AUSTRALIA DAY 2021 ENCOURAGES UNITY AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT \u2013 AT HOME<\/b><\/span><\/h1>\n

Home-grown Aussie stars and a tribute to frontline workers will be highlights of a COVID-Safe Australia Day 2021, the NSW Government and The Australia Day Council of NSW announced today.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking at the official launch of the Australia Day 2021 program, Minister Ayres said the event will celebrate our resilience and unity, reflecting on the remarkable ways our communities have responded in these challenging times.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cLike everything throughout this pandemic, Australia Day 2021 will be different to previous years,\u201d Mr Ayres said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo ensure we have a COVID-Safe Australia Day, we will be staging fewer events. Celebrations will be shared with the nation on TV and online and everyone can watch from home.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe 2021 program showcases Aboriginal culture \u2013 proudly the oldest living culture in the world \u2013 celebrates our newest citizens, provides a chance to thank our frontline workers for their ongoing and tireless efforts, highlights inspirational Australian talent and asks the community to continue to support their local regions,\u201d Minister Ayres said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The evening\u2019s Australia Day Live\u00a0<\/strong>concert at the Sydney Opera House and Circular Quay will feature a tribute to the many individuals who contribute to the community in different ways. This includes\u00a0a projection on the Opera House sails as a thank you to all frontline workers for their tireless efforts during the pandemic and last summer\u2019s bushfires.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aussie music icons\u00a0Delta Goodrem<\/strong>,\u00a0Casey Donovan<\/strong>,\u00a0Dami Im,<\/strong>\u00a0Mitch Tambo<\/strong>,\u00a0Todd McKenney<\/strong>, tenor\u00a0Lorenzo Rositano<\/strong>, along with\u00a0world-renowned didgeridoo player\u00a0William Barton\u00a0<\/strong>will entertain the nation with their epic performances.\u00a0Plus, in a ground-breaking opening segment that looks at Circular Quay when it was known as Warrane, music legend\u00a0Iva Davies.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Rounding out the talent is the\u00a0Indigenous vocal group\u00a0<\/strong>KARI,<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0renowned\u00a0Koomurri<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/em>Aboriginal Dance troupe and\u00a0VOX<\/strong>\u00a0Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.\u00a0Aussie Pops Orchestra<\/strong>\u00a0will back up the artists, with Australia Day Creative Director and music maestro John Foreman as host alongside Jeremy Fernandez and Casey Donovan.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs with New Year\u2019s Eve, NSW residents are encouraged to stay local and celebrate in their communities, even if it\u2019s just throwing a snag on the barbie at the park or playing backyard cricket with the family,\u201d Mr Ayres said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Australia Day Council of NSW Chair Andrew Parker said significant planning meant that the community could still enjoy the spirit of Australia Day but in a COVID-Safe way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile this year\u2019s day-time Harbour-based activities won\u2019t be proceeding, there are key Australia Day in Sydney moments such as the WugulOra Morning Ceremony, the Salute to Australia, Citizenship Ceremony and the spectacular Australia Day Live at the Sydney Opera House going ahead and being broadcast for the entire nation to enjoy,\u201d Mr Parker said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no doubt we have had a tough time in recent years.\u00a0Our national day is a symbol of hope and optimism. It is also an opportunity to thank people across NSW who have stepped up during this difficult time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Australia Day NSW Creative Director John Foreman OAM said:\u00a0\u201cThe day is about celebrating our diversity and sharing stories.\u00a0We hope the concert, with its powerful performances and tributes, adds greater meaning to our national day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
