Raja was the most honored and dignified elephant in Asia during his lifetime. Raja (1913 \u2013 1988) was globally renowned for his dignified manners during the procession. Former President J.R. Jayewardene declared Raja as a national treasure in 1986 for his valuable services to the religion (Buddhism) and culture of Sri Lanka, two years before his death at the age of 75.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raja was respected by the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic during his lifetime as well as after his death. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taxidermy experts preserved <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the dead animal\u2019s skin and tusks to be similar to the tusker when he was alive. The enormous taxidermied corpse of the majestic animal who adorned <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Esala Perahera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for five decades is displayed in the Raja Museum, located in a small building adjoining the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">When Raja died in 1988, Government of Sri Lanka declared a Day of Mourning to honor the Tusker for his valuable service. A postage stamp was issued on December 12, 1989 in his memory. A thousand rupee note with Raja in the background was also issued by the Government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57313\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Raja-Museum-in-Kandy.jpg\" alt=\"Raja Museum - tribute to an honored elephant in Asia By Arundathie Abeysinghe\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Raja Museum is visited by local and foreign tourists who visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Apart from the taxidermied corpse of Raja, there are photographs of Raja\u2019s life including those of his service to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to legends, Raja was born in the jungles in Eravur in Batticaola District approximately in 1913. He had been captured by a group of men headed by Umaru Lebbe <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panikkar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panikkar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; a person who has mastered the skill of capturing wild elephants in the eastern parts of Sri Lanka) in November 1925. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tikiribanda Mampitiya *<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disawe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Giragama *<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walauwa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Kandy had purchased t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he young elephant (Raja) as well as another young elephant (Skanda, which also participated in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Esala Perahera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Raja for many years) with a permit issued by the British Government. The two elephants had been brought by train to *Kadugannawa Railway Station and from there to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giragama <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walauwa.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The two young elephants had been fostered by an adult female elephant at Giragama <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walauwa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the two elephants were around 24 years old, Mampitiya <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disawe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the owner of the elephants) had ceremonially gifted Raja and Skanda to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic on August 22, 1937 with a deed of transfer of ownership of the two animals. There had been a simple ceremony during the presentation of the two elephants to the Temple. *<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diyawadana Nilame<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Temple, T.B Ratwatte and other lay authorities were impressed with the physical requirements of Raja (*<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chaddanta <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caste<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with a flat back suitable for carrying the Sacred Relic Casket, pair of magnificent tusks as well as his dignified manners.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57314\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Raja-Museum-Kandy.jpg\" alt=\"Raja Museum - tribute to an honored elephant in Asia By Arundathie Abeysinghe\" width=\"600\" height=\"850\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thereafter, the two elephants had been trained as temple elephants and they had participated in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Esala Perahera <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the same year<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Raja had been internationally acclaimed for his noble behavior and had been admired by Maligawa authorities, Buddhist Priests, Buddhists, local as well as foreign tourists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b><i>Basnayake Nilame <\/i><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Lay custodian of *<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">devales.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b><i>Chaddanta <\/i><\/b><b>caste<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; In ancient times, elephants had been classified not due to hereditary castes similar to humans but according to physical features. Raja had possessed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maha Gaja Lakshana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(physical characteristics of the aristocratic caste of Sri Lankan elephants).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b><i>Devale<\/i><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; A Hindu Temple referred to as the \u201cResidence of God\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b><i>Disawe<\/i><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 The governor of a province. A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disawe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> held executive as well as judicial powers during Sinhalese Kingdoms as well as during Colonial Eras.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><b><i><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Diyawadana Nilame<\/span> <\/i><\/b><b>&#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chief lay custodian of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has the responsibility to oversee all aspects of the Temple.\u00a0 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diyawadana Nilame<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has the traditional duty of organizing the Kandy<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Esala Perahera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the annual pageant). This position was formerly an office of the royal household.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b><i>Esala Perahera<\/i><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 This annual pageant is one of the oldest as well as the grandest processions held in July or August and lasts for 10 days. The procession is a parade of musicians, dancers, singers, acrobats accompanied by a large number of caparisoned tuskers and elephants parading the streets of Kandy. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuskers are adorned with decorated gold stitched colorful costumes. Drummers and dancers are dressed in ceremonial costumes. Basnayake <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nilames<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* of four <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">devales<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in Kandy) and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diyawadana Nilame<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are dressed in their ceremonial costumes during the procession. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to foreign tourists, this the grandest processions held in Asia.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b>Kadugannawa <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; A small town in Kandy District of Central Province of Sri Lanka and was the main access to Kandy during the Kandyan Kingdom. Several battles had taken place in this location before the British Colonial Era.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b><i>Kumbal Perahera<\/i><\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Kandy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Esala Perahera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is split in to two pageants, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbal Perahera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Randoli Perahera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbal Perahera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is held during the first five days of the Pageant.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b><i>Perahera<\/i><\/b> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 A parade of musicians, dancers, acrobats and many performers accompanied by tuskers parading streets to celebrate a religious event<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b><i>Randoli Perahera<\/i><\/b><\/span><b> &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perahera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> begins five nights after *<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kumbal Perahera. Randoli<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refers to palanquins on which the queens of the ruling king traveled in the past. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maha Randoli Perahera<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the last procession and the grandest event of Kandy Esala Perahera.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><b><i>Waluwwa<\/i><\/b><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 Derived from the Tamil word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">valavu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the term refers to a feudal or colonial manor house in Sri Lanka with a compound or garden.
