His parents were James Harris <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Brohier (land surveyor) and Louisa Catherina Loftus <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">from Uthuwankanda in Kegalle district. There were <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">11 children and Mr. Lorenzo Brohier was the 2nd child <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">of the family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Mr. Brohier in Kandy.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">He was an educationalist with vast experience of teaching in different parts of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">country. From 1871 \u2013 1872 Brohier N was a teacher at Central School in Kandy. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Mr. Brohier had been worked closely with St. Joseph\u2019s Church Kandy during the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">time of Bishop Clemente Pagnani, there he was an organist and also a composer <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">(Tablet publishing company 1883.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">When he moved to Kalutara<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">By the time of 1885 \u2013 1886 Brohier N was in Kalutara at a private Roman <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Catholic School which he initiated to set up at a rented bungalow with a view to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">teaching English. This school is today well known as Holy Cross College in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Kalutara.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">His movements from the home zone to Kalutara district showed a willingness of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">traveling and the determination what he had got to teaching of English. But the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">journey wasn\u2019t end yet. From Kalutara he moved to Alutgama around 1890 where <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">it was another beautiful coastal town surrounded with the flowing end of beautiful <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Bentota River.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Mr. Brohier started another English School in Alutgama.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">This new venture welcomed him as a master of English and people made their <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">fully support to establish another English School by placing him as a head master <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">of the school without any doubt. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">New school name was Alutgama Boys English School and it started in 1890 with <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">9 students at Dehigahawatta in Alutgama. Mr. Brohier was the founder Principal <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and the master for every student. This was the first English School of the region.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Hence its popularity expanded into down south too, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">But within a year of time The committee of Alutgama residents made an official <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">agreement with Mr. Brohier on 17th January 1891 to guard and facilitate the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">school. The committee was consisted with 7 members. There were W. Silvester <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Fernando, G. Edoris Silva, B. Bastian Fernando, H. Julian Fernando, M. Alwis <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Fernando, and M. J, Bastian Perera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The above named second party was responsible for the following works, repairs <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">of the school, Collection of school fees, supply the necessaries, discussions with <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">regard to the first party payments of salaries, to inform the teachers in the time if <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">there were to be a meeting, and we the rest of the second party appoint Mr. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Hettiyakandage Julian Fernando as the manager to supervision accounts etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57389 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/School.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"314\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Education and Regional Development<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">During this time another significant industrial development were placed in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Alutgama. That was none other than laying of a new railway track from Kalutara <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">to Alutgama. According to the Ceylon Railway history Kalutara to Alutgama <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Railway line was built during the years of 1888 to 1890 and ends on 31st March <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">1890. The real economic development exactly happened when after the setting of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">new railway station in 1890 too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">People from Kalawana, Agalawatta, Matugama, Pitigala, Kosgoda, Induruwa and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Elpitiya were tended to visit Alutgama Railway Station for transportation and to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">exchange goods right here on Alutgama. As a result, new force of people, new <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">development patterns and social trends were connected to take in place ever than<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">faster. Hence New English School also got an attention among people. At that <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">time sub areas of the village reckoned by the name of Watta in Sinhala.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-57392 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Nathaniel-Henry-Lorenzo-Brohier-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"249\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">New bridge over the Bentota River built in first decade of the 20th Century. This <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">also opened a new corridor to attract more students to Alutgama Boys English <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">school. As a result, around the region school name got popular as Brohiers\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Great Students of the Brohiers\u2019 School <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-57405 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Patriot-Piyadasa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"269\" height=\"247\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Patriot Piyadasa Sirisena was one of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">students who came to learn English at Brohier <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">School around 1895. At that time his name was <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Pediris Silva and he came from Athuruwalla, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Induruwa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Among other prominent students L. Thomas <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Peiris was another one who later became <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">famous as L.T.P. ManjuSri. He was too at <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Brohier School a very short period of time <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">before he ordained to priesthood at Mangala <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Pirivena in Beruwala<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">L. Albert Peiris was one of the students who studied in 1910 and later he became<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the first Town Council Headman of the Alutgama.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Teachers at School in 1905 \/ 1912<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">N.H. Brohier (Head Master), W. D. Wickramarathna, W. Abeywickrama, A. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Kannangara, Arolis Silva, T.B. Dharmadasa, W.M. Adams<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">N.H. Brohier (Head Master ), E.D. Jansz, R. de Silva, B.H. Samaranayake, A de <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">S Abeynayaka, A.J. Mendis, Aron Kannangara, J. Jinadasa, Peter De Soysa, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Peter Jayawira.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Subjects taught:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Scripture, Reading, Grammar, History, Recitation, Idioms, Composition, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Arithmetic, Dictation and Copy, Drawing, Drill, Physical Geography. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Classes were categorized as Standards 1, 11, 111 etc\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Sudden death of Mr. Brohier 1914<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Mr. Brohier was a kind gentleman who always had a vison of teaching and runing <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">his own attire of school. He loved his own school to very much, hence before he <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">died had made arrangements to hand it over to the Methodist Mission. His death <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">was happened suddenly at the age of 67 in 1914.That unexpected incident was <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">well managed by his staff and they appointed a Headmaster of Mr. P. A. Adihetty <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">for a period of two years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">New principal arrived in 1916.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Mr. J. E Perera was appointed headmaster in 1916 and the school was named <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cMethodist Boys High School\u201d as the school came under the purview of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Methodist church classes came to be well organized from special first year to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">ESLC (English School Leaving Certificate). Perera in 1936<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Memory of Mr. Brohier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cOn a site given free by Lindamulage people a school was built with mud and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">wattle, thatched with cadjan in an incredibly short space of time. The late Mr. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">G.F. De Silva was Manager and Messrs. W. S Fernando, M.A. Fernando, B.B. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Fernando, H.I, Fernando and M.B Perera were committee members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Gifted by nature with a fine physique and a fertile brain, Mr. Brohier seemed born <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">to rule and teach. His word was law. His name and fame attracted boys from all <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">parts of the region. He admitted backward, troublesome and stubborn ugly <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">ducklings cast away from colleges. He laid the rod rather unmercifully on the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">back of truants and made them men in the world. He gave free tuition, free books, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">free clothes, and free meals to those in need. His pupils became prominent men <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">in the country<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Source: L.H. (Henry) de Silva (Student of Mr. Brohier) Extracted from the Diamond Jubilee Souvenir \u2013 1950<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">At Centenary Year of the School 1990<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt is called that the school started with only 9 pupils in a cadjan shed, just in front <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">of his room, where he was residing. Mr. Brohier was keen to teach the village <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">lads (Alutgama was then a village ) the \u2018 master\u2019s language\u2019. As days went by, it <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">became known as the Brohier\u2019s school and the students increased to 92 in 1914 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">when Mr. Brohier \u2018gave up the ghost\u2019. it is also said that Mr. Brohier never <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">charged fees as such, but left an old hat on an improvised table so that if pupils <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">wished to they could drop their \u2018mite\u2019 into it. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThis money was utilized to buy chalk and other necessities required in a school <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">of this type. But there were students who could not afford a cent (a cent was a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">valuable thing those days). The fact that Mr. brohier <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">is still remembered with reverence and affection nearly forty years after his death <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">is sufficient proof of the invaluable services he rendered\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Mr. Douglas F Goonewardena B.Sc.
