They are stored in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">adipose cells, widely distributed over the body\u2014mainly under the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">skin, around deep blood vessels, and in the abdominal cavity and to<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">a lesser degree in association with muscles.\u2019<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">So, when you see a guy fat as ever, you know where most of the fats are stored to give <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">that shape: under the skin called subcutaneous fat and the protruding belly due to visceral <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">fat.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">There are three kinds of macronutrients in the diet- we eat, Carbs, Fats and Proteins. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Today, our discussion is on fats and what happens to them in our body.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Most of the dietary fats we eat are natural oils- both polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and animal saturated fats- are all packaged as triglycerides in the foods. Fish also has <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">healthy fats in oil form called omega-3 fatty acids. So, they are called oily fish. They are low <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">calorie sea foods.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">These fatty acid carbon chains are further classified as long chain, medium chained referred<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">to as MCT, and short chain fatty acids.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) have 13-22 carbons in the longest chain. They are found in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">most fats and oils, including olive oil, soybean oil, fish, nuts, avocado and meat.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Saturated long-chain fats include myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and arachidic acid. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">These are fatty acids found in dairy fat, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, peanut oil, and other <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">vegetable oils. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">To reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, the National Heart Foundation recommends<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">250-500mg per day of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">You may be taking them daily in capsule form.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/AylwTyM8tRQ<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Video talk<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Website:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">www.Doctorharold.com<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">So, when we eat dietary fat, we are really eating triglycerides.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Do vegetables we eat have fats?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Plant fats, such as nuts, seeds, avocados, olives, and oils made from plants like sunflowers,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">olives, soybean, and safflower, tend to have a higher proportion of monounsaturated fatty<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), except for coconut, palm kernel,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and palm oils.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Leafy veggies contain no fat.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">So, we are clear what dietary foods we consume day to day has fats in fatty acid form,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">including the veggies we eat.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">They are all found as triglycerides.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Triglycerides are lipid compounds composed of an alcohol glycerol attached to 3 fatty acid <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">chains of varying length and composition.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">So, in a triglyceride molecule you could have saturated or unsaturated fatty acids. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Saturated fats seem to cling onto surfaces, whether onto your plate you are about to wash <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">after enjoying a fatty meal, or internally into the blood vessels and fatty tissue.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">You know how extra soap suds are needed to remove the oily fats on your plates after <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">eating a fatty meal.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Fats are sticky. No wonder they cling and settle down on smooth surfaces like the blood <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">vessels to form plaques.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Process of digestion and absorption of triglycerides<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">These dietary triglycerides are broken down into smaller chain fatty acids in the gut, by <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">pancreatic lipases after being emulsified by the bile salts in the bile.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">In the gut inner lining cells, the- glycerol and three fatty acids gets re- packed together to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">form a ball called a chylomicron, whose role will be to transport the triglycerides to the liver.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">So, the triglycerides are broken down into glycerol a fatty acid in the gut for digestion and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">absorption.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Then, they are formed back into triglycerides in the gut mucosa. These fatty triglycerides are <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">not water soluble to be carried in our blood stream to its destinations.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">So, the core of triglyceride gets surrounded by a monolayer of a phospholipid, cholesterol, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and apoproteins, to make it water soluble to travel in your blood stream, and we now label <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">them as chylomicrons.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">What a wonderful system.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Again, there is subgrouping of these triglycerides that are coated with a water-soluble <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">capsule according to the length of the fatty chains.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The long chain triglycerides chylomicrons take a different route through the lacteal system, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and the short and medium chain triglyceride chylomicrons are directly taken into the portal <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">system and enters the liver for further metabolism and energy production.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The system can be compared to a group of tourists being divided into two groups and taken <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">in different directions for sightseeing. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The long chain fatty acids are taken through the lacteals in the gut to the thoracic duct<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">which carries these fatty acids in chylomicrons and delivers to the left subclavian vein. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Through the subclavian vein these long chain fatty acids enter the right chambers of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">heart, then via the lung vessels, after the blood being oxygenated, pumped through the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">heart to be fed into the body tissues and the excess is stored in the adipose cells.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">As mentioned, the short and medium chain fatty acids are directly taken into the liver<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">through the portal veins. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Others are animal derived foods such as lard, bacon, dairy, beef, eggs etc. have long chain <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">fatty acids.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Short chain and medium chain triglycerides do not form chylomicrons, but directly <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">transported to the liver through the portal vein without packaging into lipoprotein particles <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">in the chylomicron balls.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">So, the coconut oil you consume in your curries has medium chain fatty acids referred to as<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">MCTs, and as such directly enters the liver through the portal veins. In the liver it is totally <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">metabolized making it readily available as an energy source.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Coconut oil is &#8220;one of the worst foods you can eat&#8221; and is &#8220;pure poison&#8221;, a Harvard <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">professor has said. &#8230; In a speech at the prestigious American university, Dr Karin Michels <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">warned against consuming it.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">If this professor\u2019s findings are true, the livers of Asians and others who use coconut in their<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">daily staple diets should have severe liver damage. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Today, in the US coconut diets are promoted in slimming diets and most popular.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Let us talk about short chain fatty acids. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Short chain fatty acids are found in types of cheeses, butter, and cow\u2019s milk. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">They are also secreted by the gut bacteria through fermentation of prebiotics and resistant <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">starch and they are essential for your gut, body and even brain health.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">High-fiber foods, such as fruits, veggies, legumes, and whole grains, encourage the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">production of short-chain fatty acids through fermentation by the gut microbes.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The short and medium chain fatty acids absorbed as triglycerides enters the liver through <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the portal veins, as mentioned earlier.
