Former Australia captain Lisa Sthalekar is the ninth woman cricketer to reach ICC Hall of Fame. She was only 3 weeks old when her parents adopted her from an orphanage in Pune.<\/span><\/p>\n

New Delhi:\u00a0<\/b>Former Australian cricketer Lisa Sthalekar was\u00a0inducted<\/a>\u00a0into the International Cricket Council\u2019s Hall of Fame last week, for a stellar cricketing career spanning multiple World Cups. She became the\u00a0ninth<\/a>\u00a0woman cricketer \u2014 and the\u00a0fifth\u00a0<\/a>from Australia \u2014 to receive the honour.<\/span><\/p>\n

Indian-born<\/a>\u00a0Sthalekar had begun her journey from an orphanage in Pune.<\/span><\/p>\n

She was just three weeks old when Haren and Sue Sthalekar adopted her from Shreevatsa \u2014 an orphanage attached to Pune\u2019s famous Sassoon Hospital functioning since 1867.\u00a0Established<\/a>\u00a0in 1973, Shreevatsa is involved in developing rehabilitation programmes for orphaned children.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sthalekar, who also served as the Australian team\u2019s captain, credits her father for introducing her to the game.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mumbai-born Haren Sthalekar had a deep interest in the game of cricket, she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy father loved the game and I spent a fair bit of them with him in the backyard. I would\u2019ve been about 8-9 when I fell in love with the game,\u201d she told ThePrint.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her career spanned four World Cup wins, eight Test matches, 125 one-day internationals and 54 internationals in the 20-over format.<\/span><\/p>\n

She continues her work off the field as well, and has ventured into cricketing commentary, coaching and has been an administrator in various cricketing associations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cricketing career<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

Sthalekar\u00a0made her<\/a>\u00a0Women\u2019s National Cricket League (WNCL) debut in the late 1990s, starting out as a specialist bowler. By the early 2000s, she became a frontline batswoman as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

She made her Test debut in 2003 and played her first T20 international in 2005. She was also the\u00a0first woman cricketer<\/a>\u00a0to make 1,000 runs and take 100 wickets in women\u2019s ODIs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was part of a team that had many players that I looked up to,\u201d Sthalekar told ThePrint.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sthalekar set several milestones off the field as well. She was the first woman to be on the Australian Cricketers\u2019 Association board and the Federation of International Cricketers\u2019 Associations.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the ICC\u2019s decision to honour her, she said, \u201cI was surprised and I felt that I was certainly still quite young having retired only a few years ago. I felt that there are probably other female players who are more deserving of this but obviously feel very humbled.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI hope that after the pandemic the level of women\u2019s cricket soars to new heights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
