my stomach and mentally I was also sick, so I\u2019m a Category 1 (patient) and that means it\u2019s a serious physical sickness and I was transferred here for treatment,\u201d he said, speaking by phone from his room at the detention centre.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBecause my condition is serious I received treatment immediately at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, and they did all the tests like colonoscopy, endoscopy, CT scans \u2013 lots of checks, and they found my real problems and they treated me.\u201d<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

But his deterioration continues the longer he is detained.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re kept in one place \u2026 this is not freedom \u2026,\u201d he said.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMentally I\u2019m getting sick every day, because I can\u2019t sleep very well here \u2026 and I\u2019m afraid again I will get the same (health) problems like I had before.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day I am losing my hope, and mentally and physically I\u2019m getting sick again.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m mentally sick because I don\u2019t want to lose my life here \u2026<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just worrying about my future. Seven years is too long \u2013 (I have) no hopes still \u2026\u201d<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Raj said he had refugee status and he had \u201cdone nothing wrong\u201d.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s (the Federal Government\u2019s) plan for my future?\u201d he said.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am a human, I have a sense, I want to live peacefully in the community.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wish to see my parents, I wish to see my siblings.\u201d<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Raj said they were still in Sri Lanka but if he was able to one day resettle somewhere \u201cI can travel to India or somewhere and ask them to come and see me\u201d.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Acting Immigration Minister Alan Tudge, being interviewed recently on ABC TV\u2019s The Insiders about the future of nearly 200 refugees detained in hotels in Brisbane and Melbourne, said they had options to either return to Nauru or to Papua New Guinea.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor some, they\u2019ll have an option to go to the United States \u2026 For those who have been found not to be refugees, of course, they\u2019ve got the option to return to their home country,\u201d Mr Tudge said.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll keep them in the hotels in detention until they exercise one of those options, and that\u2019s what we want them to do.\u201d<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Refugee advocate Rebecca Lim, who has been supporting Raj, said returning to his homeland was not an option.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a refugee so that discussion it\u2019s a moot point really,\u201d she said.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s got refugee status anyway so he should not be forced to return.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s really not an option, despite what Minister Alan Tudge keeps saying, that people have a choice to go back.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve got refugee status so they really should not even be put in a position to consider that.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd, yes, it is unsafe for (Raj) to return because he\u2019s a political refugee.\u201d<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Raj\u2019s application for sponsorship for resettlement in Canada has been approved but there was no telling how long it would take for a visa application to be processed.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s already been one year, and then unfortunately COVID has come about so who knows \u2026,\u201d Ms Lim said.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

She said the refugees at Kangaroo Point and in Melbourne were in limbo and they continued to be locked up.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Minister\u2019s saying now the other option (for them) is to go back to their home country, go back off-shore or go find a third country,\u201d she said.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWell, that\u2019s not a plan so what is the Government\u2019s plan?<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIndefinite detention is not a plan.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWho is the minister who\u2019s going to take responsibility if there\u2019s a custodial death of a man who never recovers?<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Government says the United States is an option so, for those who\u2019ve been denied (settlement) in the US, is it not the Government\u2019s responsibility to find another option?<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCanada is not the Government\u2019s plan; Canada is a community initiative so the Government actually has no plan.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c(The refugees) can\u2019t stay off-shore; they can\u2019t stay in Nauru and PNG; they can\u2019t go home.\u201d<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Raj said the past seven years had \u201cdestroyed my life\u201d.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m mentally sick because I don\u2019t want to lose my life here,\u201d he said.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Supporters on the outside help to encourage him to hope.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDay by day, some people on the outside they give some hope, \u2026 like some friends on the outside they call me and look after me,\u201d Raj said.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey say, \u2018Don\u2019t give up, don\u2019t give up \u2026\u2019<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019m living now \u2013 why I don\u2019t lose my life already, because they are still hoping you have some future in another country, and you will have freedom in another country.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLike, every day they are hoping. That\u2019s why I am living. If not, I already lose my life in PNG.<\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 Please don\u2019t take too much time to keep us in detention, don\u2019t play with our lives.\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n
