At a time in 2020 when sporadic jihadist assassinations in France and Australia in 2020 have reminded us forcefully of the recurring phenomenon of the force of Allahu Akbar in the Middle East as well as such outposts as Sri Lanka (witness the 21\/4 strikes in 2019)<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/thuppahis.com\/2020\/11\/16\/enthusiasm-for-war-australians-in-the-1910s-and-jihadists-in-the-2010s\/#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[3]<\/a>\u00a0as well as Australia (see below).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Let me stir the pot by bringing both sets of enthusiasm into juxtaposition within the framework of a title I used way back in time: namely,\u00a0<strong>THE WILL TO WAR<\/strong>. In Australia and Europe in 1914 and the following years that drive, that enthusiasm, was legitimate. Among Muslims today driven by Wahhabi (Salafi) ideology the endeavour to lie at Akbar\u2019s feet by striking some blow for their cause (however defined) is legitimate.<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/thuppahis.com\/2020\/11\/16\/enthusiasm-for-war-australians-in-the-1910s-and-jihadists-in-the-2010s\/#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\"><strong>[4]<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0In this essay I resurrect the idiosyncratic tales of Australian Muslims who ventured on such paths by repeating segments from a previous essay on the topic in the Library of Social Science.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Brief Juxtapositions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt was an adventure,\u201d said an old Australian soldier to the camera during a TV sequence retelling tales of enlistment for war in the course of the massive media coverage leading up to Anzac day on 25th April 2015\u2014100 years after the disastrous Australian participation in Allied operations against Turkey at Gallipoli.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cAre you a terrorist?\u201d asked the film-maker in the course of a relaxed interview with an Algerian migrant from Britain netted by the police in Frankfurt\u2014 before he and his colleagues embarked on\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strasbourg_Cathedral_bombing_plot\">a bomb-planting operation<\/a>at the\u00a0<em>Christkindelsm\u00e4rik\u00a0<\/em>beside Strasbourg Cathedral in 2000. \u201cNo, I am a\u00a0<em>mujahid<\/em>\u201d said the young man quietly in firm denial.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Enlistment for War: Australian Visions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">One of the vignettes above highlights a thread in the motives that prompted Australian males to enlist in the Australian forces committed to support Britain in the First World War in 1914. One can surmise that some teenagers who bumped up their age in order to join the brigades\u2014were inspired by a spirit of reckless adventure as they embarked on this deadly pursuit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Such motifs were paraded in the media coverage in print, TV, You Tube and internet exchanges that consumed the Aussie peoples in the days leading up to 25th April 2015, Anzac Day in its one-hundredth reckoning \u2014 the day deemed to be the mark of Australian nationhood, and Australia\u2019s National Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52964 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/AUSSIES-TO-WAR-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"251\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Why?\u00a0<strong>Because the historical record demonstrates that the Australians went to war in support of Britain\u2014 to display their \u201cmanhood\u201d by proving their worth in the baptism of fire<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u201c<\/strong>Australia was a young nation [keen] to prove itself in a world where baptism by blood was a national ritual\u201d (Paul Kelly, 2015).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Muscular Christianity was one of the background themes in both Britain and Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries<\/strong>. Self-reliant manliness was a virtue for both individual and collective. Some 417,000 men, thus \u201cover half of the eligible white male population [of Australia], enlisted\u201d in the Australian Imperial Force, the umbrella term encompassing its different services (Kelly 2015). They were all volunteers and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naa.gov.au\/collection\/fact-sheets\/fs161.aspx\">the referendums on conscription<\/a>\u00a0in October 1916 and December 1917 were defeated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52965 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/AUSSIES-TO-WAR-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Australian Tales \u2026 2010s\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">In an ironic twist, however, in the months leading up to 25th April 2015, Australian media waves had also been bombarded with reportage<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">relating to young Aussie males of Muslim background heading off to enlist with ISIS or Al Qaida forces in their insurgencies in Syria and Iraq;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">about official seizures of passports and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.naa.gov.au\/collection\/fact-sheets\/fs161.aspx\">the blocking of specific individuals at airports<\/a>\u00a0as they attempted to proceed abroad for this purpose;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">on the arrests in April 2015 of three young men in Melbourne\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/in-depth\/terror\/two-held-as-melbourne-terror-attack-thwarted-by-asio\/story-fnpdbcmu-1227347668325\">deemed to be readying themselves for symbolic terrorist attacks<\/a>\u00a0during the Anzac events (in the manner of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston_Marathon_bombings\">Tsarnaev brothers<\/a>\u00a0at the Boston Marathon).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">These events followed a series of scares in late 2014. Several raids in September 2014 netted a few suspects in Australian cities deemed to be plotting attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The deaths arising from the lone wolf hostage crisis activated\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/australasia\/sydney-lindt-cafe-siege-three-dead-including-gunman-man-haron-monis-and-two-hostages-after-australian-commandos-storm-building-9927024.html\">at the Lindt caf\u00e9 in Martin Place, Sydney<\/a>\u00a0in December 2014 by Man Haron Monis, a man with a long history of manipulative litigation and psychotic tendencies, only deepened Australian concerns. He ordered some hostages to hold up a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Standard\">traditional Islamic black flag<\/a>, with the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shahada\"><em>shah\u0101dah<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in white Arabic letters (an Islamic\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creed\">creed<\/a>\u00a0declaring: \u201cThere is no God but\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Allah\">Allah<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad\">Muhammad<\/a>\u00a0is the messenger of God\u201d), in the window of the caf\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>A Challenging Question<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Placed within this backdrop, the issue I raise for Australian reflection is this: were not, are not,\u00a0<strong>some\u00a0<\/strong>of these young Muslim men moved like the Anzacs by a similar spirit of reckless adventure in support of what they see as a worthy cause? \u2026leavened and founded upon a patriotic commitment to their community \u2014 namely the Islamic<em>\u00a0Ummah<\/em>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Yes, they are Australian citizens. Yes, such forces as ISIS are murderous, horrid, thuggish forces. But I am asking readers to move beyond these motifs to comprehend the thinking of these men (and occasionally women). While nourished in Australia, some of these personnel may have been dual citizens; and, where they were not holding two passports, their hearts were Lebanese Muslim or Bosnian Muslim or Arabian Muslim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Their commitment was\/is towards the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ummah\"><em>ummat al-Islamiyah<\/em><\/a>\u00a0or<em>\u00a0Ummah<\/em>, namely, the collective community of Islamic peoples. Their patriotism and dedication was and is to the\u00a0<em>Ummah\u2014<\/em>\u00a0especially the\u00a0<em>Ummah\u00a0<\/em>represented by contemporary forms of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salafi_movement\"><em>Salafi<\/em>\u00a0ideology<\/a>\u00a0propagated by, and embodied in, ISIS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">By adopting the title of \u201cCaliphate,\u201d the ISIS insurgency secured the commanding heights of the Islamic world.\u00a0<strong>That title is a master stroke that encourages the faithful to think that here, now, and today, they have an agency that will restore the imbalances in the world order by challenging the condition of\u00a0<em>Jaliyah<\/em>\u00a0enshrined in the West\u2014and raising the Islamic dispensation to the position of ethical supremacy.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The concept\u00a0<em>Jaliyah\u00a0<\/em>is a telling weapon\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jahiliyyah\">referring to<\/a>\u00a0\u201cignorance of divine guidance\u201d associated with the condition of primitivism in which the Arabs lived prior to the revelations of the Quran to Prophet Mohammed. It is a condemnatory description of USA in particular, and the West in general, presented by the Egyptian intellectual\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sayyid_Qutb\">Sayyid Qutb<\/a>\u00a0(1906-66) on the basis of his experiences in America between 1948 and 1950. Qutb\u2019s writings are widely associated with the thinking that drives leaders of Al Qaida and ISIS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52966 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Sayyid_Qutb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Moving on<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">So, we see two visions of commitment to a just war in two different contexts.\u00a0<strong>These brief \u2018takes,\u2019 of course, simplify.<\/strong>\u00a0The motivations to enlist in a war or insurgency usually involves several inspirations and encompasses many threads. One must be alive to cultural nuances within each nation state or nation-state-in-the-making.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The Australian public of 2015 was exposed to many threads spurring men and women to volunteer for military service in 1914\/15. The spirit of adventure motivating individuals was matched by the sense of duty and spirit of patriotism. Both volunteer fighters and Australian statesmen of that day were determined to prove to their British kith and kin that they were a nation of people equal to the task of serving a just cause. \u201cPatriotism\u201d\u2014 to the Australian community-become-Federation (1900)\u2014was an overwhelming theme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Likewise \u2014 but also with attention to different cultural variations \u2014 we would do well to reflect upon three other instances of dedication to sacrifice in war-for-cause:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">(A)\u00a0<strong>the Japanese who volunteered to fight for their state in the 1930s and 1940s<\/strong>\u00a0and took the further step of becoming\u00a0<em>kamikaze<\/em>\u00a0pilots or\u00a0<em>kamikaze<\/em>\u00a0submariners;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">(B) the Palestinian and other Islamic men and women who have committed themselves to suicide missions of assassination or bombing attack in step with the outstanding example of the truck bomb attacks on US and French army barracks in Beirut on 23rd October 1983 by a group calling itself \u201cIslamic Jihad\u201d \u2014 blasts that killed 254 American servicemen and 58 French;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">(C) the LTTE\u2019s adoption of the example set in 1974 by Ponnudurai Sivakum\u0101ran in swallowing cyanide when faced with capture after a botched assassination attempt\u2014as a model of dedication enjoined upon every trained fighter in their cause of\u00a0<em>Thamil\u012blam<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>The Australian Jihadists<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">It is in the light of these comparative excursions that I ask [readers] to address the instances of Muslim Australians who have recently joined the Islamic insurgencies in the Middle East (see the striking pictorial\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/news\/photos-e6frg8zf-1227149129835%3Fpage%3D1\">list<\/a>\u00a0prepared by\u00a0<em>The Australian<\/em>). As we know only too well, such individuals as Mohammad Ali Baryalei, Neil Prakash aka Abu Khalid al Cambodi and Abu Nour al-Iraq,\u00a0<strong>have extended their reach backwards and worldwide: using social media and video to exhort like-minded faithful to strike a violent blow for Islamic jihad within the metropolitan heartlands of Australia<\/strong>.\u00a0This is \u201cleaderless remote-control terror \u201c\u2013 incendiary inspirations that can initiate individual or small unit strikes by committed activists anywhere (Kilcullen 2014).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52967 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Neil-Prakash.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"413\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Abdul Numan Haider\u2019s repeated stabbing of a police officer outside a police station at Melbourne in September 2014 was one instance where an actual act of \u201cterror\u201d occurred; but authorities insist that several others have been nipped in the bud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">It is likely that many Australians regard these Muslim personnel as \u201cfanatics\u201d or \u201cterrorists\u201d beyond the pale, just mindless killers. This is too facile.\u00a0<strong>My goal is directed towards consciousness-raising<\/strong>.\u00a0I do so here by aligning the dedication of these Aussie jihadists in with that displayed by the Anzacs. Reckless adventurism and commitment to a just cause were among the inspirations stimulating both sets of warriors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The community that the jihadists are serving, of course, is different. As vitally \u2014 and fearfully \u2014 their\u00a0<em>Ummah<\/em>\u00a0is aligned in deeply hostile ways to the West and Australia.\u00a0<strong>These jihadists of today are motivated by the thinking embodied within overlapping ideological strands known as \u201cSalafi\u201d and \u201cWahhabi.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><em>Salafi<\/em>\u00a0in Arabic refers to \u201cpredecessors,\u201d namely, the earliest Islamic ancestors. Salafism is a movement within Sunni Islam seeking to re-institute the original Islamic dispensation. It is, therefore, literalist, puritanical and strict (even assailing such common practices as\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polytheism\">polytheism<\/a>\u00a0(<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shirk_\/528Islam\/529\"><em>shirk<\/em><\/a>) and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tawassul\"><em>tawassul<\/em><\/a>\u00a0of religious figures, the veneration of the graves of Islamic saints, and the use of amulets in aid of protection).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">But Salafi puritanism does not entail a monastic withdrawal from the world. On the contrary, it advocates\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Offensive_jihad\">offensive jihad<\/a>\u00a0against those deemed to be enemies of Islam. USA and Western materialism are its favoured targets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">As indicated earlier,\u00a0<strong>Sayyid Qutb has been one of the intellectuals propagating Salafi thinking in the mid-20th century.<\/strong>\u00a0Though his life was cut short (executed by Nasser in 1966), his thinking was disseminated by his brother Mohammed Qutb, and personnel such as\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ayman-al-zawahiri\">Ayman al-Zawahari.<\/a>\u00a0The latter was\/is a leading light in Al-Qaida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Osama bin Laden may have adopted the managerial practices of modern corporations into the organization of his outfit, but Islamic devotion also threaded its \u2018corridors\u2019.\u00a0<strong>Dwell on the preparatory practices enjoined on the commando team that carried out the 9\/11 attacks in such devastating fashion<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">These instructions were laid down in a document known as \u201cThe Last Night,\u201d and were probably drafted by Mohammed Atta, the operational commander.
