Breaking the stigma through music-By Gabriella Payne<\/span><\/h1>\n

Mental health struggles are often taboo in conversation and hidden behind closed doors, but for\u00a0one Melbourne musician, the Covid-19 lockdown inspired him to try and break down these\u00a0barriers \u2013 and what better way to spread the message than through the universal language of\u00a0music?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Raw Intense Pain\u2019 is the debut EP from Endeavour Hills artist Tanila De Silva; a record that combines catchy riffs and urban beats with powerful lyrics taking a deeper look at mental\u00a0health issues and discussing struggles openly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mainly written and produced whilst in lockdown, Tanila labelled the EP a \u201cCovid cross collaboration\u201d, a joint project between himself and London-based rapper Vithun and featuring other artists from all corners of the world, including America, Canada and The Netherlands.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tanila said it was a \u201ccool and unique experience\u201d to be able to collaborate on this record with\u00a0many other artists and that it was the perfect opportunity to spread the message of mental\u00a0health awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think music works as a platform for every person on this planet to relate to,\u201d Tanila said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the perfect way for people to be more aware that these types of issues do exist and they\u00a0can\u2019t just be swept under the rug.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of typical songs about love and heartbreak, Tanila decided to think outside the box and\u00a0take this opportunity to tackle issues including anxiety, depression and suicide.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI really wanted to open up my own musical journey with something a bit more important and\u00a0dear to my heart,\u201d Tanila said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese topics are often both taboo in life and in music. You\u2019re not meant to really talk about this,\u00a0specifically from my ethnicity or background which is South East Asian\u2026 you know, mental\u00a0health doesn\u2019t really \u2018exist\u2019 per se, which is wrong.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Tanila\u2019s unique approach to songwriting throughout this EP raises important discussions\u00a0amongst listeners, especially after a year that has left many reeling and facing challenges that\u00a0are all too real.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Beyond Blue, \u201cone quarter of Australians will experience an anxiety condition in\u00a0their lifetime\u201d and \u201cone in seven Australians will experience depression\u201d at some point \u2013 and\u00a0after the difficulties that 2020 brought, these numbers are only expected to increase.<\/span><\/p>\n

With many of us forced into isolation and the looming threat of the pandemic in the air, anxiety\u00a0and depression have been apparent in society this year more than ever and Tanila believes that\u00a0many Australians \u201cweren\u2019t aware of the dangers and implications of not looking after your mental health\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tanila openly discusses his own experiences with mental health issues, in day to day life but\u00a0now also through his music, and encourages others to do the same.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s imperative that the conversation be spread,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI personally had a friend commit suicide, coincidentally while this was in production just a few\u00a0weeks ago, which caught all of us by surprise. She was just such a bright, bubbly character and\u00a0for her to go through these things and the fact that no one even saw it coming is just terrible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Tanila hopes that by spreading the message that it\u2019s OK to talk about personal struggles openly,\u00a0that he can \u201chelp people to understand that they\u2019re not the only ones who may be going through\u00a0a rough patch in their life and there\u2019s always going to be other people out there that can potentially help\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s very important that the message is sung and spread across anyone and everyone\u00a0and that people can open up about their feelings and it\u2019s not weak to do so,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The EP is out now on all streaming services and has recently been uploaded to ABC\u2019s Triple J\u00a0Unearthed radio page, where Tanila hopes to gain some airplay in the future and spread the\u00a0message further.<\/span><\/p>\n
