You won\u2019t find him in an inner-city office, looking for legal loopholes to help the rich and wealthy. When he talks to you, he won\u2019t dominate the conversation by speaking loudly or quickly. Instead, with his calm and thoughtful demeanour, he exudes wisdom that\u2019s clearly beyond his years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">These are the qualities which have helped him win Australia\u2019s most prestigious award available to law students \u2013\u00a0<em>Lawyers Weekly<\/em>\u2019s Law Student of the Year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\" style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\"><strong>AT A GLANCE:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\" style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Sanjay Alapakkam of UNSW wins this year\u2019s Lawyers Weekly\u2019s Law Student of the Year Award<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\" style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">He is passionate about social justice, having worked in migration law with asylum seekers and refugees, and as UNSW\u2019s Queer Officer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\" style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">He believes the industry could benefit with increased diversity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">\u201cWhen deciding the award, Lawyers Weekly look at a few different things,\u201d Sanjay told\u00a0<em>Indian Link<\/em>. \u201cAcademic achievement and work experience aside, they also look at what makes you stand out as a law student, including your community involvement and where your passion for law and justice comes from.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49258 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/sanjay-award-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"818\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">READ ALSO:<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indianlink.com.au\/tajinder-kumar-journey-into-the-raaf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">High flying ambition: Tajinder Kumar<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">For Sanjay Alapakkam, it\u2019s clear his passion lies in social justice. With both humility and deft articulation, he glosses over his impressive CV, which includes time working in migration law with asylum seekers and refugees, an article on the law surrounding temporary protection visas published by the UNSW Law Society\u2019s Court of Conscience Journal, and his most recent employment with the Inspector of Custodial Services, ensuring youth detention centres and custodial systems are properly run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">In addition, he is also currently Vice President of the UNSW Law Society, having previously championed the rights and needs of UNSW\u2019s LGBTQ+ law students when he served as the student club\u2019s Queer Officer last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">\u201cI\u2019m motivated by variety,\u201d Sanjay said with enthusiasm. \u201cDoing different things in a day acts as a stimulus for me \u2013 I get to start each day jumping into a new task.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">Though he recognises the huge amount of opportunities available to him in today\u2019s legal industry, he knows it was once not as easy for an LGBTQ+ person of colour to make the same breakthroughs he has.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">\u201cThere\u2019s been a big improvement over the last couple of decades with regards to diversity in the workplace. I think people are starting to value the idea that those with different life experiences have different things to offer, which encourages those who might have been turned off previously. Diverse leadership brings with it fresh perspectives and new ways of looking at things. That value has played a big part in moving this cause forward,\u201d he told\u00a0<em>Indian Link.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Diversity in the legal industry<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49259 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/sanjat-law-ball.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"731\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">\u201cThe first step is encouragement \u2013 mentoring programs are hugely important,\u201d Sanjay replied. \u201cWhen people see others like them in the roles they might like to take on in future, a visceral feeling of motivation develops that is really important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">He added, \u201cIt\u2019s also important not to underestimate yourself based on your personality. Instead, look at your competencies and what you do well. People have been in your shoes before and are happy to tell you what their experiences were like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">\u201cSecond, look at every failure or setback as a learning experience. No matter who you are, you will face setbacks. See it as something to fix for next time, as a learning opportunity. You never know, your future success could be shaped by these setbacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000080;\">\u201cThird, grasp every opportunity you can and have an open mind. I think very few people know it all \u2013 even at the end of their careers. When presented with an opportunity think to yourself, what can I learn? What can it teach me?
