Off to School in red Double Decker.<\/span>
\nThe ride was a must in a CTB bus, One leg on the foot board.<\/span>
\nThe other dangling free.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Imminent danger<\/span>
\nWas a mere glee 20 kids plus In a space for three<\/span>
\nHung on the silver pole.<\/span>
\n\u00a0How many could it hold?<\/span>
\n\u00a0Galle Road to Maradana<\/span>
\n\u00a05c half price ticket.<\/span>
\nCost was not so dear<\/span>
\nCut school on a lazy Friday, Off to the show at 10.30, the Liberty, Queued down the street not long to go Braving the sun for ten thirty show<\/span>
\nABBA the movie, the latest release in 70mm.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u00a0The gallery destination please<\/span>
\nThe cheapest seats, a 55c each,<\/span>
\nDripping sweat from our chins to our knees<\/span>
\nGallery was for the lower class<\/span>
\n\u00a0Rs 1.10 for the second class<\/span>
\n\u00a0Never could afford the first class<\/span>
\nODC was for the upper class<\/span>
\nBeen there free of charge.<\/span>
\nOnce thrown out by security guards<\/span>
\nBalcony was certainly no go.<\/span>
\nThere was always not enough dough.<\/span>
\nFriend drove a Morris, we’d all pile on in.<\/span><\/p>\n

His friend had Ford, a little more space<\/span>
\nUncle too had a car<\/span>
\nThat kept us all fit<\/span>
\nWith a \u201cthallu\u201d start to gain more pace.<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nWaited for March, big match day<\/span>
\nAnd the Cycle Parade was before that day<\/span>
\nCollect the money for thosi kade<\/span>
\nAnd the fun was to ring the College bell before the end of school time.<\/span>
\nFirst stop was the belfry, to ring the bell then run like hell,<\/span>
\nlaughing all the way.<\/span>
\nThen the man in charge shouting and start chasing all the\u00a0way<\/span>
\nMeet the girl friend for a chat.<\/span>
\nHolding hands was the most we got.<\/span>
\nBus halt the preferred place.<\/span>
\nThese were the good old days.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zellers, Knickerbocker Glory and Bambalapitiya flats.<\/span>
\nPerhaps,some of you are too young to appreciate this…<\/span>
\nYou may however ask your parents and they would agree.<\/span>
\nWhen the worst thing you could do at school was smoke in\u00a0the bathrooms, fail a test or chew gum.<\/span>
\nAnd the banquets were in the tuck-shop,<\/span>
\nAnd we danced to a gramophone later, and all the girls wore fluffy pastel gowns,<\/span>
\nAnd the boys wore ‘longs’ for the first time,<\/span>
\nAnd we were allowed to stay out and watch a 9.30 PM show at<\/span>
\nthe Liberty and the Majestic and the Savoy<\/span>
\nAnd the biggest thrill was holding hands…!When a Sunbeam Alpine or an MG was everyone’s dream car,<\/span>
\nTo cruise, peel out, lay rubber and watch the road races and people went steady.<\/span>
\nIt was the greatest weekend to go to\u00a0the Galle Face Hotel’s ‘Coconut Grove’ with the JETLINERS,\u00a0<\/span>
\nOr The Ceylinco Ball Room with the SPITFIRES<\/span>
\nOr The Little Hut With the AMAZING GRACE<\/span>
\nOr The Akasa Kade with Sam the Man! \/ Sun & Sand<\/span>
\nAnd no one ever asked where the car keys were ’cause they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked, and you got into big trouble if you accidentally locked the doors at home, since no one ever had a key.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember, lying on your back on the grass with our friends\u00a0and saying things like “That cloud looks like a…”<\/span>
\nPlaying cricket with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game.<\/span>
\nBack then, cricket was not a psychological group learning\u00a0experience –\u00a0It was a game!<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember when stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals ’cause no one had yet tried to poison a\u00a0perfect stranger?<\/span><\/p>\n

With all our progress… Don’t you just wish… Just once…..<\/span>
\nYou Could slip back in time and savour the slower pace…<\/span>
\nAnd share it with the children of the 80’s and 90’s…<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nSo, send this on to someone who can still remember;<\/span>
\nBill Haley and the Comets,<\/span>
\nThe Hardy Boys,<\/span>
\nLaurel & Hardy,<\/span>
\nRoy Rogers and ‘Trigger\u2019,<\/span><\/p>\n

Famous Five,<\/span>
\nThe Galle Face Green,<\/span>
\nThe Lone Ranger, Kinross….\u00a0<\/span>
\nThe Otters,<\/span>
\nThe Piccadilly at Wellawatte,<\/span>
\n\u2018house-dances’,<\/span>
\nJam Sessions,<\/span>
\nZellers at Bamba,<\/span>
\n\u2018The Blue Leopard’ and of course Sirisanda…<\/span>
\nBill Forbes and The Jay Cee Shows at Mount Lavinia Hotel<\/span>
\nAnd Evenings filled with bike rides,<\/span>
\nPlaying in cowboy land, and visits to the pool…<\/span>
\nThe ‘Bamba Flats’….<\/span>
\nFish & Chips & Sundaes with that special Chocolate<\/span>
\nsauce at the ‘Fountain Cafe.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Mouth-watering “knicker bocker glory”, and the\u00a0jaggery sundae.<\/span>
\nBiriyani at Pilawoos, Mayfair..\u00a0Lion House …<\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>
\nWhen being sent to the principal’s office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home._<\/span>
\nBasically, we were in fear for our lives,<\/span>
\nBut it wasn’t because of terrorism’….<\/span>
\ndrive by shootings,<\/span>
\ndrugs, gangs, alcohol and road rage…etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat!–\u00a0*But we all survived….<\/span><\/p>\n

Because their love was greater than their threat.*<\/span><\/p>\n

\nDidn’t that make you feel good? .<\/span><\/p>\n

Just to go back and say,<\/span>
\nYeah, I remember that!’_<\/span><\/p>\n

And was it really that long ago?<\/span><\/p>\n
