It\u2019s very interesting <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">(albeit a bit cringey) to read this <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">article now, but I can see how my <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">perspective was formed from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">those initial thoughts and beliefs.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">I was right in having found a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">passion for travel (having now <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">been to 54 countries since then), <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">loving cricket and being a huge <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Nandos fan (which I still am to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">this day)!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">I am now 28 and in the midst of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">busy surgical training in Urology, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">having worked in multiple different hospitals in Queensland <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Health. With chaotic nature of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">work, exams and general life, I <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">have a little time for reflection <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">(unfortunately).<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">But I do remember the carefree <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">days when my siblings (Chanaka <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and Yehanka) and I used to go to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Sinhala school at Yungaba every <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">2nd Friday night. As a young <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Australian with Sri Lankan heri tage, it was at times difficult to completely understand where you fit in and how you identify yourself (it still can be). In day-today school, you were considered Sri Lankan, but then when you went to Sri Lanka on holidays you were considered an Australian. Meeting others going through the same conundrum was helpful. The Sinhala school days definitely reinforced the importance of being proud in our Sri Lankan heritage, something I still am today. I think the olderyou get, the more you realise that you can take the best qualities and values from being Australian and Sri Lankan, becoming an amalgamation of both. I think that\u2019s the best advice I have for young \u201cAussie Lankans\u2019 going through the same experience. In 2022 I sit my final fellowship exam in Urology, before becoming a fully qualified surgeon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55556 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Sachinka-with-his-mother.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"154\" height=\"187\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Despite this, I know the thing I will be most proud of is the work I would have done in Sri Lanka. Recently my fianc\u00e9e Anouk Dharmawardane and I raised funds from our engagement party and helped built a school in the Central Province area with the assistance of an amazing foundation called Kind Hearted Lankans (which I advise people to search and contribute to). I am hoping we can do more to help people less privileged than us in Sri Lanka who don\u2019t have the opportunities we do. I am so glad Ammi and Thathi took us to Sinhala School (even if we whinged about going on Fridays nights) as those experiences has shaped me immensely to be the proud Aussie Lankan I am today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-55557 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Sachinka-Ranasinghe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"98\" height=\"106\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Sachinka Ranasinghe<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Sachinka is a 28-year old Doctor currently specialising in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Urology.
