Calcium channel blockers<\/span>

Do you know what calcium channel blockers are?<\/span>
\nMost of you may be on a calcium channel blocker, prescribed by your<\/span>
\nfamily physician, without your knowledge, for High Blood Pressure (essential<\/span>
\nhypertension).<\/span><\/p>\n

They are also called calcium antagonists, given for the treatment of a <\/span>variety of conditions, such as high blood pressure, migraine and Raynaud\u2019s <\/span>disease (peripheral arterial spasm). <\/span><\/p>\n

Calcium is required by the heart muscles and other blood vessels for <\/span>efficient contraction movement. So blocking such a mechanism or inhibiting <\/span>transport of calcium into cells will lower the blood pressure and widen blood <\/span>vessels by affecting the muscle cells in the arterial walls, especially those of <\/span>the coronary arteries. <\/span>These calcium antagonists also tend to slow the heart rate which is also <\/span>beneficial in situations where not only the blood pressure but also the heart <\/span>rate needs to be slowed down for efficient muscle contractions and prevent <\/span>premature aging of the muscle cells of the heart. <\/span>By such action, the blood pressure is lowered chest pain (angina) is relieved <\/span>and also corrects irregular heartbeat.<\/span><\/ins><\/p>\n

Some calcium channel blockers are available in short-acting forms and <\/span>other long-acting forms. The quick-acting ones act quickly and the effects <\/span>last only a few hours, while the long-acting medications are slowly released <\/span>to provide a longer-lasting effect.<\/span><\/p>\n

Examples of calcium channel blocking medication available include:<\/span>
\n\u2022 Amlodipine (Norvasc)<\/span>
\n\u2022 Diltiazem (Cardizem)<\/span>
\n\u2022 Felodipine (Plendil)<\/span>
\n\u2022 Isradipine (DynaCirc SR)<\/span>
\n\u2022 Nifedipine (Adalat CC)<\/span>
\n\u2022 Nisoldipine (Sular)<\/span>
\n\u2022 Verapamil ( Calan Verelan<\/span><\/p>\n

These drugs are normally prescribed in combination with other antihypertensive drugs. <\/span>These calcium channel blockers are beneficial to prevent or improve <\/span>symptoms in a variety of conditions, including<\/span>
\n\u2022 High blood pressure<\/span>
\n\u2022 Chest pain due to angina<\/span>
\n\u2022 Migraine headaches<\/span>
\n\u2022 Brain aneurysm complications<\/span>
\n\u2022 Irregular heart beats<\/span>
\n\u2022 Circulatory conditions like Raynaud\u2019s disease<\/span><\/p>\n

Effect on kidneys<\/span><\/strong>
\nStudies suggest that calcium channel blockers do not worsen the progression <\/span>of renal disease but may rather provide benefit when systemic blood <\/span>pressure has been tightly normalized.<\/span><\/p>\n

Side effects of these medications are:<\/span>
\n\u2022 Constipation-(beware of verapamil). Increase your fiber content and<\/span>
\ndrink plenty of water)<\/span>
\n\u2022 Headache-(due to widening of arteries)<\/span>
\n\u2022 Rapid heart rate<\/span>
\n\u2022 Rash<\/span>
\n\u2022 Drowsiness<\/span>
\n\u2022 Flushing- (due to widening and relaxing of arteries)<\/span>
\n\u2022 Nausea<\/span>
\n\u2022 Swelling of legs and feet (pitting edema due to water retention).<\/span>
\nSerious side effects are rare, and it is not wise to stop calcium-channel <\/span><\/strong>blockers without speaking to your doctor. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Most people who take these medications have no side \u2013effects, or only<\/span>
\nminor ones.<\/span><\/p>\n

These channel blockers should not be taken with grapefruit as they can <\/span>reduce your liver\u2019s ability to eliminate calcium channel blockers from your <\/span>body, allowing the medications to build up in your body.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rebound effect<\/span><\/strong>
\nSome people who suddenly stop taking a calcium-channel blocker have a <\/span>‘rebound’ flare up of angina. Therefore, it is best not to stop taking these <\/span>drugs without first consulting a doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Check your blood pressure weekly until it is stable. Early high blood <\/span>pressure has no early signs or symptoms as the body gets accustomed to <\/span>the slow rising of the blood pressure. Most heart attacks and stroke are <\/span>preventable if your blood pressure is taken care of.<\/span><\/p>\n
