Only twice in the history of Test cricket had the team enforcing the follow on gone on to lose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Waugh, who had champions Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne in his bowling attack, was eager to drive home his side\u2019s dominance and had no reason to think his team would become the third.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1KKxV\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined _2IOn6\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">He had not counted on Indian pair VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid, whose incredible partnership of 376 was beyond the imaginings even of their teammates, and tipped the Test and the series on its head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt still gives me goosebumps when I think about that game, where we were on the second day and third day and where we were on the fifth-day evening,\u201d says Harbhajan Singh, whose first-innings hat-trick and 13 wickets for the Test helped orchestrate one of Australia\u2019s most famous defeats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cYou are winning the game from nothing. It was unimaginable to win the game from there against that Australian side that was unbeatable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The hat-trickster<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Harbhajan\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/sport\/cricket\/the-private-life-of-public-enemy-no-1-20080302-ge6smc.html\">would go on to become one of Australia\u2019s greatest antagonists<\/a>\u00a0but at the time he was a young off-spinner fighting for his career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Twenty years on, Harbhajan recalls that he embraced the \u201cwarrior\u201d spirit of his northern Indian state, the Punjab, before he transformed the Test in three balls in front of 90,000 noisy fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The Australians were 4-252 in their first innings when Harbhajan struck.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1KKxV\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined _2IOn6\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt was Ricky Ponting first lbw, then Adam Gilchrist lbw first ball. He was looking for the ball to spin but it didn\u2019t spin \u2013 it skids on from the wicket and hits his pad. I rushed him,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThen that great catch by Sadagoppan Ramesh [to dismiss Shane Warne]. He took a blinder from that flick from what Warney played. I feel that hat-trick as much as it belonged to me, it belonged to Sadagoppan Ramesh as well. That was kind of a game-changer for us \u2013 getting three wickets in three balls was like a big thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Harbhajan\u2019s hat-trick was the first by an Indian spinner in Tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The Australians still climbed to 445, with Waugh the last wicket to fall and Harbhajan claiming 7-123. India succumbed for 171 in reply.\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-24fx4\">Laxman, the elegant batsman from Hyderabad, at No.6, was the only Indian batsman to appear assured.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Nl1fN AkZ3C\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-59512 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Scorecard-455x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"455\" height=\"400\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined _2IOn6\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The follow-on and its fallout<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Australia\u2019s decision to make India bat again ranks alongside Ricky Ponting\u2019s decision to bowl first in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p527zw\">the 2005 Ashes Test at Edgbaston<\/a>\u00a0among captaincy calls the nation would rather forget. They led by 274 runs and were brimming with confidence, but opening batsman Matthew Hayden now says<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-gmpwgl\">\u00a0Warne<\/a> opposed the decision, and that it may have created \u201ca bit of a fracture\u201d in the group.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined _2IOn6\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cStephen had his point of view but Warney definitely had his point of view on it as well. He wanted to bat. That was maybe enough to just create a bit of a negative mindset &#8230; that was the whole magic of [that] era because it didn\u2019t doubt itself ever, it went for the throat,\u201d Hayden said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Coach Buchanan wishes he had taken time to discuss the strategy with Waugh, even though it probably wouldn\u2019t have changed the decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIn that probably two-minute discussion, it would have surfaced I would have thought that the only way India could get back in to the game was to make them follow on, because if we batted again, even if we batted poorly, they are chasing over 400 on a fourth-or-fifth-day wicket,\u201d Buchanan said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59513 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Shane-Warne.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"311\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 20px;\">Shane Warne is frustrated as VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid bat their way to a record partnership at Eden Gardens.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined _2IOn6\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Dravid and Laxman<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Sent back in,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p56rct\">Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly<\/a>\u00a0made one of the greatest moves of his captaincy, promoting Laxman, averaging only 27 at that stage of his career, to No.3, and dropping Dravid to No.6.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">All still seemed to be going Australia\u2019s way by stumps on day three. Laxman was unbeaten on 109 but the home team was 4-254, and Laxman had been joined by the uncertain Dravid, who was seven not out.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined _2IOn6\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Then came one of cricket\u2019s most extraordinary exhibitions of skill and willpower. Laxman and Dravid batted through day four for a partnership of 376, as the tourists wilted in the heat. Hayden remembers being pelted with stones by home fans, who he said were scraping the stadium walls to create the projectiles. In the columns of the late\u00a0<em>Age<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Sydney Morning Herald<\/em>\u00a0cricket writer Peter Roebuck, Laxman soon became \u201cVery Very Special Laxman\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Laxman made 281 and Dravid 180. Ganguly declared India\u2019s innings closed on 7-657 \u2013 giving Australia two options on the final day \u2013 to chase the 384 needed to win, or repel their natural instincts attempt to defend for a draw.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIn the second innings was something that I have never seen in Test cricket before,\u201d Harbhajan said. \u201cTwo people out there batting throughout the day and not giving any chance to the opposition \u2013 it was unbelievable. They actually got us back into the game, not I would say my hat-trick, but that partnership between VVS and Rahul. [It] gave us a chance to bowl to this Australian team in the second innings.\u2033\u2063<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59514 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/VVS-Laxman-and-Rahul-Dravid.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"237\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Epic: VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid produced one of the most famous partnerships in Test history<cite><span class=\"_30VLu\">CREDIT:<\/span>AP<\/cite><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined _2IOn6\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">On day five, Australia had lost only three wickets by tea but Waugh, having called for a tempered approach, later admitted to watching on in disbelief as his side continued to attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cHe [Waugh] had a great defence and at the same time play shots as well but not many had that kind of mindset to defend when they have to defend,\u201d Harbhajan said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThey feel the best way to bat is to score runs, which of course it is, but sometimes defending is also the best way possible. In that particular period, if they could have defended for a session, shut down everything, and just look to take singles and not play big shots, big drives, they could have survived that game. Knowing them, they were still going for their shots, and that helped us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V undefined _2IOn6\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-7fy3\">Hayden countered that claim<\/a>, declaring the Australian side of that era was \u201cterrible\u201d when required to go against its natural instincts and play defensively, arguing it just couldn\u2019t play that way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cI also think the difference is, the mindset of the group was only good in an aggressive mindset. It was a terrible team if we ever had to be in a position where we had to go a conservative route,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The Australians were dismissed for 212 in only 68.3 overs, Harbhajan \u2013 now nicknamed the \u201cTurbanator\u201d \u2013 enjoying match figures of 13-196, en route to 32 wickets for the series,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p50mlq\">and quickly earning a reputation as someone who didn\u2019t mind yapping in his native tongue at an opponent renowned for its lip in the field.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cAll I can tell you is that I have grown up in Punjab where we produce warriors. I didn\u2019t know that I was doing something. That comes naturally, that is the way I am &#8230; I would look into your face and talk or do things looking at you,\u201d Harbhajan said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-59515 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Sport-266x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<figure class=\"_3yDuP _3tisD\"><figcaption class=\"_1gvGj\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Back page of The Age, March 16 2001<cite><span class=\"_30VLu\">CREDIT:<\/span>THE AGE<\/cite><\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">This approach helped him to go on and claim a whopping 15-217 in the third and final Test in Chennai, the home side winning by two wickets, denying Waugh his final shot at a series victory in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Warne feuds with Waugh, Buchanan<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Waugh joined Jack Blackham (against England in 1894) and Kim Hughes (against England in 1981) as the only captains to have lost after enforcing the follow-on. He maintains he doesn\u2019t regret the decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIt was a decision we discussed as a team but I was extra keen to keep them pinned down and keep the momentum going,\u201d Waugh wrote in his autobiography.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Warne, who has never hidden his disdain for Waugh\u2019s captaincy, had missed the Australian summer because of a finger injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cMy view is that Steve Waugh had become obsessed with our record winning run of 16 consecutive Tests, and he forgot that patience goes a long way in winning cricket matches. Instead of applying common sense to the decision of whether to enforce the follow-on, he went with arrogance,\u201d Warne countered his own book.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Warne was not fully fit in India but was still used as a frontline weapon (taking10 wickets at 50.5 for the series) with typically Australian attacking fields unsuited to India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p50bho\">Buchanan remembers getting himself into a spot of bother with Warne when he was asked at the time about his form.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cSomebody in the press conference asked me, how was Warne going, and I said something along the lines of: \u2018He could be a bit fitter\u2019 or whatever I said, but it got interpreted that I said he was fat. Something like that. Then Warney didn\u2019t speak to me for the rest of the tour,\u201d Buchanan said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cI must say, he tried his heart out but he was well short of the sort of Shane Warne that could win you a game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59516 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Steve-Waugh.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"261\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 20px;\">Steve Waugh, Shane Warne and John Buchanan chat before an ODI in New Zealand in 2000.<cite><span class=\"_30VLu\">CREDIT:<\/span>ALLSPORT<\/cite><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Hayden says he wasn\u2019t superstitious but wonders whether fellow opener Michael Slater may have inadvertently \u201cplayed\u201d with the sporting gods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cI remember going into Eden Gardens, we had India in trouble and then Dravid and Laxman at the crease. If we get one more wicket here on that day of play, it\u2019s game over and India will capitulate,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201c\u2018Slats\u2019 had this box of Cuban cigars that we were going to smoke at the end of the day when we had won and secured the Border-Gavaskar Trophy \u2013 but I remember thinking the sporting gods are a very sinister mob. We went through that day not taking an entire wicket and then going on ourselves to get hammered in the second innings, the irony of it was just enormous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>The lessons of Eden Gardens<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">India\u2019s triumph in Kolkata transformed the way Australia approached subsequent tours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Waugh didn\u2019t get the chance to conquer his \u201cfinal frontier\u201d but three years later the Australians returned under\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-gdjsvo\">stand-in skipper Gilchrist (Ponting had a broken thumb and played only in the last Test) and claimed an historic 2-1 series win.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The lessons of Eden Gardens meant they returned to India with a whole new set of tactics. Buchanan said this included a focus on pace bowling and the use of defensive \u201cin-out\u201d fields \u2013 with fielders stationed in the deep to cut off boundaries and force the Indians to do something they didn\u2019t like, run between the wickets. In 2004, Warne was employed more as a stock bowler.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cIndia thrived on boundaries and the crowd thrived on boundaries, so the more we cut their boundaries down, the more that the crowd was quieter and wasn\u2019t sort of fuel for the Indian dressingroom,\u201d Buchanan said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">In the 20 years since that famous 2001 Border-Gavaskar series, though, Australia have won just one series in India. There have been humiliations, none more disastrous than the 2013 debacle when Shane Watson, Mitchell Johnson, Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Johnson were\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-2fyl2\">suspended for failing to complete the \u201chomework\u201d<\/a>\u00a0assigned by doomed coach Mickey Arthur. Australia went on to lose 4-0. The fight embodied by Harbhajan, Dravid and Laxman has endured, and the tourists have assembled a cast of fast bowlers capable of excelling on Australian pitches, winning their past two series
