Gamini was\u00a0 not\u00a0a\u00a0 man\u00a0 limited\u00a0to mere\u00a0 talk<\/big><\/span><\/p>\n

He\u00a0 was\u00a0 not\u00a0 only\u00a0a\u00a0 brilliant politician\u00a0 but\u00a0 also\u00a0 a\u00a0master\u00a0 of\u00a0 creating more\u00a0 talented, efficient\u00a0 people<\/big><\/span><\/p>\n

The name of Gamini Dissanayake is an indelible mark in Sri Lankan politics. This statement is issued to mark the 79th Birthday of the late politician who marked a turning point in national politics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Dissanayake\u00a0 was\u00a0 born\u00a0 on\u00a0 March\u00a0 20,\u00a0 1942\u00a0 and\u00a0 entered\u00a0 Parliament\u00a0 in\u00a0 1970. But perhaps, it was never with the intention to die as a man who would continue to live in the hearts and minds of the people. Although\u00a0 many\u00a0 people\u00a0 born\u00a0 as\u00a0 human\u00a0 beings\u00a0 often\u00a0 become\u00a0 a\u00a0 burden\u00a0 to\u00a0 one\u2019s nation only to pass away quietly, a handful of people fulfil their responsibilities and duties to die as free men and continue to live in the hearts of the people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dissanayake\u00a0 in\u00a0 1977,\u00a0 at\u00a0 the\u00a0 time\u00a0 a\u00a0 prominent\u00a0 young\u00a0 leader\u00a0 in\u00a0 Parliament, was\u00a0 \u00a0appointed\u00a0 \u00a0as\u00a0 \u00a0the\u00a0 \u00a0Minister of\u00a0 \u00a0Power\u00a0 \u00a0and\u00a0 \u00a0Energy,\u00a0 \u00a0Irrigation\u00a0 \u00a0and\u00a0 \u00a0Road Development\u00a0 \u00a0for\u00a0 \u00a0the\u00a0 \u00a0betterment\u00a0 \u00a0of\u00a0 \u00a0the\u00a0 \u00a0people.\u00a0 \u00a0He\u00a0 \u00a0was\u00a0 \u00a0given\u00a0 \u00a0this\u00a0 \u00a0great responsibility\u00a0 due\u00a0 to\u00a0 his\u00a0 genuine\u00a0 interest\u00a0 and\u00a0 commitment\u00a0 to\u00a0 serve\u00a0 the\u00a0 people\u00a0 as well\u00a0 as\u00a0 the\u00a0 genuine\u00a0 love\u00a0 shown\u00a0 to\u00a0 them\u00a0 and\u00a0 the\u00a0 strong\u00a0 drive\u00a0 to overcome challenges. He\u00a0 was\u00a0 also\u00a0 a\u00a0 talented\u00a0 orator. But\u00a0 he\u00a0 was\u00a0 not\u00a0 a\u00a0 man\u00a0 limited\u00a0 to\u00a0 mere\u00a0 talk.\u00a0 He\u00a0 also proved\u00a0 his\u00a0 talent\u00a0 to\u00a0 serve\u00a0 by\u00a0 completing\u00a0 the\u00a0 Mahaweli\u00a0 Project;\u00a0 which\u00a0 is\u00a0 arguably the\u00a0 largest\u00a0 project\u00a0 ever\u00a0 to\u00a0 be\u00a0 implemented\u00a0 in\u00a0 Sri\u00a0 Lanka,\u00a0 in\u00a0 just\u00a0 six\u00a0 years\u00a0 when\u00a0 in reality\u00a0 it\u00a0 was\u00a0 scheduled\u00a0 to\u00a0 be\u00a0 completed\u00a0 over three\u00a0 decades.\u00a0 He\u00a0 prevented\u00a0 the country\u2019s wealth and labour from being wasted by completing the project in record time. It saved years of the country\u2019s national wealth. He\u00a0 was\u00a0 not\u00a0 only\u00a0 a\u00a0 brilliant politician\u00a0 but\u00a0 also\u00a0 a\u00a0 master\u00a0 of\u00a0 creating\u00a0 more\u00a0 talented, efficient\u00a0 people.\u00a0 With\u00a0 the\u00a0 right\u00a0 guidance\u00a0 of\u00a0 those\u00a0 educated,\u00a0 intelligent\u00a0 and\u00a0 active people around him, the Mahaweli project was completed within a very short time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHis\u00a0 ability\u00a0 to\u00a0 strategically\u00a0 obtain\u00a0 grants\u00a0 for\u00a0 large\u00a0 projects\u00a0 such\u00a0 as\u00a0 the\u00a0 Mahaweli movement\u00a0 \u00a0without\u00a0 \u00a0having\u00a0 \u00a0to\u00a0 \u00a0borrow\u00a0 \u00a0from\u00a0 \u00a0other\u00a0 \u00a0countries\u00a0 \u00a0is\u00a0 \u00a0also\u00a0 \u00a0highly commendable. Kotmale,\u00a0 \u00a0Victoria,\u00a0 \u00a0Randenigala,\u00a0 \u00a0Rantambe,\u00a0 \u00a0Maduru\u00a0 \u00a0Oya,\u00a0 \u00a0Ulhitiya,\u00a0 \u00a0Rathkinda, Lunugamwehera and Samanalawewa reservoirs not only contributed to the greater part\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 country\u2019s\u00a0 electricity\u00a0 demand,\u00a0 but\u00a0 also\u00a0 contributed\u00a0 to\u00a0 the\u00a0 country\u00a0 to become self-sufficient in rice. Recognising\u00a0 that\u00a0 he\u00a0 was an\u00a0 excellent\u00a0 diplomat,\u00a0 he\u00a0 was also\u00a0 to\u00a0 be\u00a0 commended\u00a0 for working to build very strong relations with countries like India without allowing for diplomatic relations to be severed. Setting\u00a0 an\u00a0 example,\u00a0 he\u00a0 showed\u00a0 that\u00a0 the\u00a0 responsibility\u00a0 of\u00a0 a\u00a0 politician\u00a0 is\u00a0 not\u00a0 to\u00a0 live off of the people, but instead to make the people live. Thus his character is a great example to contemporary politicians.<\/span><\/p>\n

Setting\u00a0 an\u00a0 example,\u00a0 he\u00a0 showed\u00a0 that\u00a0 the\u00a0 responsibility\u00a0 of\u00a0 a\u00a0 politician\u00a0 is\u00a0 not\u00a0 to\u00a0 live off of the people, but instead to make the people live<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nHe was a man of new ideas and a pioneer in leading the country towards development by giving priority to indigenousness. He\u00a0 was\u00a0 able\u00a0 to\u00a0 ensure\u00a0 the\u00a0 conservation\u00a0 of\u00a0 Biodiversity\u00a0 and\u00a0 enhancement\u00a0 through these\u00a0 \u00a0projects,\u00a0 \u00a0which\u00a0 \u00a0also\u00a0 \u00a0created\u00a0 \u00a0watersheds\u00a0 \u00a0to\u00a0 \u00a0feed reservoirs\u00a0 \u00a0but\u00a0 \u00a0also minimised any environmental damage. It\u00a0 must\u00a0 be\u00a0 said\u00a0 that\u00a0 the\u00a0 loss of\u00a0 such\u00a0 a\u00a0 great\u00a0 politician\u00a0 is\u00a0 an\u00a0 unbearable\u00a0 loss to\u00a0 the entire people of our country as well as to the future generations to come. His name will resonate as long as these great reservoirs remain on this land. May the great politician Gamini Dissanayake attain Nirvana.\u00a0<\/span>
