Shaman Claus-The Shamanic origins of Christmas<\/span><\/h1>\n

Have you ever wondered why in modern Christmas tradition we do the things we do?\u00a0 What is the origin of the Christmas tree, with the star on top, decorations about, and all the brightly wrapped presents beneath?\u00a0 Or the idea behind Santa Claus who jets around the globe in a magic sleigh with flying reindeer \u2013 defying both time and space \u2013 to deliver the world\u2019s children a bounty of Christmas gifts?\u00a0 And since when did Santa and the birth of Jesus have anything to do with each other?\u00a0 Where do these stories come from \u2013 and better yet: what are we actually celebrating on Christmas morning?<\/span><\/p>\n

There are answers to these questions.\u00a0 And the history is not so farfetched or even that hidden.\u00a0 You just have to know where to look.\u00a0 And the first place we look is the North Pole; seriously \u2013 in ancient Siberia, near the top of the world.\u00a0 The story of Santa and his likely origins begins where he supposedly lives: the frigid North.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

THE EVENKI OF SIBERIA<\/span><\/h2>\n

In this wintry-wonderland, if you go searching for Santa, you may not find him or his Elvin factory \u2013 but you will find groups of indigenous people native to what we know as Siberia.\u00a0 Among these cultures are the northern Tungusic people, known as the Evenki.\u00a0 The Evenki were predominantly hunter-gatherers as well as\u00a0reindeer herders<\/em>.\u00a0 Their survival depended largely upon the health and vitality of their domesticated reindeer.\u00a0 The reindeer provided the Evenki and other northern tribes with everything from clothing, housing material, wares and tools from the bones and antlers, transportation (yes, they ride reindeer!), milk, as well as cultural and religious inspiration.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Evenki were also a\u00a0shamanic<\/em>\u00a0culture.\u00a0 The word \u201cshaman<\/a>\u201d actually has its roots\u00a0in the Tungus word\u00a0saman<\/em>\u00a0which means \u201cone who knows or knows the spirits.\u201d\u00a0 Many of the classic shamanic characteristics that would later be reflected in cultures all over the world were originally documented by Russian and European explorers while observing the Tungus and related people\u2019s religious life.\u00a0 This includes the three-world system, the shamanic journey or soul flight, the use of altered states of\u00a0consciousness<\/a>, animistic belief in spirit, and so forth.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

AMANITA MUSCARIA SANTA<\/span><\/h2>\n

A significant aspect of the shamanism practiced in this part of the world during that time was linked to\u00a0Amanita muscaria<\/em><\/a>, also known as the Fly Agaric mushroom.\u00a0 This\u00a0mushroom<\/a>\u00a0is more widely accepted in the modern world as the Alice in Wonderland mushroom.\u00a0 It was held very sacred by these ancient people, and was used by the shaman and others for ceremonial and spiritual purposes.\u00a0 Amanitas \u2013 as you can tell by the pictures \u2013 range from brightly red and white to golden orange and yellow.\u00a0 They\u00a0only<\/em>\u00a0grow beneath certain types of\u00a0evergreen trees<\/em>.\u00a0 They form a symbiotic relationship with the roots of the tree, the exchange of which allows them to grow.\u00a0 One of the reported ancient beliefs was that the mushroom was actually the fruit of the tree.\u00a0 Due to the lack of seed, it is also commonly held that Fly Agaric was divine \u2013 a kind of\u00a0virginally birthed<\/em>\u00a0sacred plant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although intensely psychoactive, Amanitas are also toxic.\u00a0 One way to reduce the toxicity and increase the psychoactive potency was to simply dry them.\u00a0 When out collecting the mushrooms, people would pick a bunch of them under the evergreen trees and lay them out along the branches while continuing to pick the mushrooms beneath other trees.\u00a0 The result was something that looked very reminiscent of a modern Christmas tree: evergreen trees whose\u00a0branches are dotted with bright red, roundish \u201cdecorations\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 in this case the sacred mushrooms.\u00a0 At the end of the session, the shaman or harvester would go around to each of their mushroom stashes and put them all in one large sack\u2026\u00a0a large sack<\/em>?!!\u00a0 Remind you of anything?!\u00a0 Not only this, as the story of the tradition goes, the shaman would then, carrying this large sack, visit the homes of his or her people and deliver the mushrooms to them.\u00a0 They would then continue the drying process by\u00a0hanging them in a sock, near the fire!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Amanita Muscaria Reindeer<\/span><\/h3>\n

Another way to reduce the toxicity of the sacred mushrooms is through human filtration.\u00a0 Once passed through the body, the toxic elements are apparently filtered by the liver and the resultant urine that comes out contains the still intact psychoactive elements.\u00a0 So they drank the filtered urine.\u00a0 But that\u2019s only half the story.\u00a0 Somewhere in the mythic origins of this practice is the reindeer.\u00a0 Because the reindeer also love these mushrooms.\u00a0 They dig through the snow to eat them, and they also drink their own urine afterwards.\u00a0 So perhaps, long ago, one of the first shamans witnessed the reindeer\u2019s love affair with this peculiar mushroom \u2013 as well as its propensity for eating its own freshly yellowed-snow \u2013 and saw how peculiarly it behaved as the romance heated up.\u00a0 The curiosity (indeed a hallmark characteristic of a shaman) couldn\u2019t be contained, and the shaman did what he had to do: he first ate some of the yellow snow himself\u2026 and without a doubt realized the profound wisdom and magic not only in the mushroom, but in the reindeer.\u00a0 And so this romance, too, began\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

However it may have happened in antiquity, the connection between the reindeer, the mushroom and the shamanism is apparent.\u00a0 A very common vision that one has while under the influence of Fly Agaric is precisely that:\u00a0flying<\/em>.\u00a0 Massive distortions of time and space occur, affecting scale in dramatic ways.\u00a0 Not only do you observe yourself flying, but also other things\u2026\u00a0like reindeer<\/em>.\u00a0 It is not that difficult to connect the dots here.\u00a0 Shamanic people are deeply invested in their environment.\u00a0 They learn the magical and mystical properties of the natural world, and often assign a great deal of importance and sacredness to the bearers of that magic.\u00a0 For some of these ancient Siberian people, this power was charioted by the reindeer and the sacred mushroom.\u00a0 That the reindeer should have the ability to fly is evident not only in the vision, or their clearly altered state once intoxicated, but also in the wisdom they offered to the shamans by eating the mushroom in the first place, and for guiding them to do so just the same.<\/span><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t only the reindeer who could fly, but the shamans also took flight.\u00a0 As mentioned, the shamanic journey or soul flight is a keystone in shamanic practice and especially so in ancient Siberian culture.\u00a0 In order to interact with the spirits, the shaman had to be able to leave this world and enter theirs.\u00a0 This was accomplished by projecting his or her spirit from the physical and into the immaterial.\u00a0 They either needed the power to do this on their own, or use a spirit helper to take them.\u00a0 It is very common for shamans to develop relationships with birds, naturally, as they have the power to fly.\u00a0 But here, in the North Pole, what better animal to use than the magical, flying reindeer?<\/span><\/p>\n

WORLD TREE + THE NORTH STAR<\/span><\/h2>\n

There is one other component to the shaman\u2019s flight that corresponds to our Christmas exploration, and this has to do with how they got to the other worlds.\u00a0 The shamanic cosmology often consists of three worlds: the Lower, Middle and Upper Worlds.\u00a0 Connecting the three worlds is a cosmic axis, which is also commonly known as the World Tree.\u00a0 The World Tree served as a bridge or portal that allowed a shaman and spirits to move between the three worlds.\u00a0 It was the gateway as well as the highway.\u00a0 In ancient Siberia, the same tree that also bore fruit to the amanitas was also a symbol for the world tree.\u00a0 The Evenki and other indigenous groups lived in roundish, teepee like structures called yurts.\u00a0 Sometimes they would place a\u00a0pine tree<\/a>\u00a0in their yurts for ceremonial purposes.\u00a0 This symbolized the World Tree, and they would harness its symbolic power to propel their spirit up and out of the yurt \u2013 through the smoke hole, i.e.\u00a0the chimney<\/em>.\u00a0 Once the journey was complete, they would return through the smoke-hole\/chimney<\/em>\u00a0with\u00a0the gifts<\/em>\u00a0from the spirit world.\u00a0 They also believed that the North Star was the very top of the Upper World, and because the World Tree was an axis that connected the entire cosmology,\u00a0the North Star sat upon the very top of the World Tree<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 which is where the tradition of placing a star at the top of the tree comes from.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

RITUAL OF GIFT GIVING<\/span><\/h2>\n

One of the final elements of the Christmas tradition that we know today is the whole concept of gifting.\u00a0 What are we celebrating?\u00a0 When you begin to unravel the experience of the shaman\u2019s flight and dance with Amanita, you enter a world that is deeply sacred.\u00a0 These shamanic cultures were intimately interwoven with their environments through the reindeer and the mushroom in a way that honored and celebrated the mysteries and magic that life and experience brought to the people.\u00a0 The shaman\u2019s journey and return was ultra-important to the survival of the whole community.\u00a0 What they brought back with them was often a matter of life and death.\u00a0 And time and again the shaman and the people, through these experiences that they deemed not only sacred but divine, would learn knowledge and wisdom directly from the sacred plants, their journeys, and from the spirits they interacted with.\u00a0 This was a kind of life blood for their way of being.\u00a0\u00a0This was the gift<\/em>.\u00a0 The celebration was actually a kind of celebration of life, continued survival and renewal; an honoring of the spirits, animals, plants and natural world that gave them\u00a0the gift of life and knowledge of life<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

BIRTH OF THE SUN (NOT SON)\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

This brings us to the grand finale, the big present hidden way back under the tree:\u00a0Jesus Christ<\/a>, and the timing of his arrival on Earth.\u00a0 Concurrent with Jesus\u2019 storied birth is a yearly alignment with the sun.\u00a0 On the December 21st winter solstice, the sun reaches its furthest southern point, bringing the northern hemisphere its longest night.\u00a0 For 3 days the sun remains apparently unmoving.\u00a0 On the morning of the 25th, the sun begins its northern ascent once again.\u00a0 This can be looked at as\u00a0the birth of the sun<\/em>, which has spent the winter traveling in the lower world, or the world of\u00a0darkness<\/em>.\u00a0 When the sun begins to climb once again, it is a time to celebrate the light \u2013 literally the\u00a0return of the light<\/em>, the\u00a0source of life<\/em>\u00a0on Earth, and ultimately the assurance of the coming summer, which also means the survival of the natural world, the animals, the plants, the people and their way of life. \u00a0Hence, life and the people\u00a0are saved<\/em>.\u00a0 To indigenous peoples who depended on the seasons\u2019 movement and bounty \u2013 and especially for the far northern peoples of ancient Siberia \u2013 this was a monumental time.\u00a0 The sacred Amanita with its red, golden and orange coloring as well as its capacity to offer direct experience and connection with divinity was also regarded as a symbol for the Sun and its life-giving and saving properties.\u00a0 The Sun \u2013 or the Son \u2013 is the savior, born on the 25th of December as the bringer of light, harbinger and liberator of life on Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the gift and the meaning of the holiday we know as Christ-Mass.\u00a0 When you are decorating your tree, hanging the star, and doing your thing with red and white and presents \u2013 perhaps take a moment to reflect on the esoteric meaning of the shamanic origins of Christmas, and what the spirit of this tradition was and is all about.<\/span><\/p>\n
