\/>\nthe\u00a0 bottom half of the planet.\u00a0 It is recognizable from\u00a0orbit because<br \/>\nof many unusual features, including\u00a0what at first looks like an<br \/>\nenormous bite taken out\u00a0 of its southern edge; a wall of sheer cliffs<br \/>\nwhich\u00a0plunge into the girting sea.\u00a0 Geologists assure us\u00a0that this is<br \/>\nsimply an accident of geomorphology, but\u00a0they still call it the &#8220;Great<br \/>\nAustralian Bight&#8221;,\u00a0 proving that not only are they covering up a\u00a0more<br \/>\nFrightening theory but they can&#8217;t the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">place.\u00a0 Where\u00a0other landmasses and sovereign lands are classified\u00a0as<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">continent, island or country, Australia is\u00a0considered all three.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Typically, it is unique in\u00a0this.<span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/span><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><br \/>\nThe second confusing thing\u00a0 about Australia is the animals.\u00a0 They can<\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">be<br \/>\ndivided into three categories: Poisonous, Odd, and\u00a0Sheep.\u00a0 It is true<br \/>\nthat of the 10 most poisonous\u00a0 arachnids on the planet, Australia has 9<br \/>\nof them.\u00a0 Actually, it would be more accurate to say that of the 9\u00a0most<br \/>\npoisonous arachnids, Australia has all of them.\u00a0 However, there are few<br \/>\nsnakes, possibly because the\u00a0spiders have killed them all.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">But even the\u00a0 spiders won&#8217;t go near the sea.\u00a0 Any visitors should\u00a0be<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">careful to check inside boots (before putting them\u00a0 on), under toilet<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">seats (before sitting down) and\u00a0generally everywhere else.\u00a0 A stick is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">very\u00a0useful for this task.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The last confusing thing\u00a0about Australia is the inhabitants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">A short\u00a0 history: Sometime around 40,000 years ago some people\u00a0arrived<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">in boats from the north.\u00a0 They ate all\u00a0the available food, and a lot of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">them died.\u00a0 The\u00a0ones who survived learned respect for the balance\u00a0of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">nature, man&#8217;s proper place in the scheme of\u00a0things, and spiders.\u00a0 They<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">settled in and spent\u00a0a lot of the intervening time making up\u00a0strange<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">stories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Responsive --><br \/>\n<ins north.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">More\u00a0 accurately, European convicts were sent, with a few\u00a0deranged<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">people in charge.\u00a0 They tried to plant\u00a0their crops in autumn (failing<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">to take account of the\u00a0reversal of the seasons), ate all their food,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">and a\u00a0lot of them died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">About then the sheep arrived,\u00a0 and have been treasured ever since.\u00a0 It<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">is\u00a0interesting to note here that the Europeans always\u00a0consider<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">themselves vastly superior to any other race\u00a0they encounter, since<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">they can lie, cheat, steal and\u00a0 litigate (marks of a civilized culture<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">they say),\u00a0 whereas all the Aboriginals can do is happily survive\u00a0being<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">left in the middle of a vast red-hot desert,\u00a0equipped with a stick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Eventually, the new lot of\u00a0people stopped being Europeans on &#8216;extended<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">holiday&#8217;\u00a0 and became Australians.\u00a0 The changes are subtle,\u00a0 but deep,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">caused by the mind-stretching expanses of\u00a0nothingness and eerie quiet,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">where a person can sit\u00a0perfectly still and look deep inside themselves<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">to\u00a0 the core of their essence, their reasons for being, and\u00a0the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">necessity of checking inside their boots every\u00a0morning for fatal<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">surprises.\u00a0 They also picked\u00a0up the most finely tuned sense of irony in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">the world,\u00a0 and the Aboriginal gift for making up stories.\u00a0 Be\u00a0warned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Responsive --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">There is also the matter of the\u00a0beaches.\u00a0 Australian beaches are simply<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">the\u00a0nicest and best in the world, although anyone actually\u00a0venturing<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">into the sea will have to contend with\u00a0sharks, stinging jellyfish,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">stonefish (a fish which\u00a0sits on the bottom of the sea, pretends to be<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">a rock\u00a0and has venomous barbs sticking out of its back that\u00a0will kill<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">just from the pain) and surfboarders.\u00a0\u00a0 However, watching a beach sunset<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">is worth the\u00a0risk.<span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">As a result of all this\u00a0 hardship, dirt, thirst and wombats, you would<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">expect\u00a0 Australians to be a dour lot.\u00a0 Instead, they are\u00a0genial, jolly,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">cheerful and always willing to share a\u00a0kind word with a stranger.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Faced with insurmountable\u00a0odds and impossible problems, they smile<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">disarmingly\u00a0and look for a stick.\u00a0 Major engineering feats have\u00a0been<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">performed with sheets of corrugated iron, string\u00a0and mud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Alone of all the races on earth, they\u00a0seem to be free from the &#8216;Grass<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">is greener on the\u00a0other side of the fence&#8217; syndrome, and\u00a0roundly<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">proclaim that Australia is, in fact, the\u00a0 other side of that fence.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">They call the land &#8220;Oz&#8221; or\u00a0 &#8220;Godzone&#8221; (a verbal contraction of &#8220;God&#8217;s<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Own\u00a0Country&#8221;). THE IRRITATING THING ABOUT THIS IS THEY MAY\u00a0BE RIGHT.<span lang=\"EN-GB\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">TIPS TO SURVIVING\u00a0AUSTRALIA<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Don&#8217;t ever put your hand down a hole\u00a0for any reason WHATSOEVER.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The beer is stronger\u00a0than you think, regardless of how strong you<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">think it\u00a0is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Always carry a stick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Air-conditioning\u00a0is imperative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Do not attempt to use Australian\u00a0slang unless you are a trained<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">linguist and extremely\u00a0good in a fist fight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Wear thick\u00a0socks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Take good maps.\u00a0 Stopping to ask\u00a0directions only works when there are<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">people\u00a0nearby<b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">.<\/span><\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">If you leave the urban areas, carry\u00a0several litres of water with you<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">at all times, or you\u00a0will die.\u00a0 And don&#8217;t forget a stick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Even in\u00a0the most embellished stories told by Australians, there\u00a0is<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">always a core of truth that it is unwise to\u00a0ignore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">HOW TO IDENTIFY AUSTRALIANS<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">They\u00a0waddle when they walk due to the 53 expired petrol\u00a0discount<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">vouchers stuffed in their wallet or\u00a0purse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">They pronounce Melbourne as\u00a0&#8220;Mel-bin&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">They think it makes perfect sense to\u00a0decorate highways with large<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">fibreglass bananas,\u00a0 prawns and sheep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Responsive --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5123580823957590\" data-ad-slot=\"7875984934\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">They think &#8220;Woolloomooloo&#8221;
