It opened up new ground in its portrayal of the sexual awakening of a young boy Arjie (portrayed as a small child by Arush Nand and as a teenager by Brandon Ingram). It is said that Arjie is a semi-autobiographical representation of Selvadurai himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThe book\u201d observes Mehta, \u201cis over 25 years old, but I thought it was completely relevant, and perhaps more relevant today than it was even 25 years ago,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Funny Boy\u00a0<\/strong>was shot on location in Sri Lanka and is set during the time that political and racial tensions between the majority Sinhalaese and minority Tamils were simmering \u2013 and just beginning to escalate and erupt into the racial riots of July 1983. The consequence of this violence led to Sri Lanka\u2019s bloody 26-year civil war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The film delivers powerful performances by a cast including Ingram,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0361846\/\">Nimmi Harasgama<\/a>, Ali Kazmi, Agam Darshi,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seema_Biswas\">Seema Biswas<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/sanjivawijesinha.com\/2019\/11\/30\/shivantha-wijesinhas-latest-movie-role-deepa-mehtas-funny-boy\/\">Shivantha Wijesinha<\/a>\u00a0and Rehan Mudannayake. The musical score is by three-time Oscar winner Howard Shore and cinematography was by Douglas Koch \u2013 while the film, edited by Teresa Font, was produced by Deepa Mehta\u2019s husband and long-time creative partner\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hamiltonmehta.com\/about-1\">David Hamilton<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">At its heart,\u00a0<strong>Funny Boy<\/strong>\u00a0is a personal story about a young man coming to terms with his gay identity in what still is largely a hetero-normative society, but the film also presents a nuanced portrayal of the bitter conflict between the Sinhalese and Tamils. \u201cIt\u2019s too easy to make somebody totally bad, or somebody totally good\u201d observes Mehta. \u201cLife is far more complicated than that and anyone affected in any civil war of any kind is actually a victim.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">When asked the question as to the reason for stories out of Sri Lanka rarely entering the mainstream or even the arthouse festival circuit, Mehta says preconceptions about Western tastes prevent some art films from even getting off the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThere\u2019s this sense that if the film isn\u2019t French enough, or German enough, then it\u2019s not going to be accepted,\u201d says Mehta. \u201cIt won\u2019t get into Cannes; it won\u2019t get into Sundance. It has to be a particular kind of gaze, which is a white gaze.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Mehta was not originally intending to release\u00a0<strong>Funny Boy<\/strong>\u00a0on Netflix. \u201cThe film\u201d she says philosophically, \u201cwas made for cinemas. It was initially planned to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, play the festival circuit and then receive a theatrical release \u2013 but the COVID pandemic put paid to those plans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cWhen DuVernay rang up\u201d, says Mehta \u201cit was like a marriage made in heaven.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cFunny Boy\u201d will debut on Netflix in the U.S., U.K., New Zealand and Australia on Dec. 10.
