Their five-step plan from 2017 to 2022 is just so far wrong as to where they are going.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThey wanted to be the No. 1 sport in Victoria. Well, that is not happening after AFL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThey wanted to make permanent Australian players. Well, we haven\u2019t got one decent player in the Australian team except for Aaron Finch, who is the captain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThe way the administration has looked after things is poor. They did budget costs of $2 million last year, and the Victorian team had no pre-season tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThe 18 premier clubs are supposed to produce all these permanent Australian players. It is so weak. It is just awful the way it has been played.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cEvery past player Merv Hughes, Shane Warne, Darren Berry, Damien Fleming, Simon O\u2019Donnell left Cricket Victoria with some sort of axe to grind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cNo past players have been involved in any coaching spots. Just bowl five overs in this trial match\u2019,\u201d Jones said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t bowl off the long run-up; he\u2019d bowl off three steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cWhen I went upstairs at the end of the day\u2019s play of the second XI match, all the selectors said, \u2018No, he\u2019s done, we can\u2019t pick him\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cSo we called him up to the room. We sat down, and I said, \u2018Merv, how do you feel?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cHe said, \u2018I told you Deano, I was right. I\u2019ll be OK for Tasmania for next week.\u2019 And then the selectors looked at me and said, \u2018It\u2019s up to you Deano. You do whatever you think is right\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cI looked at him and said, \u2018Sorry, you\u2019re not ready\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Jones loved the game, and was a passionate state captain. But he conceded that fierce determination cost him a lifelong friendship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIn hindsight, if I had the chance again, I\u2019d play him. The game isn\u2019t just about winning all the time,\u201d Jones said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cWe went to war together. If he didn\u2019t hang around with me in Adelaide, I never would have got a 200. He got hit 45 times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cHe was also at the end of his career as well; he was fighting those demons, and you\u2019re a different person when you\u2019re, \u2018What do I do next?\u2019 We didn\u2019t know what we were going to do next in life after that, so we didn\u2019t have much organised. It was a difficult time.<\/span><\/p>\n<article id=\"story\">\n<div class=\"story-content\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cWe\u2019re nowhere near as close as we used to be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Arjuna Ranatunga on Dean Jones<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">I don\u2019t think I have got too many friends in Australia but last week I<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">lost a dear one \u2013 Dean Jones. Don\u2019t get me wrong, he was one of fiercest<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">competitors that I have come across playing two decades of Test cricket but<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">off the field he was very friendly, unassuming and good natured guy.*<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">We were contemporaries. He was two years older than me and made his Test<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">debut two years after me.*<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">*People tend to measure the greatness of a player by judging whether he had<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">done well in places like Australia or England. Well, that is up for debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">In that case, I reckon, we have to also see how players from England and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0Australia fared in places like India. That is why Dean Jones is such a<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Responsive --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-5123580823957590\" data-ad-slot=\"7875984934\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script>\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0special player. I am never one to read too much into numbers but I am told<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0that Deano averaged something like 92 in India and that is a stat that any<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0player, especially those from England and Australia can be proud of.*<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">*He was also a thorn in our flesh always making runs against us. Deano\u2019s<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Test average of 60 and ODI average of 109 against us would tell you the story.*<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">*Deano was a very good analyst of the game. He understood complex<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">situations and how to counter them. He was certainly a trend setter and<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">there was much that we could learn from his game. His running between the<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">wickets stood out and you had to be on your toes when he was out in the<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">middle. His fielding was exciting as well and he brought in so much energy<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">to the side.
