MAXWELL REGINALD CRAGGS \u2013 By Victor Melder<\/span><\/h1>\n

My\u00a0 association with Max goes back seventy years when we were mere striplings,<\/span><\/p>\n

what brought us in contact,\u00a0was not only that we were sons of engine drivers but<\/span><\/p>\n

that we also shared a mutual Uncle and Aunt.<\/span><\/p>\n

We met now and then, as Max lived in Colombo and I lived upcountry, as such it<\/span><\/p>\n

was at family gatherings and other occasions.<\/span><\/p>\n

We were both then in the intake of Special Apprentice Drivers (Batch of 1956) for<\/span><\/p>\n

the Ceylon Government Railways, and there began our close association as apprentices<\/span><\/p>\n

and later engine drivers ourselves, following in our Fathers\u2019 footsteps.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The hard yards of being a railway apprentice were ameliorated with Max sharing the<\/span><\/p>\n

days tasks, always with a laugh and joke. Those tedious days soon passed on and we<\/span><\/p>\n

were on the footplate of a steam locomotive, travelling the length and breadth of the<\/span><\/p>\n

island and catching up in out station towns.<\/span><\/p>\n

What fun we had, sea baths, movies, exploring every town we booked off after duty<\/span><\/p>\n

and the rich feasts we enjoyed whilst dining out.<\/span><\/p>\n

We were trained on both steam and diesel locomotives and then appointed engine drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Max was always concerned of the welfare of his fellow batch mates and helped in every way<\/span><\/p>\n

possible. Be it drafting a memorandum or visiting anyone sick.<\/span><\/p>\n

Within a few years of being appointed engine drivers, we both resigned our position of<\/span><\/p>\n

engine drivers and emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. Max, Eileeen and family in late<\/span><\/p>\n

1967 and myself, June and Family in early 1968.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We endeavoured to keep in touch as often as we could and Max continued his charism of<\/span><\/p>\n

being everybody\u2019s help. Many a time in our household, when problems arose, the catch<\/span><\/p>\n

cry became \u201cget Max\u201d. This catch cry was on the lips of everyone who knew Max, as he<\/span><\/p>\n

was at his best when helping someone.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the progress of time and ageing, Max suffered kidney problems and was on dialysis<\/span><\/p>\n

for some years, even though in pain and much discomfort he would endeavour to joke<\/span><\/p>\n

about the vicissitudes of life, when we\u00a0were in\u00a0 touch by phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

I will miss Max, especially more so on every September 1, his birthday when I would call<\/span><\/p>\n

him and exchange pleasantries and good wishes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Good bye Max, you would certainly be missed, we shall meet again in the great railroad in<\/span><\/p>\n

the sky.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
