Sri Lankan scientist Dr Danushka Kumara Wijesundara has been on <\/span>the University of Queensland (UQ) team who were tasked to develop <\/span>a coronavirus vaccine as a component of Australia\u2019s response to target <\/span>the COVID-19 pandemic. While it was unfortunate that the wide scale <\/span>clinical trials of the vaccine were aborted, the contribution of the team <\/span>to science and rapid vaccine development is undisputed.<\/span>
\nRecently, Daehaena sat with Dr Wijesundara and discussed the <\/span>challenges and joys of doing cutting edge research.<\/span>
\nD: Where did you have your education and what experiences were you <\/span>exposed to?<\/span><\/p>\n

DW: After my primary school <\/span>education in Sri Lanka, most of <\/span>my secondary schooling and <\/span>schooling in general was accomplished at The International <\/span>School of Yangon (ISY), <\/span>Myanmar when the country was <\/span>under the rule of a military junta. <\/span>During this time, Myanmar had <\/span>limited access to the internet and <\/span>the outside world which encouraged me to interact\/make friends <\/span>with locals from low-income <\/span>dwellings who did not speak <\/span>English or Sinhalese and in doing <\/span>so I learned to speak the national (Burmese) language and to be <\/span>satisfied with limited possessions. One of my fondest memories was <\/span>playing football (soccer) in the rain, and in many cases using bare feet <\/span>to kick footballs made of cheap (affordable to the locals) plastic. I am <\/span>grateful for the life I experienced in Sri Lanka and Myanmar, being <\/span>raised by loving parents and for the education I received at ISY, all of <\/span>which were inspirational for me to be driven in the path of vaccine <\/span>development.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I came to Australia to undertake a Bachelor of Biotechnology at the <\/span>Australian National University (ANU), but it was during my honours <\/span>year I started to perform \u2018real-life\u2019 research on immunity to viruses <\/span>which is fundamental for developing rational vaccines to target <\/span>viruses. Following this experience, as a PhD student at ANU and an <\/span>early career fellow at the University of Adelaide, I was part of projects <\/span>that resulted in the development of several vaccines for HIV, hepatitis <\/span>C virus and Zika virus. This experience prepared me for the most <\/span>challenging undertaking of my career thus far which is the expedited <\/span>development of a coronavirus vaccine at UQ.<\/span><\/p>\n

D: How did you get involved with the UQ Team developing the vaccine?<\/span><\/p>\n

DW: I was made aware of an exciting research <\/span>opportunity to develop protein vaccines in the <\/span>quickest possible manner whilst attempting to <\/span>maintain accuracy against emerging viruses <\/span>with the potential to cause epidemics\/<\/span>
\npandemics using the proprietary \u2018Molecular <\/span>Clamp\u2019 vaccine technology. I got the job in <\/span>May 2019 and at that stage we were optimising <\/span>the vaccine development pipeline to make it <\/span>function in the quickest possible manner using <\/span>several viruses with no effective vaccines available to target them. I believed this job will provide me an once in a <\/span>lifetime opportunity to get involved in vaccine development that one <\/span>would be able to see from initial research to human clinical trials in a <\/span>short period of time, which would otherwise take decades.<\/span>
\nD: What are the challenges and excitements in working in this kind <\/span>of project?<\/span><\/p>\n

DW: The excitement is working at the cutting edge of vaccine technology and to develop a vaccine for human use at almost \u2018record <\/span>speed\u2019. The biggest challenge is maintaining accuracy whilst vaccine <\/span>development progresses at a very rapid speed. There are also high <\/span>expectations from the public when you are at the forefront of <\/span>vaccine development and the ambassadors of Australia\u2019s vaccine <\/span>response for COVID-19.<\/span>
\nD: Are you disappointed that the project had to be abandoned?<\/span>
\nDW: Disappointed of course. In science, many vaccines do not<\/span>
\ncomplete the different phases of human clinical testing to ultimately <\/span>be applied in the real world to benefit the general public. Although I <\/span>believed we will get this opportunity with our vaccine, our trial as <\/span>you are well aware was halted in the most unfortunate circumstances.<\/span>
\nIt is disappointing we could not progress the vaccine further because <\/span>the data in the Phase I human study showed that the vaccine can <\/span>evoke robust anti-viral and virus neutralising immune responses. Our <\/span>goal now is to make alternative versions of the Molecular Clamp to <\/span>avoid issues associated with HIV diagnostic interference.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
