Old Josephians \u2013 wherever in the world they <\/span>turn up \u2013 seem to have a natural affinity for <\/span>each other\u2019s company. It could be the strong <\/span>sense of loyalty which was instilled in us at <\/span>SJC, or it could be that we share some kindred <\/span>spirit which wafted over from the Beira <\/span>Lake and stayed with us. And so, in January
\n<\/span>1989, it was easy to make a few phone calls <\/span>and pass the word around that a \u201cgathering\u201d <\/span>was to take place in Sydney to which all Old <\/span>Joes were invited.<\/span><\/p>\n

This was more or less how a similar function <\/span>was organised in London some 30 years before <\/span>\u2013 to be exact in 1960. The venue was the <\/span>International Catholic Students\u2019 Chaplaincy <\/span>at 41 Holland Park, and the occasion was that <\/span>an old Josephian,\u00a0Victor Santiapillai<\/strong>, had <\/span>just been made the Trade Commissioner for
\n<\/span>Ceylon in the UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was also an opportunity to meet\u00a0Tony Williams\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 who had just competed <\/span>at the Rome Olympics. Among those present <\/span>were:\u00a0Peter Perera, Tony Pulle, Michael <\/strong><\/span>Nainthy, Manthri Anthonypillai, Ranjit <\/strong><\/span>Tillekeratne, Trevor\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Gerald D\u2019Silva, <\/strong><\/span>Gamini Fernando, Ivan Ratnayake,
\n<\/strong><\/span>Michael\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Paul Fernando\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Nihal <\/strong><\/span>Wiratunge.\u00a0<\/strong>This event could well have been <\/span>the very first gathering of old Josephians outside <\/span>of Sri Lanka, and for that matter, past <\/span>students from any school.
\n<\/span>
\nThirty years later, the arrangements were <\/span>slightly different \u2013 we did not have to get <\/span>round our female friends to come early and <\/span>help to cook \u2013 we could afford to bring in <\/span>a caterer \u2013 and who better than Ken and <\/span>Yvonne Ferreira?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There were several other notable differences between London in 1960 <\/span>and Sydney in 1989. In London we were all <\/span>students \u2013 struggling to keep body and soul <\/span>together while managing to keep on top of <\/span>lectures and exams; in Sydney, we were all <\/span>grown men, with careers and salaries put <\/span>away under our slightly rounded belts! In <\/span>London, only Victor had a wife; in Sydney, <\/span>most came with their wives and some even <\/span>had their grown-up kids. In London, they <\/span>all came on the Central Line and got off at <\/span>Holland Park \u2013 in Sydney they came in cars \u2013 <\/span>some very flashy! In London, the lunch cost 3 <\/span>shillings \u2013 in Sydney $15 per head!<\/span><\/p>\n

But there was much that was the same. <\/span>Long lost friends saw each other after many <\/span>years, some old stories were related for <\/span>the umpteenth time, long- forgotten nicknames <\/span>were resurrected (much to the horror <\/span>of the poor victims!). <\/span>The anthem was sung <\/span>with the same gusto <\/span>and (almost) the very
\n<\/span>same high-notes were <\/span>off-key! The drinks <\/span>were perhaps more <\/span>potent and expensive <\/span>than in London \u2013 but <\/span>the spirit in which they were shared was the
\n<\/span>same. And there were the one or two ring-ins <\/span>from our Wellawatte rivals \u2013 in London it <\/span>was Nihal Wiratunge, in Sydney it was\u00a0Noel <\/strong><\/span>Crusz<\/strong>. Noel was fondly greeted by many who <\/span>well remembered his stories about Hollywood, <\/span>Bing Crosby and Linda Christian which were <\/span>related during Religious Knowledge classes <\/span>(whether they were true or not still remains <\/span>a mystery \u2013 like those other mysteries he was <\/span>supposed to be teaching us).<\/span><\/p>\n

In Sydney, we had representatives from a<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

period spanning some 60 years. There were <\/span>the seniors like\u00a0Mano Muttukumaru, John <\/strong><\/span>St. George\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Bede Muller,\u00a0<\/strong>right down <\/span>to the “kollars” who came with their dads. <\/span>The rest of us -\u2013 well, we were proudly in the <\/span>middle, somewhere between 1940 and 1970:
\n<\/span>Lanka\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Palitha Wijesena, Hamilton <\/strong><\/span>Koelmeyer, Malcolm Berenger, Harold <\/strong><\/span>de Sayrah, George Rupesinghe, Trevor <\/strong><\/span>Caspersz, Maurice Raymond, Lester <\/strong><\/span>Caspersz, Michael Berman, Malcolm <\/strong><\/span>Femando, Tom Silva, Ken Ferreira, <\/strong><\/span>Alistair Corner, Emil Van Gramberg, <\/strong><\/span>Cecil Masefield, Errol Graham, Prasanna <\/strong><\/span>Gunewardene, Christopher Payoe, Lalith <\/strong><\/span>Fernando, Herbert Kreltsheim, Anthony <\/strong><\/span>de Silva, Nada Nadarajah, Ranjan Perera, <\/strong><\/span>Rajendra Cooray, Fred de Sousa, Lucian <\/strong><\/span>Wijetunge, Kevin Perera,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Nihal
\n<\/strong><\/span>Samaranayake\u00a0<\/strong>to name a few. My apologies <\/span>to any others that I have missed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lunch over, a few words were spoken to try <\/span>to formalise the group and to meet again, and <\/span>then we all left with more happy memories. <\/span>The final act was the forwarding of the small <\/span>profit derived to the Peter Pillai Scholarship <\/span>Fund in Colombo. This impromptu gathering at <\/span>the Concord Scouts Hall in 1989 was the small <\/span>beginning of our Association in New South <\/span>Wales.<\/span><\/p>\n
