Lopez started playing in bands at 15 and in 1958, his group the Big Beats signed with Columbia Records after recording with Buddy Holly producer Norman Petty. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Lopez went solo shortly afterward and signed with King Records, for whom he released a series of unsuccessful singles before leaving the label in 1962. He soon scored a residency at the Los Angeles nightclub PJ\u2019s, where Frank Sinatra saw his show and signed him to his Reprise Records in 1963.<\/p>\n<p>That year, his debut album, \u201cTrini Lopez at PJ\u2019s,\u201d included a cover of \u201cIf I Had a Hammer\u201d that was a global smash, topping the charts in multiple countries and reaching No. 3 in the U.S. Another live album followed, along with more hits over the next several years, including \u201cLemon Tree,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m Comin\u2019 Home, Cindy,\u201d \u201cSally Was a Good Old Girl,\u201d \u201cMichael,\u201d \u201cGonna Get Along Without Ya\u2019 Now\u201d and \u201cThe Bramble Bush Trini Lopez\u2019s pivotal break came after he landed a steady gig with his trio at P.J.\u2019s, a hangout for stars like Frank Sinatra and Steve McQueen.<\/p>\n<p>After catching his show several times, Sinatra sent Don Costa, the key producer for his record label, Reprise, to sign him By then he had branched out into acting, with limited success. His first role, in the 1965 film \u201cMarriage on the Rocks,\u201d a comedy with Sinatra and Deborah Kerr, was a cameo in a nightclub, though a song he performed on the soundtrack, \u201cSinner Man,\u201d reached No. 12 on Billboard\u2019s adult contemporary chart.<\/p>\n<p>He also appeared in the hit 1967 movie \u201cThe Dirty Dozen,\u201d in a role that was meant to be large but that got cut down after Trini Lopez left the shoot before it ended, frustrated by production delays. He had the lead role in \u201cAntonio,\u201d a 1973 movie about a poor Chilean potter who befriends a rich American (Larry Hagman) passing through his village.<\/p>\n<p>Trini Lopez\u2019s success as an international headliner, he would later look back with pride at one particular gig in which he shared the bill, with the Beatles, at the venerable Olympic Theater in Paris. It was just before the Beatles\u2019 American debut, in 1964 \u201cI used to steal the show from them every night!\u201d he told The Classic Rock Music Report. \u201cThe French newspapers would say, \u2018Bravo, Trini Lopez!
